1 Samuel 25

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Samuel died and all Israel assembled to mourn for him. They buried him at his home in Ramah. Davidthen set off and went down to the desert of Maon.	1 Mientras tanto, murió Samuel. Todo Israel se reunió y estuvo de duelo por él, y lo sepultaron en su casa, en Ramá, David, por su parte, bajó al desierto de Parán.
2 Now, there was a man in Maon whose business was at Carmel; the man was very rich: he ownedthree thousand sheep and a thousand goats. He was then at Carmel, having his sheep shorn.	2 Había en Maón un hombre que tenía su hacienda en Carmel. Era un hombre muy rico; tenía tres mil ovejas y mil cabras, y estaba esquilando su rebaño en Carmel.
3 The man's name was Nabal and his wife's Abigail. She was a woman of intel igence and beauty, butthe man was miserly and churlish. He was a Calebite.	3 Su nombre era Nabal, del clan de Caleb, y su mujer se llamaba Abigail. La mujer era inteligente y atractiva, pero él era rudo y de mal carácter.
4 When David heard in the desert that Nabal was at his sheepshearing,	4 David oyó en el desierto que Nabal estaba esquilando su rebaño,
5 he sent ten men off, having said to them, 'Go up to Carmel, visit Nabal and greet him from me.	5 y envió a diez jóvenes con este encargo: «Suban a Carmel, preséntense a Nabal, y salúdenlo de mi parte.
6 And this is what you are to say to my brother, "Peace to you, peace to your family, peace to al that isyours!	6 Díganle: «¡Salud! ¡Paz para ti, paz para tu casa y para todos tus bienes!
7 I hear that you now have the shearers; your shepherds were with us recently: we did not molest them,nor did they lose anything al the while they were at Carmel.	7 Acabo de oír que te están esquilando el rebaño. Ahora bien, cuando tus pastores estuvieron con nosotros, nunca los hemos molestado, ni se les perdió nada durante todo el tiempo que estuvieron en Carmel.
8 Ask your young men and they wil tel you. I hope that you will give the men a welcome, coming as wedo on a festival. Whatever you have to hand please give to your servants and to your son David." '	8 Pregunta a tus servidores y ellos te informarán. Que estos muchachos reciban de ti una buena acogida, ya que llegamos en un día de fiesta. Dales, te lo ruego, lo que tengas a mano, para tus servidores y para tu hijo David».
9 David's men went and said al this to Nabal for David, and waited.	9 Los jóvenes fueron a decir a Nabal todas estas cosas de parte de David, y se quedaron esperando.
10 Nabal retorted to the men in David's service, 'Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse?	10 Pero Nabal respondió a los servidores de David: «¿Quién es David y quién es el hijo de Jesé? Hoy en día hay muchos esclavos que se evaden de su dueño.
11 There are many servants nowadays who run away from their masters. Am I to take my bread and mywine and the meat that I have slaughtered for my shearers and give it to men who come from I know not where?'	11 ¿Voy a tomar mi pan, mi agua y los animales que maté para mis esquiladores, y se los voy a dar a gente que ni siquiera sé de dónde viene?».
12 David's men turned on their heels and went back, and on their arrival told him exactly what had beensaid.	12 Los jóvenes de David reanudaron la marcha y se fueron de vuelta. Al llegar, transmitieron a David todas estas palabras.
13 David then said to his men, 'Every man buckle on his sword!' And they buckled on their swords, andDavid buckled on his too; about four hundred fol owed David while two hundred stayed with the baggage.	13 Entonces David dijo a sus hombres: «Que cada uno se ciña su espada». Ellos se ciñeron cada uno su espada, y también David se ciñó la suya. Luego, unos cuatrocientos hombres subieron detrás de David, y los otros doscientos se quedaron con el equipaje.
14 Now one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife. He said, 'David sent messengers from thedesert to greet our master, but he flared up at them.	14 Uno de sus servidores le avisó a Abigail, la esposa de Nabal: «Mira que David envió a unos emisarios desde el desierto, para saludar a nuestro patrón, y él se abalanzó sobre ellos.
15 Now, these men were very good to us; they did not molest us and we lost nothing al the time we hadanything to do with them while we were out in the country.	15 Sin embargo, esos hombres han sido muy buenos con nosotros. Nunca nos molestaron, ni perdimos nada durante todo el tiempo que anduvimos con ellos, cuando estábamos en campo abierto.
16 Night and day, they were like a rampart to us, al the time we were with them, minding the sheep.	16 Ellos fueron para nosotros una muralla, de día y de noche, mientras estuvimos con ellos apacentando el rebaño.
17 So now make up your mind what you should do, for the ruin of our master and his whole family is acertainty, and he is such a brute that no one can say a word to him.'	17 Ahora piensa bien lo que debes hacer, porque es cosa decidida la ruina de nuestro patrón y de toda su casa. En cuanto a él, ¡no es más que un miserable, al que ni siquiera se le puede hablar!».
18 Abigail hastily took two hundred loaves, two skins of wine, five sheep ready prepared, five measuresof roasted grain, a hundred bunches of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs and loaded them on donkeys.	18 Sin pérdida de tiempo, Abigail tomó doscientos panes, dos odres de vino, cinco carneros adobados, cinco bolsas de grano tostado, cien racimos de pasas de uva y doscientas tortas de higo, y los cargó sobre unos asnos.
19 She said to her servants, 'Go on ahead, I shal fol ow you' -- but she did not tel her husband Nabal.	19 Luego dijo a sus servidores; «Adelántense ustedes, y yo iré detrás». Pero no le avisó nada a su esposo Nabal.
20 As she was riding her donkey down behind a fold in the mountain, David and his men happened tobe coming down in her direction; and she met them.	20 Mientras Abigail, montada en su asno, bajaba por un recodo de la montaña, David y sus hombres bajaban en dirección a ella.
21 Now, David had decided, 'It was a waste of time my guarding al this man's property in the desert sothat he lost nothing at all! He has repaid me bad for good.	21 Entre tanto, David pensaba: «En vano he protegido todo lo que este tenía en el desierto, sin que se le perdiera ninguno de sus bienes. El me ha devuelto mal por bien.
22 May God bring unnameable il s on David and worse ones, too, if by morning I leave a single manjackalive of all who belong to him!'	22 ¡Que Dios castigue a David una y otra vez, si dejo con vida hasta el alba a uno solo de sus hombres!».
23 As soon as Abigail saw David, she quickly dismounted from the donkey and, falling on her face infront of David, prostrated herself on the ground.	23 Apenas vio a David, Abigail bajó inmediatamente del asno, y cayó ante él con el rostro en tierra.
24 She fell at his feet and said, 'Let me take the blame, my lord. Let your servant speak in your ear;listen to what your servant has to say!	24 Y postrada a sus pies, exclamó: «¡Que la falta recaiga sobre mí, señor! ¡Pero permite que tu servidora hable en tu presencia! ¡Escucha sus palabras!
25 My lord, please pay no attention to this brute Nabal for his nature is like his name; "Brute" is hisname and brutal he is. But I, your servant, did not see the men whom my lord sent.	25 Que mi señor no le haga caso a ese miserable de Nabal, porque su nombre dice lo que él es: él se llama Nabal, que significa "insensato", y la insensatez lo acompaña. Pero yo, tu servidora, no había visto a los jóvenes que había enviado mi señor.
26 And now, my lord, as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, by Yahweh who kept you from the crimeof bloodshed and from taking vengeance with your own hand, may your enemies and al those ill-disposedtowards you become like Nabal.	26 Y ahora, ¡por la vida del Señor y por tu propia vida! es el mismo Señor el que te impide derramar sangre y hacerte justicia por tu mano. ¡Que tus enemigos y todos los que tratan de hacerte mal corran la misma suerte que Nabal!
27 As for the present which your servant has brought my lord, I should like this to be given to the men inyour service.	27 Con respecto a este obsequio que le he traído a mi señor, que lo repartan entre tus seguidores.
28 Please forgive your servant for any offence I have given you, for Yahweh wil certainly assure you ofa lasting dynasty, since you are fighting Yahweh's battles and no fault has been found in you throughout yourlife.	28 Perdona, te lo ruego, la falta de tu servidora. Porque el Señor te hará seguramente una casa perdurable, ya que tú has combatido en las guerras del Señor y en toda tu vida no se encuentra en ti nada malo.
29 Should anyone set out to hunt you down and try to kil you, your life wil be kept close in the wal et oflife with Yahweh your God, while your enemies' lives he wil fling out of the pouch of the sling.	29 Y si un hombre se alza para perseguirte y atentar contra tu vida, la vida de mi señor estará bien guardada en la bolsa de los vivientes, junto al Señor, tu Dios, mientras que él revoleará con su honda la vida de tus enemigos.
30 Once Yahweh has done for you al the good things which he has said he will do for you, and madeyou ruler of Israel,	30 Cuando el Señor te haga todo el bien que te ha prometido y te ponga como jefe en Israel,
31 you must have no anxiety, my lord, no remorse, over having wantonly shed blood, over having takena revenge. When Yahweh has done wel by you, then remember your servant.'	31 que no tengas que sentir turbación ni remordimiento de conciencia, por haber derramado sangre sin motivo y por haberte hecho justicia por ti mismo. Y cuando el Señor te colme de bienes, acuérdate de tu servidora».
32 David said to Abigail, 'Blessed be Yahweh, God of Israel, who sent you to meet me today!	32 Entonces David dijo a Abigail: «¡Bendito sea el Señor, el Dios de Israel, que hoy te envía a mi encuentro!
33 Blessed be your wisdom and blessed you yourself for today having restrained me from the crime ofbloodshed and from exacting revenge!	33 ¡Bendito sea tu buen tino, y bendiga también tú, que hoy me has impedido derramar sangre y hacerme justicia por mí mismo!
34 But as Yahweh, God of Israel, lives, who prevented me from harming you, had you not hurried out tomeet me, I swear Nabal would not have had a single manjack left alive by morning!'	34 ¡Por la vida del Señor, el Dios de Israel, que me ha impedido hacerte daño, si no te hubieras apresurado a venir a mi encuentro, juro que antes de brillar el alba no le habría quedado vivo a Nabal ni un solo hombre!».
35 David then accepted what she had brought him and said, 'Go home in peace; yes, I have listened toyou and have pardoned you.'	35 Luego David tomó lo que la mujer le había traído y le dijo: «Sube a tu casa en paz. He escuchado tu demanda y la tendré en cuenta».
36 Abigail returned to Nabal. He was holding a feast, a princely feast, in his house; Nabal was in highspirits, and as he was very drunk she told him nothing at al til it was daylight.	36 Cuando Abigail llegó a su casa, Nabal estaba celebrando un regio banquete. Nabal desbordaba de alegría; y como estaba completamente borracho, ella no le dijo ni una sola palabra antes del alba.
37 In the morning, when Nabal's wine had left him and his wife told him everything that had happened,his heart died within him and he became like a stone.	37 Pero a la mañana, cuando a Nabal ya se le había pasado la embriaguez, su mujer lo puso al tanto de lo sucedido. Entonces él tuvo un ataque al corazón y quedó paralizado.
38 About ten days later Yahweh struck Nabal, and he died.	38 Al cabo de unos diez días, el Señor hizo morir a Nabal.
39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, 'Blessed be Yahweh for having defended my causeover the insult which I received from Nabal, and for having restrained his servant from doing wrong! Yahweh hasmade Nabal's wickedness rebound on his own head!'	39 Cuando David supo que Nabal había muerto, exclamó: «¡Bendito sea el Señor, que ha defendido mi causa contra la afrenta que recibí de Nabal y ha preservado del mal a su servidor! ¡El Señor hizo que la maldad de Nabal recayera sobre él mismo!».
40 David then sent Abigail an offer of marriage. When the men in David's service came to Abigail atCarmel, they said, 'David has sent us to take you to him, to be his wife.'	40 Los servidores de David se presentaron a Abigail en Carmel y le dijeron: «David nos ha mandado a verte para tomarte por esposa».
41 She stood up, then prostrated herself on the ground. 'Consider your servant a slave', she said, 'towash the feet of my lord's servants.'	41 Ella se puso de pie, se postró con el rostro en tierra, y respondió: «Aquí está tu esclava dispuesta a lavar los pies de los servidores de mi señor».
42 Quickly Abigail stood up again and mounted a donkey; fol owed by five of her servant-girls, shefol owed David's messengers and became his wife.	42 Abigail se levantó rápidamente y montó en un asno, seguida de cinco de sus esclavas. Luego partió detrás de los enviados de David y él la tomó por esposa.
43 David had also married Ahinoam of Jezreel and he kept them both as wives.	43 David también se había casado con Ajinóam de Izreel, y tuvo a las dos por esposas.
44 Saul had given his daughter Michal, David's wife, to Palti son of Laish, from Gal im.	44 Saúl, por su parte, había dado a su hija Mical, la esposa de David, a Paltí, hijo de Lais, que era de Galím.
