Romans 11

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 What I am saying is this: is it possible that God abandoned his people? Out of the question! I too aman Israelite, descended from Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.	1 Je demande donc: Dieu aurait-il rejeté son peuple? Certes non! Ne suis-je pas moi-mêmeIsraélite, de la race d'Abraham, de la tribu de Benjamin?
2 God never abandoned his own people to whom, ages ago, he had given recognition. Do you notremember what scripture says about Elijah and how he made a complaint to God against Israel:	2 Dieu n'a pas rejeté le peuple que d'avance il a discerné. Ou bien ignorez-vous ce que dit l'Ecritureà propos d'Elie, quand il s'entretient avec Dieu pour accuser Israël:
3 Lord, they have put your prophets to the sword, torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and now they want to kil me?	3 Seigneur, ils ont tué tes prophètes, rasé tes autels, et moi je suis resté seul et ils en veulent à mavie!
4 And what was the prophetic answer given? I have spared for myself seven thousand men that havenot bent the knee to Baal.	4 Eh bien, que lui répond l'oracle divin? Je me suis réservé 7.000 hommes qui n'ont pas fléchi legenou devant Baal.
5 In the same way, then, in our own time, there is a remnant, set aside by grace.	5 Ainsi pareillement aujourd'hui il subsiste un reste, élu par grâce.
6 And since it is by grace, it cannot now be by good actions, or grace would not be grace at al !	6 Mais si c'est par grâce, ce n'est plus en raison des oeuvres; autrement la grâce n'est plus grâce.
7 What fol ows? Israel failed to find what it was seeking; only those who were chosen found it and therest had their minds hardened;	7 Que conclure? Ce que recherche Israël, il ne l'a pas atteint; mais ceux-là l'ont atteint qui ont étéélus. Les autres, ils ont été endurcis,
8 just as it says in scripture: God has infused them with a spirit of lethargy; until today they have noteyes to see or ears to hear.	8 selon le mot de l'Ecriture: Dieu leur a donné un esprit de torpeur: ils n'ont pas d'yeux pour voir,d'oreilles pour entendre jusqu'à ce jour.
9 David too says: May their own table prove a trap for them, a pitfal and a snare; let that be theirretribution.	9 David dit aussi: Que leur table soit un piège, un lacet, une cause de chute, et leur serve de salaire!
10 May their eyes grow so dim they cannot see, and their backs be bent for ever.	10 Que leurs yeux s'enténèbrent pour ne point voir, et fais-leur sans arrêt courber le dos!
11 What I am saying is this: Was this stumbling to lead to their final downfall? Out of the question! Onthe contrary, their failure has brought salvation for the gentiles, in order to stir them to envy.	11 Je demande donc: serait-ce pour une vraie chute qu'ils ont bronché? Certes non! mais leur fauxpas a procuré le salut aux païens, afin que leur propre jalousie en fût excitée.
12 And if their fal has proved a great gain to the world, and their loss has proved a great gain to thegentiles -- how much greater a gain wil come when all is restored to them!	12 Et si leur faux pas a fait la richesse du monde et leur amoindrissement la richesse des païens,que ne fera pas leur totalité!
13 Let me say then to you gentiles that, as far as I am an apostle to the gentiles, I take pride in thiswork of service;	13 Or je vous le dis à vous, les païens, je suis bien l'apôtre des païens et j'honore mon ministère,
14 and I want it to be the means of rousing to envy the people who are my own blood-relations and soof saving some of them.	14 mais c'est avec l'espoir d'exciter la jalousie de ceux de mon sang et d'en sauver quelques-uns.
15 Since their rejection meant the reconciliation of the world, do you know what their re-acceptance willmean? Nothing less than life from the dead!	15 Car si leur mise à l'écart fut une réconciliation pour le monde, que sera leur admission, sinon unerésurrection d'entre les morts?
16 When the first-fruits are made holy, so is the whole batch; and if the root is holy, so are thebranches.	16 Or si les prémices sont saintes, toute la pâte aussi; et si la racine est sainte, les branches aussi.
17 Now suppose that some branches were broken off, and you are wild olive, grafted among the rest toshare with the others the rich sap of the olive tree;	17 Mais si quelques-unes des branches ont été coupées tandis que toi, sauvageon d'olivier tu as étégreffé parmi elles pour bénéficier avec elles de la sève de l'olivier,
18 then it is not for you to consider yourself superior to the other branches; and if you start feelingproud, think: it is not you that sustain the root, but the root that sustains you.	18 ne va pas te glorifier aux dépens des branches. Ou si tu veux te glorifier, ce n'est pas toi quiportes la racine, c'est la racine qui te porte.
19 You wil say, 'Branches were broken off on purpose for me to be grafted in.' True;	19 Tu diras: On a coupé des branches, pour que, moi, je fusse greffé.
20 they through their unbelief were broken off, and you are established through your faith. So it is notpride that you should have, but fear:	20 Fort bien. Elles ont été coupées pour leur incrédulité, et c'est la foi qui te fait tenir. Net'enorgueillis pas; crains plutôt.
21 if God did not spare the natural branches, he might not spare you either.	21 Car si Dieu n'a pas épargné les branches naturelles, prends garde qu'il ne t'épargne pasdavantage.
22 Remember God's severity as well as his goodness: his severity to those who fel , and his goodnessto you as long as you persevere in it; if not, you too will be cut off.	22 Considère donc la bonté et la sévérité de Dieu: sévérité envers ceux qui sont tombés, et enverstoi bonté, pourvu que tu demeures en cette bonté; autrement tu seras retranché toi aussi.
23 And they, if they do not persevere in their unbelief, wil be grafted in; for it is within the power of Godto graft them back again.	23 Et eux, s'ils ne demeurent pas dans l'incrédulité, ils seront greffés: Dieu est bien assez puissantpour les greffer à nouveau.
24 After al , if you, cut off from what was by nature a wild olive, could then be grafted unnaturally on to acultivated olive, how much easier wil it be for them, the branches that natural y belong there, to be grafted on tothe olive tree which is their own.	24 En effet, si toi tu as été retranché de l'olivier sauvage auquel tu appartenais par nature, et greffé,contre nature, sur un olivier franc, combien plus eux, les branches naturelles, seront-ils greffés sur leur propreolivier!
25 I want you to be quite certain, brothers, of this mystery, to save you from congratulating yourselveson your own good sense: part of Israel had its mind hardened, but only until the gentiles have whol y come in;	25 Car je ne veux pas, frères, vous laisser ignorer ce mystère, de peur que vous ne vous complaisiezen votre sagesse: une partie d'Israël s'est endurcie jusqu'à ce que soit entrée la totalité des païens,
26 and this is how all Israel will be saved. As scripture says: From Zion will come the Redeemer, he wilremove godlessness from Jacob.	26 et ainsi tout Israël sera sauvé, comme il est écrit: De Sion viendra le Libérateur, il ôtera lesimpiétés du milieu de Jacob.
27 And this wil be my covenant with them, when I take their sins away.	27 Et voici quelle sera mon alliance avec eux lorsque j'enlèverai leurs péchés.
28 As regards the gospel, they are enemies, but for your sake; but as regards those who are God'schoice, they are stil wel loved for the sake of their ancestors.	28 Ennemis, il est vrai, selon l'Evangile, à cause de vous, ils sont, selon l'Election, chéris à cause deleurs pères.
29 There is no change of mind on God's part about the gifts he has made or of his choice.	29 Car les dons et l'appel de Dieu sont sans repentance.
30 Just as you were in the past disobedient to God but now you have been shown mercy, through theirdisobedience;	30 En effet, de même que jadis vous avez désobéi à Dieu et qu'au temps présent vous avez obtenumiséricorde grâce à leur désobéissance,
31 so in the same way they are disobedient now, so that through the mercy shown to you they too wilreceive mercy.	31 eux de même au temps présent ont désobéi grâce à la miséricorde exercée envers vous, afinqu'eux aussi ils obtiennent au temps présent miséricorde.
32 God has imprisoned al human beings in their own disobedience only to show mercy to them al .	32 Car Dieu a enfermé tous les hommes dans la désobéissance pour faire à tous miséricorde.
33 How rich and deep are the wisdom and the knowledge of God! We cannot reach to the root of hisdecisions or his ways.	33 O abîme de la richesse, de la sagesse et de la science de Dieu! Que ses décrets sont insondableset ses voies incompréhensibles!
34 Who has ever known the mind of the Lord? Who has ever been his adviser?	34 Qui en effet a jamais connu la pensée du Seigneur? Qui en fut jamais le conseiller?
35 Who has given anything to him, so that his presents come only as a debt returned?	35 Ou bien qui l'a prévenu de ses dons pour devoir être payé de retour?
36 Everything there is comes from him and is caused by him and exists for him. To him be glory forever! Amen.	36 Car tout est de lui et par lui et pour lui. A lui soit la gloire éternellement! Amen.
