1 Samuel 25

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Samuel died and all Israel assembled to mourn for him. They buried him at his home in Ramah. Davidthen set off and went down to the desert of Maon.	1 Samuel mourut. Tout Israël s'assembla et fit son deuil; on l'ensevelit chez lui à Rama. Davidpartit et descendit au désert de Maôn.
2 Now, there was a man in Maon whose business was at Carmel; the man was very rich: he ownedthree thousand sheep and a thousand goats. He was then at Carmel, having his sheep shorn.	2 Il y avait à Maôn un homme, qui avait ses affaires à Karmel; c'était un homme très riche, il avaitmille moutons et mille chèvres, et il était alors à Karmel pour la tonte de son troupeau.
3 The man's name was Nabal and his wife's Abigail. She was a woman of intel igence and beauty, butthe man was miserly and churlish. He was a Calebite.	3 L'homme se nommait Nabal et sa femme, Abigayil; mais alors que la femme était pleine de bonsens et belle à voir, l'homme était brutal et malfaisant; il était Calébite.
4 When David heard in the desert that Nabal was at his sheepshearing,	4 David, ayant appris au désert que Nabal tondait son troupeau,
5 he sent ten men off, having said to them, 'Go up to Carmel, visit Nabal and greet him from me.	5 envoya dix garçons auxquels il dit: "Montez à Karmel, rendez-vous chez Nabal et saluez-le dema part.
6 And this is what you are to say to my brother, "Peace to you, peace to your family, peace to al that isyours!	6 Vous parlerez ainsi à mon frère: Salut à toi, salut à ta maison, salut à tout ce qui t'appartient!
7 I hear that you now have the shearers; your shepherds were with us recently: we did not molest them,nor did they lose anything al the while they were at Carmel.	7 Maintenant, j'apprends que tu as les tondeurs. Or tes bergers ont été avec nous, nous ne les avonspas molestés et rien de ce qui leur appartenait n'a disparu, tout le temps qu'ils furent à Karmel.
8 Ask your young men and they wil tel you. I hope that you will give the men a welcome, coming as wedo on a festival. Whatever you have to hand please give to your servants and to your son David." '	8 Interroge tes serviteurs et ils te renseigneront. Puissent les garçons trouver bon accueil auprès detoi, car nous sommes venus un jour de fête. Donne, je te prie, ce que tu as sous la main à tes serviteurs et à tonfils David."
9 David's men went and said al this to Nabal for David, and waited.	9 Les garçons de David, étant arrivés, redirent toutes ces paroles à Nabal de la part de David etattendirent.
10 Nabal retorted to the men in David's service, 'Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse?	10 Mais Nabal, s'adressant aux serviteurs de David, leur dit: "Qui est David, qui est le fils deJessé? Il y a aujourd'hui trop de serviteurs qui se sauvent de chez leurs maîtres.
11 There are many servants nowadays who run away from their masters. Am I to take my bread and mywine and the meat that I have slaughtered for my shearers and give it to men who come from I know not where?'	11 Je vais peut-être prendre mon pain, mon vin, ma viande que j'ai abattue pour mes tondeurs et enfaire cadeau à des gens qui viennent je ne sais d'où!"
12 David's men turned on their heels and went back, and on their arrival told him exactly what had beensaid.	12 Les garçons de David rebroussèrent chemin et s'en retournèrent. A leur arrivée, ils répétèrenttoutes ces paroles à David.
13 David then said to his men, 'Every man buckle on his sword!' And they buckled on their swords, andDavid buckled on his too; about four hundred fol owed David while two hundred stayed with the baggage.	13 Alors David dit à ses hommes: "Que chacun ceigne son épée!" Ils ceignirent chacun son épée,David aussi ceignit la sienne, et 400 hommes environ partirent à la suite de David, tandis que 200 restaient prèsdes bagages.
14 Now one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife. He said, 'David sent messengers from thedesert to greet our master, but he flared up at them.	14 Or Abigayil, la femme de Nabal, avait été avertie par l'un des serviteurs, qui lui dit: "David aenvoyé, du désert, des messagers pour saluer notre maître, mais celui-ci s'est jeté sur eux.
15 Now, these men were very good to us; they did not molest us and we lost nothing al the time we hadanything to do with them while we were out in the country.	15 Pourtant ces gens ont été très bons pour nous, ils ne nous ont pas molestés et nous n'avons rienperdu, tout le temps que nous avons circulé près d'eux, quand nous étions dans la campagne.
16 Night and day, they were like a rampart to us, al the time we were with them, minding the sheep.	16 Nuit et jour, ils ont été comme un rempart autour de nous, tout le temps que nous fûmes aveceux à paître le troupeau.
17 So now make up your mind what you should do, for the ruin of our master and his whole family is acertainty, and he is such a brute that no one can say a word to him.'	17 Reconnais maintenant et vois ce que tu dois faire, car la perte de notre maître et de toute samaison est une affaire réglée, et c'est un vaurien à qui on ne peut rien dire."
18 Abigail hastily took two hundred loaves, two skins of wine, five sheep ready prepared, five measuresof roasted grain, a hundred bunches of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs and loaded them on donkeys.	18 Vite Abigayil prit 200 pains, deux outres de vin, cinq moutons apprêtés, cinq boisseaux de grainrôti, cent grappes de raisin sec, 200 gâteaux de figues, qu'elle chargea sur des ânes.
19 She said to her servants, 'Go on ahead, I shal fol ow you' -- but she did not tel her husband Nabal.	19 Elle dit à ses serviteurs: "Passez devant, et moi je vous suis", mais elle ne prévint pas Nabal, sonmari.
20 As she was riding her donkey down behind a fold in the mountain, David and his men happened tobe coming down in her direction; and she met them.	20 Tandis que, montée sur un âne, elle descendait derrière un repli de la montagne, David et seshommes descendaient vis-à-vis d'elle et elle les rencontra.
21 Now, David had decided, 'It was a waste of time my guarding al this man's property in the desert sothat he lost nothing at all! He has repaid me bad for good.	21 Or David s'était dit: "C'est donc en vain que j'ai protégé dans le désert tout ce qui était à cebonhomme et que rien de ce qui lui appartenait n'a disparu! Il me rend le mal pour le bien!
22 May God bring unnameable il s on David and worse ones, too, if by morning I leave a single manjackalive of all who belong to him!'	22 Que Dieu fasse à David ce mal et qu'il ajoute cet autre si, d'ici à demain matin, je laisse de tousles siens subsister un seul mâle."
23 As soon as Abigail saw David, she quickly dismounted from the donkey and, falling on her face infront of David, prostrated herself on the ground.	23 Dès qu'Abigayil aperçut David, elle se hâta de descendre de l'âne et, tombant sur la face devantDavid, elle se prosterna jusqu'à terre.
24 She fell at his feet and said, 'Let me take the blame, my lord. Let your servant speak in your ear;listen to what your servant has to say!	24 Se jetant à ses pieds, elle dit: "Que la faute soit sur moi, Monseigneur! Puisse ta servante parlerà tes oreilles et daigne écouter les paroles de ta servante!
25 My lord, please pay no attention to this brute Nabal for his nature is like his name; "Brute" is hisname and brutal he is. But I, your servant, did not see the men whom my lord sent.	25 Que Monseigneur ne fasse pas attention à ce vaurien, à ce Nabal, car il porte bien son nom: ils'appelle La Brute et vraiment il est abruti. Mais moi, ta servante, je n'avais pas vu les garçons que Monseigneuravait envoyés.
26 And now, my lord, as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, by Yahweh who kept you from the crimeof bloodshed and from taking vengeance with your own hand, may your enemies and al those ill-disposedtowards you become like Nabal.	26 Maintenant, Monseigneur, par la vie de Yahvé et ta propre vie, par Yahvé qui t'a empêché d'envenir au sang et de te faire justice de ta propre main, que deviennent comme Nabal tes ennemis et ceux quicherchent du mal à Monseigneur!
27 As for the present which your servant has brought my lord, I should like this to be given to the men inyour service.	27 Quant à ce présent que ta servante apporte à Monseigneur, qu'il soit remis aux garçons quimarchent sur les pas de Monseigneur.
28 Please forgive your servant for any offence I have given you, for Yahweh wil certainly assure you ofa lasting dynasty, since you are fighting Yahweh's battles and no fault has been found in you throughout yourlife.	28 Pardonne, je t'en prie, l'offense de ta servante! Aussi bien, Yahvé assurera à Monseigneur unemaison durable, car Monseigneur combat les guerres de Yahvé et, au long de ta vie, on ne trouve pas de mal entoi.
29 Should anyone set out to hunt you down and try to kil you, your life wil be kept close in the wal et oflife with Yahweh your God, while your enemies' lives he wil fling out of the pouch of the sling.	29 Et si un homme se lève pour te poursuivre et attenter à ta vie, l'âme de Monseigneur seraensachée dans le sachet de vie auprès de Yahvé ton Dieu, tandis que l'âme de tes ennemis, il la lancera au creuxde la fronde.
30 Once Yahweh has done for you al the good things which he has said he will do for you, and madeyou ruler of Israel,	30 Lors donc que Yahvé aura accompli pour Monseigneur tout le bien qu'il a dit à ton propos etlorsqu'il t'aura établi chef sur Israël,
31 you must have no anxiety, my lord, no remorse, over having wantonly shed blood, over having takena revenge. When Yahweh has done wel by you, then remember your servant.'	31 que ce ne soit pas pour toi un trouble et un remords pour Monseigneur d'avoir versé en vain lesang et de s'être fait justice de sa main. Quand Yahvé aura fait du bien à Monseigneur, souviens-toi de taservante."
32 David said to Abigail, 'Blessed be Yahweh, God of Israel, who sent you to meet me today!	32 David répondit à Abigayil: "Béni soit Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël, qui t'a envoyée aujourd'hui à marencontre.
33 Blessed be your wisdom and blessed you yourself for today having restrained me from the crime ofbloodshed and from exacting revenge!	33 Bénie soit ta sagesse et bénie sois-tu, pour m'avoir retenu aujourd'hui d'en venir au sang et deme faire justice de ma propre main!
34 But as Yahweh, God of Israel, lives, who prevented me from harming you, had you not hurried out tomeet me, I swear Nabal would not have had a single manjack left alive by morning!'	34 Mais, par la vie de Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël, qui m'a empêché de te faire du mal, si tu n'étais pasvenue aussi vite au-devant de moi, je jure que, d'ici au lever du matin, il ne serait pas resté à Nabal un seulmâle."
35 David then accepted what she had brought him and said, 'Go home in peace; yes, I have listened toyou and have pardoned you.'	35 David reçut ce qu'elle lui avait apporté et il lui dit: "Remonte en paix chez toi. Vois: je t'aiexaucée et je t'ai fait grâce."
36 Abigail returned to Nabal. He was holding a feast, a princely feast, in his house; Nabal was in highspirits, and as he was very drunk she told him nothing at al til it was daylight.	36 Quand Abigayil arriva chez Nabal, il festoyait dans sa maison. Un festin de roi: Nabal était enjoie et complètement ivre; aussi, jusqu'au lever du jour, elle ne lui révéla rien.
37 In the morning, when Nabal's wine had left him and his wife told him everything that had happened,his heart died within him and he became like a stone.	37 Le matin, quand Nabal eut cuvé son vin, sa femme lui raconta cette affaire: alors son coeurmourut dans sa poitrine et il devint comme une pierre.
38 About ten days later Yahweh struck Nabal, and he died.	38 Une dizaine de jours plus tard, Yahvé frappa Nabal et il mourut.
39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, 'Blessed be Yahweh for having defended my causeover the insult which I received from Nabal, and for having restrained his servant from doing wrong! Yahweh hasmade Nabal's wickedness rebound on his own head!'	39 Ayant appris que Nabal était mort, David dit: "Béni soit Yahvé qui m'a rendu justice pourl'injure que j'avais reçue de Nabal et qui a retenu son serviteur de commettre le mal. Yahvé a fait retomber laméchanceté de Nabal sur sa propre tête." David envoya demander Abigayil en mariage.
40 David then sent Abigail an offer of marriage. When the men in David's service came to Abigail atCarmel, they said, 'David has sent us to take you to him, to be his wife.'	40 Les serviteurs de David vinrent donc trouver Abigayil à Karmel et lui dirent: "David nous aenvoyés vers toi pour te prendre comme sa femme."
41 She stood up, then prostrated herself on the ground. 'Consider your servant a slave', she said, 'towash the feet of my lord's servants.'	41 D'un mouvement, elle se prosterna la face contre terre et dit: "Ta servante est comme uneesclave, pour laver les pieds des serviteurs de Monseigneur."
42 Quickly Abigail stood up again and mounted a donkey; fol owed by five of her servant-girls, shefol owed David's messengers and became his wife.	42 Vite, Abigayil se releva et monta sur un âne; suivie par cinq de ses servantes, elle partit derrièreles messagers de David et elle devint sa femme.
43 David had also married Ahinoam of Jezreel and he kept them both as wives.	43 David avait aussi épousé Ahinoam de Yizréel, et il les eut toutes deux pour femmes.
44 Saul had given his daughter Michal, David's wife, to Palti son of Laish, from Gal im.	44 Saül avait donné sa fille Mikal, femme de David, à Palti, fils de Layish, de Gallim.
