1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen in deserto Sinai in ta bernaculo conventus, prima die mensis secundi, anno altero egressionis eorum ex Aegypto, dicens:	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, in the desert of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the secondmonth, in the second year after the exodus from Egypt, and said:
2 “ Tollite summam universae congregationis filiorum Israel per cognationes et domos suas et nomina singulorum, quidquid sexus est masculini	2 'Take a census of the whole community of Israelites by clans and families, taking a count of the namesof al the males, head by head.
3 a vicesimo anno et supra omnium ex Israel, qui possunt ad bella procedere, et numerabitis eos per turmas suas, tu et Aaron.	3 You and Aaron wil register al those in Israel, twenty years of age and over, fit to bear arms, companyby company;
4 Eritque vobiscum vir per tribum, princeps domus patrum suorum,	4 you wil have one man from each tribe, the head of his family, to help you.
5 quorum ista sunt nomina: de Ruben Elisur filius Sedeur;	5 'These are the names of those who must help you: For Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur.
6 de Simeon Salamiel filius Surisaddai;	6 For Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.
7 de Iuda Naasson filius Aminadab;	7 For Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab.
8 de Issachar Nathanael filius Suar;	8 For Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar.
9 de Zabulon Eliab filius Helon.	9 For Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon.
10 Filiorum autem Ioseph: de Ephraim Elisama filius Ammiud; de Manasse Gamaliel filius Phadassur.	10 Of the sons of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel son ofPedahzur.
11 De Beniamin Abidan filius Gedeonis;	11 For Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni.
12 de Dan Ahiezer filius Ammisaddai;	12 For Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.
13 de Aser Phegiel filius Ochran;	13 For Asher, Pagiel son of Ochran.
14 de Gad Eliasaph filius Deuel;	14 For Gad, Eliasaph son of Reuel.
15 de Nephthali Ahira filius Enan ”.	15 For Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.'
16 Hi viri nobilissimi congregationis principes tribuum patrum suorum et capita milium Israel.	16 These were men of repute in the community; they were the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the headsof Israel's thousands.
17 Quos tulerunt Moyses et Aaron nominatim designatos	17 Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named
18 et omnem congregationem congregaverunt primo die mensis secundi recensentes eos per cognationes et domos patrum eorum, per nomina singulorum a vicesimo anno et supra per capita,	18 and on the first day of the second month they mustered the whole community. The Israelitesestablished their pedigrees by clans and families, and one by one the names of all men of twenty years and overwere recorded.
19 sicut praeceperat Dominus Moysi. Numeratique sunt in deserto Sinai.	19 As Yahweh had ordered, Moses registered them in the desert of Sinai.
20 De Ruben primogenito Israelis generationes per familias ac domos patrum suorum, per nomina capitum singulorum omne quod sexus est masculini a vicesimo anno et supra procedentium ad bellum.	20 Once the pedigrees of the descendants of Reuben, Israel's first-born, had been established by clansand families, the names of all the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
21 Recensiti tribus Ruben quadraginta sex milia quingenti.	21 The total of these for the tribe of Reuben was forty-six thousand five hundred.
22 De filiis Simeon generationes per familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina et capita singulorum omne quod sexus est masculini a vicesimo anno et supra procedentium ad bellum.	22 Once the pedigrees of Simeon's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
23 Recensiti tribus Simeon quinquaginta novem milia trecenti.	23 The total of these for the tribe of Simeon was fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
24 De filiis Gad generationes per familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a viginti annis et supra omnes, qui ad bella procederent,	24 Once the pedigrees of Gad's descendants had been established by clans and families, the names ofal the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
25 quadraginta quinque milia sescenti quinquaginta.	25 The total of these for the tribe of Gad was forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.
26 De filiis Iudae generationes per familias ac domos cognationum suarum per nomina singulorum a vicesimo anno et supra omnes, qui poterant ad bella procedere,	26 Once the pedigrees of Judah's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
27 recensiti sunt septuaginta quattuor milia sescenti.	27 The total of these for the tribe of Judah was seventy-four thousand six hundred.
28 De filiis Issachar generationes per familias ac domos cognationum suarum per nomina singulorum a vicesimo anno et supra omnes, qui ad bella procederent,	28 Once the pedigrees of Issachar's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
29 recensiti sunt quinquaginta quattuor milia quadringenti.	29 The total of these for the tribe of Issachar was fifty-four thousand four hundred.
30 De filiis Zabulon generationes per familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a vicesimo anno et supra omnes, qui poterant ad bella procedere,	30 Once the pedigrees of Zebulun's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
31 quinquaginta septem milia quadringenti.	31 The total of these for the tribe of Zebulun was fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
32 De filiis Ioseph filiorum Ephraim generationes per familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a vicesimo anno et supra omnes, qui poterant ad bella procedere,	32 As regards the descendants of Joseph: once the pedigrees of Ephraim's descendants had beenestablished by clans and families, the names of all the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, wererecorded one by one.
33 quadraginta milia quingenti.	33 The total of these for the tribe of Ephraim was forty thousand five hundred.
34 Porro filiorum Manasse generationes per familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a viginti annis et supra omnes, qui poterant ad bella procedere,	34 Once the pedigrees of Manasseh's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
35 triginta duo milia ducenti.	35 The total of these for the tribe of Manasseh was thirty-two thousand two hundred.
36 De filiis Beniamin generationes per familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt nominibus singulorum a vicesimo anno et supra omnes, qui poterant ad bella procedere,	36 Once the pedigrees of Benjamin's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.

38 De filiis Dan generationes per familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt nominibus singulorum a vicesimo anno et supra omnes, qui poterant ad bella procedere,	38 Once the pedigrees of Dan's descendants had been established by clans and families, the names ofal the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.

40 De filiis Aser generationes per familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt per nomina singulorum a vicesimo anno et supra omnes, qui poterant ad bella procedere,	40 Once the pedigrees of Asher's descendants had been established by clans and families, the namesof al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
41 quadraginta milia et mille quingenti.	41 The total of these for the tribe of Asher was forty-one thousand five hundred.
42 De filiis Nephthali generationes per familias ac domos cognationum suarum recensiti sunt nominibus singulorum a vicesimo anno et supra omnes, qui poterant ad bella procedere,	42 Once the pedigrees of Naphtali's descendants had been established by clans and families, thenames of al the males of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were recorded one by one.
43 quinquaginta tria milia quadringenti.	43 The total of these for the tribe of Naphtali was fifty-three thousand four hundred.
44 Hi sunt quos numeraverunt Moyses et Aaron et duodecim principes Israel, singuli per domos patrum suorum.	44 Such were the men registered by Moses, Aaron and the leaders of Israel, of whom there were twelve,each representing his family.
45 Fueruntque omnis numerus filiorum Israel per domos patrum suorum a vicesimo anno et supra, qui poterant ad bella procedere,	45 Al the Israelites of twenty years and over, fit to bear arms, were counted by families.
46 sescenta tria milia virorum quingenti quinquaginta.	46 Altogether, the total came to six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.
47 Levitae autem in tribu patrum suorum non sunt numerati cum eis.	47 But the Levites and their tribes were not included in the count.
48 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen dicens:	48 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
49 “ Tribum Levi noli numerare neque pones summam eorum cum filiis Israel,	49 'Do not, however, take a census of the Levites, or register them with the other Israelites,
50 sed constitue eos super habitaculum testimonii et cuncta vasa eius et quidquid ad caeremonias pertinet. Ipsi portabunt habitaculum et omnia utensilia eius et erunt in ministerio ac per gyrum habitaculi metabuntur.	50 but enrol the Levites to take charge of the Dwel ing where the Testimony is and of al its furnishingsand belongings. They must carry the Dwel ing and al its furnishings; they must look after the Dwel ing and pitchtheir camp round it.
51 Cum proficiscendum fuerit, deponent Levitae habitaculum; cum castrametandum, erigent; quisquis externorum accesserit, occidetur.	51 Whenever the Dwelling is moved, the Levites will dismantle it; whenever the Dwel ing stops for thenight, the Levites wil erect it. Any unauthorised person coming near it will be put to death.
52 Metabuntur autem castra filii Israel, unusquisque per turmas et cuneos atque exercitum suum.	52 The Israelites wil pitch their tents, each in their own encampment and by their own standard,company by company,
53 Porro Levitae per gyrum habitaculi testimonii figent tentoria, ne fiat indignatio super congregationem filiorum Israel, et excubabunt in custodiis habitaculi testimonii ”.	53 but the Levites wil pitch their tents round the Dwel ing where the Testimony is. In this way Retributionwil be kept from fal ing on the whole community of Israelites, and the Levites wil keep charge of the Dwel ing ofthe Testimony.'
54 Fecerunt ergo filii Israel iuxta omnia, quae praeceperat Dominus Moysi.	54 The Israelites did exactly as Yahweh had ordered Moses. They did as he said.
