1 What I am saying is this: is it possible that God abandoned his people? Out of the question! I too aman Israelite, descended from Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.	1 Alors je demande: Comment, Dieu a rejeté son peuple? Sûrement pas. Moi-même je suis un Israélite, de la race d’Abraham, de la tribu de Benjamin.
2 God never abandoned his own people to whom, ages ago, he had given recognition. Do you notremember what scripture says about Elijah and how he made a complaint to God against Israel:	2 Dieu n’a pas rejeté son peuple, ceux qu’il a connus d’avance. Vous devez savoir ce que l’Écriture fait dire à Élie, comment il accusait devant Dieu le peuple d’Israël:
3 Lord, they have put your prophets to the sword, torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and now they want to kil me?	3 Seigneur, ils ont massacré tes prophètes, ils ont détruit tes autels; je reste seul et ils en veulent encore à ma vie.
4 And what was the prophetic answer given? I have spared for myself seven thousand men that havenot bent the knee to Baal.	4 Mais quelle a été la réponse prophétique? Je me suis gardé 7 000 hommes qui n’ont pas plié le genou devant Baal.
5 In the same way, then, in our own time, there is a remnant, set aside by grace.	5 Et c’est la même chose aujourd’hui: il y a un reste élu par grâce.
6 And since it is by grace, it cannot now be by good actions, or grace would not be grace at al !	6 Je dis bien: par grâce, et non pas à cause de leurs œuvres; sinon ce ne serait plus une grâce.
7 What fol ows? Israel failed to find what it was seeking; only those who were chosen found it and therest had their minds hardened;	7 Alors, que dire? Ce qu’Israël cherchait, il ne l’a pas trouvé, mais il y a eu des élus pour le trouver pendant que les autres s’aveuglaient.
8 just as it says in scripture: God has infused them with a spirit of lethargy; until today they have noteyes to see or ears to hear.	8 Il est écrit: Dieu a rendu leur esprit insensible, avec des yeux qui ne voient pas et des oreilles qui n’entendent pas jusqu’à ce jour.
9 David too says: May their own table prove a trap for them, a pitfal and a snare; let that be theirretribution.	9 Et David dit: Que leur table soit pour eux un filet, un piège, une pierre sur laquelle ils butent et qui les fait tomber; que ce soit là leur châtiment.
10 May their eyes grow so dim they cannot see, and their backs be bent for ever.	10 Que leurs yeux soient en ténèbres et ne puissent voir, qu’ils marchent en tout temps le dos plié.
11 What I am saying is this: Was this stumbling to lead to their final downfall? Out of the question! Onthe contrary, their failure has brought salvation for the gentiles, in order to stir them to envy.	11 Je demande alors: Sont-ils tombés pour ne pas se relever? Certainement pas. Grâce à leur chute, les païens ont reçu le salut, et cela va être un défi pour eux.
12 And if their fal has proved a great gain to the world, and their loss has proved a great gain to thegentiles -- how much greater a gain wil come when all is restored to them!	12 Si par leur chute le monde est devenu riche, et ce qu’ils ont perdu est devenu la richesse des nations, ne faut-il pas espérer mieux encore quand ils seront rétablis?
13 Let me say then to you gentiles that, as far as I am an apostle to the gentiles, I take pride in thiswork of service;	13 Écoutez-moi, vous qui n’êtes pas juifs, je suis apôtre des non-Juifs, et je remplis cette charge de mon mieux.
14 and I want it to be the means of rousing to envy the people who are my own blood-relations and soof saving some of them.	14 Mais je le fais comme un défi adressé aux miens, car je voudrais en sauver un certain nombre.
15 Since their rejection meant the reconciliation of the world, do you know what their re-acceptance willmean? Nothing less than life from the dead!	15 Voyez: ils sont écartés et le monde est réconcilié; que sera-ce alors quand ils retrouveront leur place? Ce sera le retour des morts à la vie.
16 When the first-fruits are made holy, so is the whole batch; and if the root is holy, so are thebranches.	16 Quand on donne à Dieu les prémices, toute la masse en est sanctifiée; si la racine est sainte, les branches le sont aussi.
17 Now suppose that some branches were broken off, and you are wild olive, grafted among the rest toshare with the others the rich sap of the olive tree;	17 Mais voilà, des branches sont tombées, et toi, on t’a pris sur un arbre sauvage pour te greffer sur leur arbre: tu profites ainsi de la racine et de la sève de l’olivier.
18 then it is not for you to consider yourself superior to the other branches; and if you start feelingproud, think: it is not you that sustain the root, but the root that sustains you.	18 Ne te moque donc pas de ceux qui sont tombés. Comment voudrais-tu te moquer? Ce n’est pas toi qui portes la racine, mais c’est la racine qui te porte.
19 You wil say, 'Branches were broken off on purpose for me to be grafted in.' True;	19 Tu dis: Ils sont tombés pour que je prenne leur place. Oui, ils n’ont pas cru et ils sont tombés, et toi, tu es là grâce à la foi.
20 they through their unbelief were broken off, and you are established through your faith. So it is notpride that you should have, but fear:	20 Mais prends garde, laisse là ton orgueil et surveille tes pas.
21 if God did not spare the natural branches, he might not spare you either.	21 Si Dieu n’a pas épargné les branches naturelles, il le fera encore moins pour toi.
22 Remember God's severity as well as his goodness: his severity to those who fel , and his goodnessto you as long as you persevere in it; if not, you too will be cut off.	22 Tu peux le voir, Dieu est généreux et sévère à la fois. Sévère, puisqu’ils sont tombés; bon avec toi si tu persévères dans le bien. Autrement tu seras retranché toi aussi.
23 And they, if they do not persevere in their unbelief, wil be grafted in; for it is within the power of Godto graft them back again.	23 Mais eux, s’ils ne persévèrent pas dans le refus de croire, ils seront greffés, car Dieu est capable de les greffer de nouveau.
24 After al , if you, cut off from what was by nature a wild olive, could then be grafted unnaturally on to acultivated olive, how much easier wil it be for them, the branches that natural y belong there, to be grafted on tothe olive tree which is their own.	24 Tu as bien été greffé toi-même, contre nature, sur le bon olivier, alors que par nature tu étais d’un olivier sauvage; ce sera bien plus facile et plus naturel de les greffer sur leur propre olivier.
25 I want you to be quite certain, brothers, of this mystery, to save you from congratulating yourselveson your own good sense: part of Israel had its mind hardened, but only until the gentiles have whol y come in;	25 Frères, je veux que vous compreniez ce mystère au lieu d’être trop sûrs de vous-mêmes. Une partie d’Israël restera dans son aveuglement jusqu’à ce que l’ensemble des nations soit entré,
26 and this is how all Israel will be saved. As scripture says: From Zion will come the Redeemer, he wilremove godlessness from Jacob.	26 et à ce moment c’est Israël tout entier qui sera sauvé, comme le dit l’Écriture: De Sion viendra le rédempteur pour éloigner de Jacob ses fautes contre Dieu.
27 And this wil be my covenant with them, when I take their sins away.	27 Et voici l’alliance que je ferai avec eux après leur avoir enlevé leurs péchés.
28 As regards the gospel, they are enemies, but for your sake; but as regards those who are God'schoice, they are stil wel loved for the sake of their ancestors.	28 Du point de vue de l’Évangile, ils sont des adversaires, et c’est pour votre bien. Mais si l’on s’en tient à l’élection, ils sont aimés à cause de leurs pères.
29 There is no change of mind on God's part about the gifts he has made or of his choice.	29 Car Dieu ne revient pas sur ses dons ni sur son appel.
30 Just as you were in the past disobedient to God but now you have been shown mercy, through theirdisobedience;	30 Voyez: alors que vous étiez loin de l’obéissance à Dieu, c’est leur désobéissance qui vous a obtenu la grâce.
31 so in the same way they are disobedient now, so that through the mercy shown to you they too wilreceive mercy.	31 Eux aussi auront droit à sa miséricorde après cette désobéissance qui vous a valu la miséricorde.
32 God has imprisoned al human beings in their own disobedience only to show mercy to them al .	32 Ainsi Dieu nous fait tous passer par la désobéissance, afin de montrer à tous sa miséricorde.
33 How rich and deep are the wisdom and the knowledge of God! We cannot reach to the root of hisdecisions or his ways.	33 Y a-t-il quelque chose d’aussi profond que la richesse, et la sagesse et la connaissance de Dieu? Comment expliquer ses décisions, comment reconnaître tous ses chemins?
34 Who has ever known the mind of the Lord? Who has ever been his adviser?	34 Qui est entré dans les pensées du Seigneur? Qui pourrait être son conseiller?
35 Who has given anything to him, so that his presents come only as a debt returned?	35 Qui lui a donné le premier pour que Dieu ait à lui rendre?
36 Everything there is comes from him and is caused by him and exists for him. To him be glory forever! Amen.	36 Tout vient de lui, tout arrive par lui, tout va vers lui. Gloire à lui pour les siècles. Amen!
