NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Samuel died and all Israel assembled to mourn for him. They buried him at his home in Ramah. Davidthen set off and went down to the desert of Maon.1 Mortuus est autem Samuel, et congregatus est universus Israël, et planxerunt eum, et sepelierunt eum in domo sua in Ramatha. Consurgensque David descendit in desertum Pharan.
Now, there was a man in Maon whose business was at Carmel; the man was very rich: he ownedthree thousand sheep and a thousand goats. He was then at Carmel, having his sheep shorn.2 Erat autem vir quispiam in solitudine Maon, et possessio ejus in Carmelo, et homo ille magnus nimis : erantque ei oves tria millia, et mille capræ : et accidit ut tonderetur grex ejus in Carmelo.
The man's name was Nabal and his wife's Abigail. She was a woman of intel igence and beauty, butthe man was miserly and churlish. He was a Calebite.3 Nomen autem viri illius erat Nabal. Et nomen uxoris ejus Abigail : eratque mulier illa prudentissima, et speciosa : porro vir ejus durus, et pessimus, et malitiosus : erat autem de genere Caleb.
When David heard in the desert that Nabal was at his sheepshearing,4 Cum ergo audisset David in deserto quod tonderet Nabal gregem suum,
he sent ten men off, having said to them, 'Go up to Carmel, visit Nabal and greet him from me.5 misit decem juvenes, et dixit eis : Ascendite in Carmelum, et venietis ad Nabal, et salutabitis eum ex nomine meo pacifice.
And this is what you are to say to my brother, "Peace to you, peace to your family, peace to al that isyours!6 Et dicetis : Sit fratribus meis et tibi pax, et domui tuæ pax, et omnibus, quæcumque habes, sit pax.
I hear that you now have the shearers; your shepherds were with us recently: we did not molest them, nor did they lose anything al the while they were at Carmel.7 Audivi quod tonderent pastores tui, qui erant nobiscum in deserto : numquam eis molesti fuimus, nec aliquando defuit quidquam eis de grege, omni tempore quo fuerunt nobiscum in Carmelo.
Ask your young men and they wil tel you. I hope that you will give the men a welcome, coming as wedo on a festival. Whatever you have to hand please give to your servants and to your son David." '8 Interroga pueros tuos, et indicabunt tibi. Nunc ergo inveniant pueri tui gratiam in oculis tuis : in die enim bona venimus : quodcumque invenerit manus tua, da servis tuis, et filio tuo David.
David's men went and said al this to Nabal for David, and waited.9 Cumque venissent pueri David, locuti sunt ad Nabal omnia verba hæc ex nomine David : et siluerunt.
Nabal retorted to the men in David's service, 'Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse?10 Respondens autem Nabal pueris David, ait : Quis est David ? et quis est filius Isai ? hodie increverunt servi qui fugiunt dominos suos.
There are many servants nowadays who run away from their masters. Am I to take my bread and mywine and the meat that I have slaughtered for my shearers and give it to men who come from I know not where?'11 Tollam ergo panes meos, et aquas meas, et carnes pecorum quæ occidi tonsoribus meis, et dabo viris quos nescio unde sint ?
David's men turned on their heels and went back, and on their arrival told him exactly what had beensaid.12 Regressi sunt itaque pueri David per viam suam, et reversi venerunt, et nuntiaverunt ei omnia verba quæ dixerat.
David then said to his men, 'Every man buckle on his sword!' And they buckled on their swords, andDavid buckled on his too; about four hundred fol owed David while two hundred stayed with the baggage.13 Tunc ait David pueris suis : Accingatur unusquisque gladio suo. Et accincti sunt singuli gladiis suis, accinctusque est et David ense suo : et secuti sunt David quasi quadringenti viri : porro ducenti remanserunt ad sarcinas.
Now one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife. He said, 'David sent messengers from thedesert to greet our master, but he flared up at them.14 Abigail autem uxori Nabal nuntiavit unus de pueris suis, dicens : Ecce David misit nuntios de deserto, ut benedicerent domino nostro : et aversatus est eos.
Now, these men were very good to us; they did not molest us and we lost nothing al the time we hadanything to do with them while we were out in the country.15 Homines isti boni satis fuerant nobis, et non molesti : nec quidquam aliquando periit omni tempore quo fuimus conversati cum eis in deserto :
Night and day, they were like a rampart to us, al the time we were with them, minding the sheep.16 pro muro erant nobis tam in nocte quam in die, omnibus diebus quibus pavimus apud eos greges.
So now make up your mind what you should do, for the ruin of our master and his whole family is acertainty, and he is such a brute that no one can say a word to him.'17 Quam ob rem considera, et recogita quid facias : quoniam completa est malitia adversum virum tuum, et adversum domum tuam, et ipse est filius Belial, ita ut nemo possit ei loqui.
Abigail hastily took two hundred loaves, two skins of wine, five sheep ready prepared, five measuresof roasted grain, a hundred bunches of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs and loaded them on donkeys.18 Festinavit igitur Abigail, et tulit ducentos panes, et duos utres vini, et quinque arietes coctos, et quinque sata polentæ, et centum ligaturas uvæ passæ, et ducentas massas caricarum, et posuit super asinos :
She said to her servants, 'Go on ahead, I shal fol ow you' -- but she did not tel her husband Nabal.19 dixitque pueris suis : Præcedite me : ecce ego post tergum sequar vos : viro autem suo Nabal non indicavit.
As she was riding her donkey down behind a fold in the mountain, David and his men happened tobe coming down in her direction; and she met them.20 Cum ergo ascendisset asinum, et descenderet ad radices montis, David et viri ejus descendebant in occursum ejus : quibus et illa occurrit.
Now, David had decided, 'It was a waste of time my guarding al this man's property in the desert sothat he lost nothing at all! He has repaid me bad for good.21 Et ait David : Vere frustra servavi omnia quæ hujus erant in deserto, et non periit quidquam de cunctis quæ ad eum pertinebant : et reddidit mihi malum pro bono.
May God bring unnameable il s on David and worse ones, too, if by morning I leave a single manjackalive of all who belong to him!'22 Hæc faciat Deus inimicis David, et hæc addat, si reliquero de omnibus quæ ad ipsum pertinent usque mane mingentem ad parietem.
As soon as Abigail saw David, she quickly dismounted from the donkey and, falling on her face infront of David, prostrated herself on the ground.23 Cum autem vidisset Abigail David, festinavit, et descendit de asino, et procidit coram David super faciem suam, et adoravit super terram,
She fell at his feet and said, 'Let me take the blame, my lord. Let your servant speak in your ear;listen to what your servant has to say!24 et cecidit ad pedes ejus, et dixit : In me sit, domine mi, hæc iniquitas : loquatur, obsecro, ancilla tua in auribus tuis, et audi verba famulæ tuæ.
My lord, please pay no attention to this brute Nabal for his nature is like his name; "Brute" is hisname and brutal he is. But I, your servant, did not see the men whom my lord sent.25 Ne ponat, oro, dominus meus rex cor suum super virum istum iniquum Nabal : quoniam secundum nomen suum stultus est, et stultitia est cum eo : ego autem ancilla tua non vidi pueros tuos, domine mi, quos misisti.
And now, my lord, as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, by Yahweh who kept you from the crimeof bloodshed and from taking vengeance with your own hand, may your enemies and al those ill-disposedtowards you become like Nabal.26 Nunc ergo, domine mi, vivit Dominus, et vivit anima tua, qui prohibuit te ne venires in sanguinem, et salvavit manum tuam tibi : et nunc fiant sicut Nabal inimici tui, et qui quærunt domino meo malum.
As for the present which your servant has brought my lord, I should like this to be given to the men inyour service.27 Quapropter suscipe benedictionem hanc, quam attulit ancilla tua tibi domino meo, et da pueris qui sequuntur te dominum meum.
Please forgive your servant for any offence I have given you, for Yahweh wil certainly assure you ofa lasting dynasty, since you are fighting Yahweh's battles and no fault has been found in you throughout yourlife.28 Aufer iniquitatem famulæ tuæ : faciens enim faciet Dominus tibi domino meo domum fidelem, quia prælia Domini, domine mi, tu præliaris : malitia ergo non inveniatur in te omnibus diebus vitæ tuæ.
Should anyone set out to hunt you down and try to kil you, your life wil be kept close in the wal et oflife with Yahweh your God, while your enemies' lives he wil fling out of the pouch of the sling.29 Si enim surrexerit aliquando homo persequens te, et quærens animam tuam, erit anima domini mei custodita quasi in fasciculo viventium apud Dominum Deum tuum : porro inimicorum tuorum anima rotabitur, quasi in impetu et circulo fundæ.
Once Yahweh has done for you al the good things which he has said he will do for you, and madeyou ruler of Israel,30 Cum ergo fecerit Dominus tibi domino meo omnia quæ locutus est bona de te, et constituerit te ducem super Israël,
you must have no anxiety, my lord, no remorse, over having wantonly shed blood, over having takena revenge. When Yahweh has done wel by you, then remember your servant.'31 non erit tibi hoc in singultum, et in scrupulum cordis domino meo, quod effuderis sanguinem innoxium, aut ipse te ultus fueris : et cum benefecerit Dominus domino meo, recordaberis ancillæ tuæ.
David said to Abigail, 'Blessed be Yahweh, God of Israel, who sent you to meet me today!32 Et ait David ad Abigail : Benedictus Dominus Deus Israël, qui misit hodie te in occursum meum, et benedictum eloquium tuum,
Blessed be your wisdom and blessed you yourself for today having restrained me from the crime ofbloodshed and from exacting revenge!33 et benedicta tu, quæ prohibuisti me hodie ne irem ad sanguinem, et ulciscerer me manu mea.
But as Yahweh, God of Israel, lives, who prevented me from harming you, had you not hurried out tomeet me, I swear Nabal would not have had a single manjack left alive by morning!'34 Alioquin vivit Dominus Deus Israël, qui prohibuit me ne malum facerem tibi : nisi cito venisses in occursum mihi, non remansisset Nabal usque ad lucem matutinam mingens ad parietem.
David then accepted what she had brought him and said, 'Go home in peace; yes, I have listened toyou and have pardoned you.'35 Suscepit ergo David de manu ejus omnia quæ attulerat ei, dixitque ei : Vade pacifice in domum tuam : ecce audivi vocem tuam, et honoravi faciem tuam.
Abigail returned to Nabal. He was holding a feast, a princely feast, in his house; Nabal was in highspirits, and as he was very drunk she told him nothing at al til it was daylight.36 Venit autem Abigail ad Nabal : et ecce erat ei convivium in domo ejus quasi convivium regis, et cor Nabal jucundum : erat enim ebrius nimis : et non indicavit ei verbum pusillum aut grande usque mane.
In the morning, when Nabal's wine had left him and his wife told him everything that had happened, his heart died within him and he became like a stone.37 Diluculo autem cum digessisset vinum Nabal, indicavit ei uxor sua verba hæc : et emortuum est cor ejus intrinsecus, et factus est quasi lapis.
About ten days later Yahweh struck Nabal, and he died.38 Cumque pertransissent decem dies, percussit Dominus Nabal, et mortuus est.
When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, 'Blessed be Yahweh for having defended my causeover the insult which I received from Nabal, and for having restrained his servant from doing wrong!
David then sent Abigail an offer of marriage. When the men in David's service came to Abigail atCarmel, they said, 'David has sent us to take you to him, to be his wife.'40 Et venerunt pueri David ad Abigail in Carmelum, et locuti sunt ad eam, dicentes : David misit nos ad te, ut accipiat te sibi in uxorem.
She stood up, then prostrated herself on the ground. 'Consider your servant a slave', she said, 'towash the feet of my lord's servants.'41 Quæ consurgens, adoravit prona in terram, et ait : Ecce famula tua sit in ancillam, ut lavet pedes servorum domini mei.
Quickly Abigail stood up again and mounted a donkey; fol owed by five of her servant-girls, shefol owed David's messengers and became his wife.42 Et festinavit, et surrexit Abigail, et ascendit super asinum, et quinque puellæ ierunt cum ea, pedissequæ ejus, et secuta est nuntios David : et facta est illi uxor.
David had also married Ahinoam of Jezreel and he kept them both as wives.43 Sed et Achinoam accepit David de Jezraël : et fuit utraque uxor ejus.
Saul had given his daughter Michal, David's wife, to Palti son of Laish, from Gal im.44 Saul autem dedit Michol filiam suam, uxorem David, Phalti filio Lais, qui erat de Gallim.
