1 In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the beginning	1 - Io già feci, o Teofilo, la prima narrazione di tutto quel che Gesù prese a fare e a insegnare,
2 until the day he gave his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and wastaken up to heaven.	2 sino al giorno che fu assunto, dopo aver dato per mezzo dello Spirito Santo i suoi ordini agli apostoli che aveva eletti.
3 He had shown himself alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he hadcontinued to appear to them and tel them about the kingdom of God.	3 A' quali Egli, dopo la sua passione, si diè a veder vivo con prove manifeste della sua risurrezione, apparendo ad essi durante quaranta giorni, e ragionando del regno di Dio.
4 While at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Fatherhad promised. 'It is', he had said, 'what you have heard me speak about:	4 Quando si trovava con essi, comandò loro di non allontanarsi da Gerusalemme, ma d'aspettarvi la promessa dal Padre; - della quale (disse) m'avete udito parlare.
5 John baptised with water but, not many days from now, you are going to be baptised with the HolySpirit.'	5 Sì, Giovanni battezzò con acqua, ma voi sarete battezzati con lo Spirito Santo, di qui a non molti giorni. -
6 Now having met together, they asked him, 'Lord, has the time come for you to restore the kingdom toIsrael?'	6 Quelli poi si dettero a domandargli: «Signore, è questo il tempo che ristabilirai il regno d'Israele?».
7 He replied, 'It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by his own authority,	7 Egli rispose: «Non sta a voi di sapere i tempi e i momenti; il Padre li ha serbati nella sua potestà:
8 but you wil receive the power of the Holy Spirit which wil come on you, and then you will be mywitnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to earth's remotest end.'	8 ma voi riceverete forza di Spirito Santo, quando verrà su di voi; e mi sarete testimoni in Gerusalemme, e in tutta la Giudea e la Samaria, e fino alle estremità della terra».
9 As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight.	9 E, detto questo, mentr'essi guardavano, si levò in alto, e una nuvola lo nascose agli occhi loro.
10 They were stil staring into the sky as he went, when suddenly two men in white were standing besidethem,	10 E come essi avevano ancora gli occhi fissi in cielo mentr'egli se ne andava, ecco due uomini in bianche vesti presentarsi,
11 and they said, 'Why are you Galileans standing here looking into the sky? 12 So from the Mount of Olives, as it is cal ed, they went back to Jerusalem, a short distance away, nomore than a Sabbath walk;	12 Allora essi tornarono a Gerusalemme dal monte che si chiama dell'Uliveto, il quale è vicino a Gerusalemme e ne dista il cammino di un sabato.
13 and when they reached the city they went to the upper room where they were staying; there were Peterand John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus andSimon the Zealot, and Jude son of James.	13 Entrati che furono in città, salirono nella stanza superiore della casa ove solevano ritrovarsi. C'erano Pietro e Giovanni, Giacomo e Andrea, Filippo e Tommaso, Bartolomeo e Matteo, Giacomo d'Alfeo, Simone Zelota, e Giuda di Giacomo.
14 With one heart al these joined constantly in prayer, together with some women, including Mary themother of Jesus, and with his brothers.	14 Tutti questi perseveravano concordi nella preghiera, assieme con le donne, e con Maria, madre di Gesù, e coi fratelli di lui.
15 One day Peter stood up to speak to the brothers -- there were about a hundred and twenty people inthe congregation,	15 E in que' giorni, levatosi Pietro in mezzo a' fratelli (il numero delle persone adunate era di circa centoventi), disse:
16 'Brothers,' he said, 'the passage of scripture had to be fulfil ed in which the Holy Spirit, speaking through David, foretel s the fate of Judas, who acted as guide to the men who arrested Jesus-	16 «Fratelli; bisognava s'adempisse quel che lo Spirito Santo aveva predetto nella Scrittura per bocca di David, intorno a Giuda, il guidatore di quelli che presero Gesù.
17 after being one of our number and sharing our ministry.	17 Egli era de' nostri, egli aveva ricevuto la sorte dello stesso nostro ministero.
18 As you know, he bought a plot of land with the money he was paid for his crime. He fell headlong andburst open, and al his entrails poured out.	18 Egli acquistò sì un campo, ma col salario della sua iniquità; e, impiccatosi, crepò per mezzo e si sparsero tutte le sue viscere.
19 Everybody in Jerusalem heard about it and the plot came to be cal ed "Bloody Acre", in their languageHakeldama.	19 La cosa è risaputa da tutti in Gerusalemme, per modo che quel campo fu chiamato nella loro lingua "Aceldama", cioè "Campo di sangue".
20 Now in the Book of Psalms it says: Reduce his encampment to ruin and leave his tent unoccupied. Andagain: Let someone else take over his office.	20 Ora sta scritto nel libro de' Salmi: "Divenga la sua abitazione deserta, nè ci sia chi abiti in essa; e l'ufficio di lui lo prenda un altro".
21 'Out of the men who have been with us the whole time that the Lord Jesus was living with us,	21 Bisogna dunque che di questi uomini che sono stati con noi per tutto il tempo che il Signore Gesù è andato e venuto tra noi,
22 from the time when John was baptising until the day when he was taken up from us, one must beappointed to serve with us as a witness to his resurrection.'	22 a cominciare dal battesimo di Giovanni fino al giorno in cui è stato assunto d'in mezzo a noi, uno di questi diventi con noi testimone della risurrezione di lui».
23 Having nominated two candidates, Joseph known as Barsabbas, whose surname was Justus, andMatthias,	23 Ne furon proposti due: Giuseppe, detto Barsaba, soprannominato il Giusto, e Mattia.
24 they prayed, 'Lord, you can read everyone's heart; show us therefore which of these two you havechosen	24 E nel pregare dissero: «Tu, Signore, che conosci il cuore di tutti, mostra quale di questi due tu hai scelto
25 to take over this ministry and apostolate, which Judas abandoned to go to his proper place.'	25 per ricevere in questo ministero e apostolato il posto da cui traviò Giuda per andare al luogo suo».
26 They then drew lots for them, and as the lot fel to Matthias, he was listed as one of the twelveapostles.	26 E li tirarono a sorte; e la sorte cadde su Mattia, che fu aggregato agli undici apostoli.
