NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
There was one of the Pharisees called Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews,1 Erat autem homo ex pharisæis, Nicodemus nomine, princeps Judæorum.
who came to Jesus by night and said, 'Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher; forno one could perform the signs that you do unless God were with him.'2 Hic venit ad Jesum nocte, et dixit ei : Rabbi, scimus quia a Deo venisti magister, nemo enim potest hæc signa facere, quæ tu facis, nisi fuerit Deus cum eo.
Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born fromabove.3 Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei : Amen, amen dico tibi, nisi quis renatus fuerit denuo, non potest videre regnum Dei.
Nicodemus said, 'How can anyone who is already old be born? Is it possible to go back into the wombagain and be born?'4 Dicit ad eum Nicodemus : Quomodo potest homo nasci, cum sit senex ? numquid potest in ventrem matris suæ iterato introire et renasci ?
Jesus replied: In al truth I tel you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born throughwater and the Spirit;5 Respondit Jesus : Amen, amen dico tibi, nisi quis renatus fuerit ex aqua, et Spiritu Sancto, non potest introire in regnum Dei.
what is born of human nature is human; what is born of the Spirit is spirit.6 Quod natum est ex carne, caro est : et quod natum est ex spiritu, spiritus est.
Do not be surprised when I say: You must be born from above.7 Non mireris quia dixi tibi : oportet vos nasci denuo.
The wind blows where it pleases; you can hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from orwhere it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.8 Spiritus ubi vult spirat, et vocem ejus audis, sed nescis unde veniat, aut quo vadat : sic est omnis qui natus est ex spiritu.
'How is that possible?' asked Nicodemus.9 Respondit Nicodemus, et dixit ei : Quomodo possunt hæc fieri ?
Jesus replied, 'You are the Teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things!10 Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei : Tu es magister in Israël, et hæc ignoras ?
'In al truth I tel you, we speak only about what we know and witness only to what we have seen and yet you people reject our evidence.11 Amen, amen dico tibi, quia quod scimus loquimur, et quod vidimus testamur, et testimonium nostrum non accipitis.
If you do not believe me when I speak to you about earthly things, how wil you believe me when Ispeak to you about heavenly things?12 Si terrena dixi vobis, et non creditis : quomodo, si dixero vobis cælestia, credetis ?
No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of man;13 Et nemo ascendit in cælum, nisi qui descendit de cælo, Filius hominis, qui est in cælo.
as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up14 Et sicut Moyses exaltavit serpentem in deserto, ita exaltari oportet Filium hominis :
so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.15 ut omnis qui credit in ipsum, non pereat, sed habeat vitam æternam.
For this is how God loved the world: he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him maynot perish but may have eternal life.16 Sic enim Deus dilexit mundum, ut Filium suum unigenitum daret : ut omnis qui credit in eum, non pereat, sed habeat vitam æternam.
For God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but so that through him the world might besaved.17 Non enim misit Deus Filium suum in mundum, ut judicet mundum, sed ut salvetur mundus per ipsum.
No one who believes in him wil be judged; but whoever does not believe is judged already, becausethat person does not believe in the Name of God's only Son.18 Qui credit in eum, non judicatur ; qui autem non credit, jam judicatus est : quia non credit in nomine unigeniti Filii Dei.
And the judgement is this: though the light has come into the world people have preferred darkness tothe light because their deeds were evil.19 Hoc est autem judicium : quia lux venit in mundum, et dilexerunt homines magis tenebras quam lucem : erant enim eorum mala opera.
And indeed, everybody who does wrong hates the light and avoids it, to prevent his actions from beingshown up;20 Omnis enim qui male agit, odit lucem, et non venit ad lucem, ut non arguantur opera ejus :
but whoever does the truth comes out into the light, so that what he is doing may plainly appear asdone in God.'21 qui autem facit veritatem, venit ad lucem, ut manifestentur opera ejus, quia in Deo sunt facta.
After this, Jesus went with his disciples into the Judaean countryside and stayed with them there andbaptised.22 Post hæc venit Jesus et discipuli ejus in terram Judæam : et illic demorabatur cum eis, et baptizabat.
John also was baptising at Aenon near Salim, where there was plenty of water, and people were goingthere and were being baptised.23 Erat autem et Joannes baptizans, in Ænnon, juxta Salim : quia aquæ multæ erant illic, et veniebant et baptizabantur.
For John had not yet been put in prison.24 Nondum enim missus fuerat Joannes in carcerem.
Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew about purification,25 Facta est autem quæstio ex discipulis Joannis cum Judæis de purificatione.
so they went to John and said, 'Rabbi, the man who was with you on the far side of the Jordan, theman to whom you bore witness, is baptising now, and everyone is going to him.'26 Et venerunt ad Joannem, et dixerunt ei : Rabbi, qui erat tecum trans Jordanem, cui tu testimonium perhibuisti, ecce hic baptizat, et omnes veniunt ad eum.
John replied: 'No one can have anything except what is given him from heaven.27 Respondit Joannes, et dixit : Non potest homo accipere quidquam, nisi fuerit ei datum de cælo.
'You yourselves can bear me out. I said, "I am not the Christ; I am the one who has been sent to go infront of him."28 Ipsi vos mihi testimonium perhibetis, quod dixerim : Non sum ego Christus : sed quia missus sum ante illum.
'It is the bridegroom who has the bride; and yet the bridegroom's friend, who stands there and listensto him, is fil ed with joy at the bridegroom's voice. This is the joy I feel, and it is complete.29 Qui habet sponsam, sponsus est : amicus autem sponsi, qui stat, et audit eum, gaudio gaudet propter vocem sponsi. Hoc ergo gaudium meum impletum est.
He must grow greater, I must grow less.30 Illum oportet crescere, me autem minui.
He who comes from above is above al others; he who is of the earth is earthly himself and speaks inan earthly way. He who comes from heaven31 Qui desursum venit, super omnes est. Qui est de terra, de terra est, et de terra loquitur. Qui de cælo venit, super omnes est.
bears witness to the things he has seen and heard, but his testimony is not accepted by anybody;32 Et quod vidit, et audivit, hoc testatur : et testimonium ejus nemo accipit.
though anyone who does accept his testimony is attesting that God is true,33 Qui accepit ejus testimonium signavit, quia Deus verax est.
since he whom God has sent speaks God's own words, for God gives him the Spirit without reserve.34 Quem enim misit Deus, verba Dei loquitur : non enim ad mensuram dat Deus spiritum.
The Father loves the Son and has entrusted everything to his hands.35 Pater diligit Filium et omnia dedit in manu ejus.
Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life, but anyone who refuses to believe in the Son willnever see life: God's retribution hangs over him.'36 Qui credit in Filium, habet vitam æternam ; qui autem incredulus est Filio, non videbit vitam, sed ira Dei manet super eum.
