Romans 11

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 What I am saying is this: is it possible that God abandoned his people? Out of the question! I too aman Israelite, descended from Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.	1 Pergunto, então: Acaso rejeitou Deus o seu povo? De maneira alguma. Pois eu mesmo sou israelita, descendente de Abraão, da tribo de Benjamim.
2 God never abandoned his own people to whom, ages ago, he had given recognition. Do you notremember what scripture says about Elijah and how he made a complaint to God against Israel:	2 Deus não repeliu o seu povo, que ele de antemão distinguiu! Desconheceis o que narra a Escritura, no episódio de Elias, quando este se queixava de Israel a Deus:
3 Lord, they have put your prophets to the sword, torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and now they want to kil me?	3 Senhor, mataram vossos profetas, destruíram vossos altares. Fiquei apenas eu, e ainda procuram tirar-me a vida {I Rs 19,10}?
4 And what was the prophetic answer given? I have spared for myself seven thousand men that havenot bent the knee to Baal.	4 Que lhe respondeu a voz divina? Reservei para mim sete mil homens, que não dobraram o joelho diante de Baal {I Rs 19,18}.
5 In the same way, then, in our own time, there is a remnant, set aside by grace.	5 É o que continua a acontecer no tempo presente: subsiste um resto, segundo a eleição da graça.
6 And since it is by grace, it cannot now be by good actions, or grace would not be grace at al !	6 E se é pela graça, já não o é pelas obras; de outra maneira, a graça cessaria de ser graça.
7 What fol ows? Israel failed to find what it was seeking; only those who were chosen found it and therest had their minds hardened;	7 Conseqüência? Que Israel não conseguiu o que procura. Os escolhidos, estes sim, o conseguiram. Quanto aos mais, foram obcecados,
8 just as it says in scripture: God has infused them with a spirit of lethargy; until today they have noteyes to see or ears to hear.	8 como está escrito: Deus lhes deu um espírito de torpor, olhos para que não vejam e ouvidos para que não ouçam, até o dia presente {Dt 29,3}.
9 David too says: May their own table prove a trap for them, a pitfal and a snare; let that be theirretribution.	9 Davi também o diz: A mesa se lhes torne em laço, em armadilha, em ocasião de tropeço, em justo castigo!
10 May their eyes grow so dim they cannot see, and their backs be bent for ever.	10 A vista se lhes obscureça para não verem! Dobra-lhes o espinhaço sem cessar {Sl 68,23s}!
11 What I am saying is this: Was this stumbling to lead to their final downfall? Out of the question! Onthe contrary, their failure has brought salvation for the gentiles, in order to stir them to envy.	11 Pergunto ainda: Tropeçaram acaso para cair? De modo algum. Mas sua queda, tornando a salvação acessível aos pagãos, incitou-os à emulação.
12 And if their fal has proved a great gain to the world, and their loss has proved a great gain to thegentiles -- how much greater a gain wil come when all is restored to them!	12 Ora, se o seu pecado ocasionou a riqueza do mundo, e a sua decadência a riqueza dos pagãos, que não fará a sua conversão em massa?!
13 Let me say then to you gentiles that, as far as I am an apostle to the gentiles, I take pride in thiswork of service;	13 Declaro-o a vós, homens de origem pagã: como apóstolo dos pagãos, eu procuro honrar o meu ministério,
14 and I want it to be the means of rousing to envy the people who are my own blood-relations and soof saving some of them.	14 com o intuito de, eventualmente, excitar à emulação os homens da minha raça e salvar alguns deles.
15 Since their rejection meant the reconciliation of the world, do you know what their re-acceptance willmean? Nothing less than life from the dead!	15 Porque, se de sua rejeição resultou a reconciliação do mundo, qual será o efeito de sua reintegração, senão uma ressurreição dentre os mortos?
16 When the first-fruits are made holy, so is the whole batch; and if the root is holy, so are thebranches.	16 Se as primícias são santas, também a massa o é; e se a raiz é santa, os ramos também o são.
17 Now suppose that some branches were broken off, and you are wild olive, grafted among the rest toshare with the others the rich sap of the olive tree;	17 Se alguns dos ramos foram cortados, e se tu, oliveira selvagem, foste enxertada em seu lugar e agora recebes seiva da raiz da oliveira,
18 then it is not for you to consider yourself superior to the other branches; and if you start feelingproud, think: it is not you that sustain the root, but the root that sustains you.	18 não te envaideças nem menosprezes os ramos. Pois, se te gloriares, sabe que não és tu que sustentas a raiz, mas a raiz a ti.
19 You wil say, 'Branches were broken off on purpose for me to be grafted in.' True;	19 Dirás, talvez: Os ramos foram cortados para que eu fosse enxertada.
20 they through their unbelief were broken off, and you are established through your faith. So it is notpride that you should have, but fear:	20 Sem dúvida! É pela incredulidade que foram cortados, ao passo que tu é pela fé que estás firme. Não te ensoberbeças, antes teme.
21 if God did not spare the natural branches, he might not spare you either.	21 Se Deus não poupou os ramos naturais, bem poderá não poupar a ti.
22 Remember God's severity as well as his goodness: his severity to those who fel , and his goodnessto you as long as you persevere in it; if not, you too will be cut off.	22 Considera, pois, a bondade e a severidade de Deus: severidade para com aqueles que caíram, bondade para contigo, suposto que permaneças fiel a essa bondade; do contrário, também tu serás cortada.
23 And they, if they do not persevere in their unbelief, wil be grafted in; for it is within the power of Godto graft them back again.	23 E eles, se não persistirem na incredulidade, serão enxertados; pois Deus é poderoso para enxertá-los de novo.
24 After al , if you, cut off from what was by nature a wild olive, could then be grafted unnaturally on to acultivated olive, how much easier wil it be for them, the branches that natural y belong there, to be grafted on tothe olive tree which is their own.	24 Se tu, cortada da oliveira de natureza selvagem, contra a tua natureza foste enxertada em boa oliveira, quanto mais eles, que são naturais, poderão ser enxertados na sua própria oliveira!
25 I want you to be quite certain, brothers, of this mystery, to save you from congratulating yourselveson your own good sense: part of Israel had its mind hardened, but only until the gentiles have whol y come in;	25 Não quero, irmãos, que ignoreis este mistério, para que não vos gabeis de vossa sabedoria: esta cegueira de uma parte de Israel só durará até que haja entrado a totalidade dos pagãos.
26 and this is how all Israel will be saved. As scripture says: From Zion will come the Redeemer, he wilremove godlessness from Jacob.	26 Então Israel em peso será salvo, como está escrito: Virá de Sião o libertador, apartará de Jacó a impiedade.
27 And this wil be my covenant with them, when I take their sins away.	27 E esta será a minha aliança com eles, quando eu tirar os seus pecados {Is 59,20s; 27,9}.
28 As regards the gospel, they are enemies, but for your sake; but as regards those who are God'schoice, they are stil wel loved for the sake of their ancestors.	28 Se, quanto ao Evangelho, eles são inimigos de Deus, para proveito vosso, quanto à eleição eles são muito queridos por causa de seus pais.
29 There is no change of mind on God's part about the gifts he has made or of his choice.	29 Pois os dons e o chamado de Deus são irrevogáveis.
30 Just as you were in the past disobedient to God but now you have been shown mercy, through theirdisobedience;	30 Assim como vós antes fostes desobedientes a Deus, e agora obtivestes misericórdia com a desobediência deles,
31 so in the same way they are disobedient now, so that through the mercy shown to you they too wilreceive mercy.	31 assim eles são incrédulos agora, em conseqüência da misericórdia feita a vós, para que eles também mais tarde alcancem, por sua vez, a misericórdia.
32 God has imprisoned al human beings in their own disobedience only to show mercy to them al .	32 Deus encerrou a todos esses homens na desobediência para usar com todos de misericórdia.
33 How rich and deep are the wisdom and the knowledge of God! We cannot reach to the root of hisdecisions or his ways.	33 Ó abismo de riqueza, de sabedoria e de ciência em Deus! Quão impenetráveis são os seus juízos e inexploráveis os seus caminhos!
34 Who has ever known the mind of the Lord? Who has ever been his adviser?	34 Quem pode compreender o pensamento do Senhor? Quem jamais foi o seu conselheiro?
35 Who has given anything to him, so that his presents come only as a debt returned?	35 Quem lhe deu primeiro, para que lhe seja retribuído?
36 Everything there is comes from him and is caused by him and exists for him. To him be glory forever! Amen.	36 Dele, por ele e para ele são todas as coisas. A ele a glória por toda a eternidade! Amém.
