NEW JERUSALEMKING JAMES BIBLE
In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the beginning1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
until the day he gave his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and wastaken up to heaven.2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
He had shown himself alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he hadcontinued to appear to them and tel them about the kingdom of God.3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
While at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Fatherhad promised. 'It is', he had said, 'what you have heard me speak about:4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
John baptised with water but, not many days from now, you are going to be baptised with the HolySpirit.'5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
Now having met together, they asked him, 'Lord, has the time come for you to restore the kingdom toIsrael?'6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
He replied, 'It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by his own authority,7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
but you wil receive the power of the Holy Spirit which wil come on you, and then you will be mywitnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to earth's remotest end.'8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight.9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
They were stil staring into the sky as he went, when suddenly two men in white were standing besidethem,10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
and they said, 'Why are you Galileans standing here looking into the sky? This Jesus who has beentaken up from you into heaven wil come back in the same way as you have seen him go to heaven.'11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
So from the Mount of Olives, as it is cal ed, they went back to Jerusalem, a short distance away, nomore than a Sabbath walk;12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
and when they reached the city they went to the upper room where they were staying; there were Peterand John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus andSimon the Zealot, and Jude son of James.13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
With one heart al these joined constantly in prayer, together with some women, including Mary themother of Jesus, and with his brothers.14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
One day Peter stood up to speak to the brothers -- there were about a hundred and twenty people inthe congregation,15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
'Brothers,' he said, 'the passage of scripture had to be fulfil ed in which the Holy Spirit, speaking through David, foretel s the fate of Judas, who acted as guide to the men who arrested Jesus-16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
after being one of our number and sharing our ministry.17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
As you know, he bought a plot of land with the money he was paid for his crime. He fell headlong andburst open, and al his entrails poured out.18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
Everybody in Jerusalem heard about it and the plot came to be cal ed "Bloody Acre", in their languageHakeldama.19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
Now in the Book of Psalms it says: Reduce his encampment to ruin and leave his tent unoccupied. Andagain: Let someone else take over his office.20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
'Out of the men who have been with us the whole time that the Lord Jesus was living with us,21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
from the time when John was baptising until the day when he was taken up from us, one must beappointed to serve with us as a witness to his resurrection.'22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
Having nominated two candidates, Joseph known as Barsabbas, whose surname was Justus, andMatthias,23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
they prayed, 'Lord, you can read everyone's heart; show us therefore which of these two you havechosen24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
to take over this ministry and apostolate, which Judas abandoned to go to his proper place.'25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
They then drew lots for them, and as the lot fel to Matthias, he was listed as one of the twelveapostles.26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
