NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
You must see what great love the Father has lavished on us by letting us be cal ed God's children --which is what we are! The reason why the world does not acknowledge us is that it did not acknowledge him.1 Videte qualem caritatem dedit nobis Pater, ut filii Dei nomine mur, etsumus! Propter hoc mundus non cognoscit nos, quia non cognovit eum.
My dear friends, we are already God's children, but what we shall be in the future has not yet beenrevealed. We are wel aware that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he real yis.2 Carissimi, nunc filii Dei sumus, et nondum manifestatum est quid erimus; scimus quoniam, cum ipse apparuerit, similes ei erimus, quoniam videbimus eum, sicuti est.
Whoever treasures this hope of him purifies himself, to be as pure as he is.3 Et omnis, qui habet spem hanc in eo, purificat se, sicut ille purus est.
Whoever sins, acts wickedly, because al sin is wickedness.4 Omnis, qui facit peccatum, et iniquitatem facit, quia peccatum est iniquitas.
Now you are well aware that he has appeared in order to take sins away, and that in him there is no sin.5 Et scitis quoniam ille apparuit, ut peccata tolleret, et peccatum in eo non est.
No one who remains in him sins, and whoever sins has neither seen him nor recognised him.6 Omnis, qui in eo manet, non peccat; omnis, qui peccat, non vidit eum nec noviteum.
Children, do not let anyone lead you astray. Whoever acts uprightly is upright, just as he is upright.7 Filioli, nemo vos seducat. Qui facit iustitiam, iustus est, sicut ille iustusest;
Whoever lives sinfully belongs to the devil, since the devil has been a sinner from the beginning. Thiswas the purpose of the appearing of the Son of God, to undo the work of the devil.8 qui facit peccatum, ex Diabolo est, quoniam a principio Diabolus peccat.Propter hoc apparuit Filius Dei, ut dissolvat opera Diaboli.
No one who is a child of God sins because God's seed remains in him. Nor can he sin, because he is achild of God.9 Omnis, qui natusest ex Deo, peccatum non facit, quoniam semen ipsius in eo manet; et non potestpeccare, quoniam ex Deo natus est.
This is what distinguishes the children of God from the children of the devil: whoever does not liveuprightly and does not love his brother is not from God.10 In hoc manifesti sunt filii Dei et filii Diaboli: omnis, qui non facitiustitiam, non est ex Deo, et qui non diligit fratrem suum.
This is the message which you heard from the beginning, that we must love one another,11 Quoniam haec est annuntiatio, quam audistis ab initio, ut diligamusalterutrum.
not to be like Cain, who was from the Evil One and murdered his brother. And why did he murder hisbrother? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's upright.12 Non sicut Cain: ex Maligno erat et occidit fratrem suum. Etpropter quid occidit eum? Quoniam opera eius maligna erant, fratris autem eiusiusta.
Do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.13 Nolite mirari, fratres, si odit vos mundus.
We are wel aware that we have passed over from death to life because we love our brothers.Whoever does not love, remains in death.14 Nos scimus quoniam transivimusde morte in vitam, quoniam diligimus fratres; qui non diligit, manet in morte.
Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you are well aware that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.15 Omnis, qui odit fratrem suum, homicida est, et scitis quoniam omnis homicidanon habet vitam aeternam in semetipso manentem.
This is the proof of love, that he laid down his life for us, and we too ought to lay down our lives for ourbrothers.16 In hoc novimus caritatem, quoniam ille pro nobis animam suam posuit; et nosdebemus pro fratribus animas ponere.
If anyone is wel -off in worldly possessions and sees his brother in need but closes his heart to him,how can the love of God be remaining in him?17 Qui habuerit substantiam mundi etviderit fratrem suum necesse habere et clauserit viscera sua ab eo, quomodocaritas Dei manet in eo?
Children, our love must be not just words or mere talk, but something active and genuine.18 Filioli, non diligamus verbo nec lingua sed in opereet veritate.
This will be the proof that we belong to the truth, and it wil convince us in his presence,19 In hoc cognoscemus quoniam ex veritate sumus, et in conspectueius placabimus corda nostra,
even if our own feelings condemn us, that God is greater than our feelings and knows al things.20 quoniam si reprehenderit nos cor, maior estDeus corde nostro et cognoscit omnia.
My dear friends, if our own feelings do not condemn us, we can be fearless before God,21 Carissimi, si cor nostrum nonreprehenderit nos, fiduciam habemus ad Deum
and whatever we ask we shal receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what isacceptable to him.22 et, quodcumque petierimus, accipimus ab eo, quoniam mandata eius custodimus et ea, quae sunt placita corameo, facimus.
His commandment is this, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and that weshould love one another as he commanded us.23 Et hoc est mandatum eius, ut credamus nomini Filii eius Iesu Christi etdiligamus alterutrum, sicut dedit mandatum nobis.
Whoever keeps his commandments remains in God, and God in him. And this is the proof that heremains in us: the Spirit that he has given us.24 Et, qui servat mandataeius, in ipso manet, et ipse in eo; et in hoc cognoscimus quoniam manet innobis, ex Spiritu, quem nobis dedit.
