1 In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the beginning	1 Io ho parlato in primo luogo, o Teofilo, di tutto quello, che principiò Gesù a fare, e ad insegnare.
2 until the day he gave his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and wastaken up to heaven.	2 Sino a quel giorno, in cui dati per mezzo dello Spirito santo i suoi ordini agli Apostoli, che aveva eletti, fu assunto:
3 He had shown himself alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he hadcontinued to appear to them and tel them about the kingdom of God.	3 A' quali ancora si diede a veder vivo dopo la sua passione con molte riprove, apparendo ad essi per quaranta giorni, e parlando del regno di Dio.
4 While at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Fatherhad promised. 'It is', he had said, 'what you have heard me speak about:	4 Ed essendo insieme a mensa, comandò loro di non allontanarsi da Gerusalemme, ma di aspettare la promessa del Padre, la quale (disse) avete udita dalla mia bocca:
5 John baptised with water but, not many days from now, you are going to be baptised with the HolySpirit.'	5 Imperocché Gioanni battezzò bensì di acqua, ma voi sarete battezzati nello Spirito santo di qui a non molti giorni.
6 Now having met together, they asked him, 'Lord, has the time come for you to restore the kingdom toIsrael?'	6 Ma quegli unitisi insieme gli domandavano dicendo: Signore, renderai tu adesso il regno ad Israele?
7 He replied, 'It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by his own authority,	7 Egli però disse loro: Non si appartiene a voi di sapere i tempi, e i momenti, i quali il Padre ha ritenuti in poter suo:
8 but you wil receive the power of the Holy Spirit which wil come on you, and then you will be mywitnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to earth's remotest end.'	8 Ma riceverete la virtù dello Spirito santo, il quale verrà sopra di voi, e sarete a me testimoni e in Gerusalemme, e in tutta la Giudea, e nella Samaria, e sino all'estremità del mondo.
9 As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight.	9 E detto questo, a vista di essi si alzò in alto: e una nuvola lo tolse agli occhi loro.
10 They were stil staring into the sky as he went, when suddenly two men in white were standing besidethem,	10 E in quello che stavano fissamente mirando lui, che saliva al cielo, ecco che due personaggi in bianche vesti si appressarono ad essi.
11 and they said, 'Why are you Galileans standing here looking into the sky? This Jesus who has beentaken up from you into heaven wil come back in the same way as you have seen him go to heaven.'	11 I quali anche dissero: Uomini di Galilea, perché state mirando verso del cielo? Quel Gesù, il quale tolto a voi è stato assunto al cielo, cosi verrà, come lo avete veduto andare al cielo.
12 So from the Mount of Olives, as it is cal ed, they went back to Jerusalem, a short distance away, nomore than a Sabbath walk;	12 Allora ritornarono a Gerusalemme dal monte, che dicesi dell'Uliveto, il quale è vicino a Gerusalemme, quant'è il viaggio d'un giorno di sabato.
13 and when they reached the city they went to the upper room where they were staying; there were Peterand John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus andSimon the Zealot, and Jude son of James.	13 E giunti ch'ei furono, salirono al cenacolo (in cui alloggiavano) Pietro, e Giacomo, e Giovanni, e Andrea, Filippo, e Tommaso, Bartolommeo, e Matteo, Giacomo figliuolo di Alfeo, e Simone Zelote, e Giuda fratello di Giacomo.
14 With one heart al these joined constantly in prayer, together with some women, including Mary themother of Jesus, and with his brothers.	14 Tutti questi perseveravano di concordia nell'orazione insieme colle donne, e con Maria Madre di Gesù, e co' fratelli di lui.
15 One day Peter stood up to speak to the brothers -- there were about a hundred and twenty people inthe congregation,	15 E in que' giorni alzatosi Pietro in mezzo ai fratelli (era il numero delle persone adunate di circa cento venti) disse:
16 'Brothers,' he said, 'the passage of scripture had to be fulfil ed in which the Holy Spirit, speaking through David, foretel s the fate of Judas, who acted as guide to the men who arrested Jesus-	16 Fratelli, fa di mestieri, che si riduca ad effetto quel, che fu scritto, e predetto dallo Spirito santo per bocca di Davidde intorno a Giuda, il quale fu il caporione di coloro, che catturarono Gesù:
17 after being one of our number and sharing our ministry.	17 Egli, che fu annoverato tra noi, ed ebbe in sorte questo stesso ministero.
18 As you know, he bought a plot of land with the money he was paid for his crime. He fell headlong andburst open, and al his entrails poured out.	18 Quegli adunque acquistò un campo per ricompensa dell'iniquità, e appiccatosi crepò pel mezzo: e si sparsero tutte le sue viscere.
19 Everybody in Jerusalem heard about it and the plot came to be cal ed "Bloody Acre", in their languageHakeldama.	19 E la cosa si è risaputa da tutti quanti gli abitatori di Gerusalemme per modo, che quel campo è venuto a chiamarsi nel loro linguaggio Haceldama, cioè Campo del sangue.
20 Now in the Book of Psalms it says: Reduce his encampment to ruin and leave his tent unoccupied. Andagain: Let someone else take over his office.	20 Ora sta scritto nel libro de' Salmi: Diventi la loro abitazione un deserto, né siavi chi abiti in essa: e l'ufficio di lui lo abbia un altro.
21 'Out of the men who have been with us the whole time that the Lord Jesus was living with us,	21 Bisogna adunque, che di questi uomini, i quali sono stati uniti con noi per tutto quel tempo, in cui fé' sua di mora tra noi il Signore Gesù,
22 from the time when John was baptising until the day when he was taken up from us, one must beappointed to serve with us as a witness to his resurrection.'	22 Cominciando dal battesimo di Giovanni sino al giorno, in cui tolto a noi fu assunto, uno di questi sia costituito testimone con noi della risurrezione di lui.
23 Having nominated two candidates, Joseph known as Barsabbas, whose surname was Justus, andMatthias,	23 E ne nominarono due, Giuseppe detto Barsaba soprannominato il Giusto, e Mattia.
24 they prayed, 'Lord, you can read everyone's heart; show us therefore which of these two you havechosen	24 E fecero orazione, dicendo: Tu, o Signore, che vedi i cuori di tutti, dichiara, quale di questi due abbi eletto
25 to take over this ministry and apostolate, which Judas abandoned to go to his proper place.'	25 A ricevere il posto di questo ministero, e Apostolato, da cui traviò Giuda per andare al suo luogo.
26 They then drew lots for them, and as the lot fel to Matthias, he was listed as one of the twelveapostles.	26 E tirarono a sorte, e toccò la sorte a Mattia, ed egli fu aggregato agli undici Apostoli.
