NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
There was one of the Pharisees called Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews,1 Erat autem homo ex pharisaeis, Nicodemus nomine, princeps Iudaeorum;
who came to Jesus by night and said, 'Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher; forno one could perform the signs that you do unless God were with him.'2 hic venit ad eum nocte et dixit ei: “ Rabbi, scimus quia a Deo venistimagister; nemo enim potest haec signa facere, quae tu facis, nisi fuerit Deuscum eo ”.
Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born fromabove.3 Respondit Iesus et dixit ei: “ Amen, amen dico tibi: Nisi quisnatus fuerit desuper, non potest videre regnum Dei ”.
Nicodemus said, 'How can anyone who is already old be born? Is it possible to go back into the wombagain and be born?'4 Dicit ad eumNicodemus: “ Quomodo potest homo nasci, cum senex sit? Numquid potest inventrem matris suae iterato introire et nasci? ”.
Jesus replied: In al truth I tel you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born throughwater and the Spirit;5 Respondit Iesus: “ Amen,amen dico tibi: Nisi quis natus fuerit ex aqua et Spiritu, non potest introirein regnum Dei.
what is born of human nature is human; what is born of the Spirit is spirit.6 Quod natum est ex carne, caro est; et, quod natum est exSpiritu, spiritus est.
Do not be surprised when I say: You must be born from above.7 Non mireris quia dixi tibi: Oportet vos nasci denuo.
The wind blows where it pleases; you can hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from orwhere it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.8 Spiritus, ubi vult, spirat, et vocem eius audis, sed non scis unde veniat et quovadat; sic est omnis, qui natus est ex Spiritu ”.
'How is that possible?' asked Nicodemus.9 Respondit Nicodemus etdixit ei: “ Quomodo possunt haec fieri? ”.
Jesus replied, 'You are the Teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things!10 Respondit Iesus et dixit ei:“ Tu es magister Israel et haec ignoras?
'In al truth I tel you, we speak only about what we know and witness only to what we have seen and yet you people reject our evidence.11 Amen, amen dico tibi: Quod scimus,loquimur et, quod vidimus, testamur; et testimonium nostrum non accipitis.
If you do not believe me when I speak to you about earthly things, how wil you believe me when Ispeak to you about heavenly things?12 Siterrena dixi vobis, et non creditis, quomodo, si dixero vobis caelestia,credetis?
No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of man;13 Et nemo ascendit in caelum, nisi qui descendit de caelo, Filiushominis.
as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up14 Et sicut Moyses exaltavit serpentem in deserto, ita exaltari oportetFilium hominis,
so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.15 ut omnis, qui credit, in ipso habeat vitam aeternam ”.
For this is how God loved the world: he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him maynot perish but may have eternal life.16 Sic enim dilexit Deus mundum, ut Filium suum unigenitum daret, ut omnis, quicredit in eum, non pereat, sed habeat vitam aeternam.
For God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but so that through him the world might besaved.17 Non enim misit DeusFilium in mundum, ut iudicet mundum, sed ut salvetur mundus per ipsum.
No one who believes in him wil be judged; but whoever does not believe is judged already, becausethat person does not believe in the Name of God's only Son.18 Quicredit in eum, non iudicatur; qui autem non credit, iam iudicatus est, quia noncredidit in nomen Unigeniti Filii Dei.
And the judgement is this: though the light has come into the world people have preferred darkness tothe light because their deeds were evil.19 Hoc est autem iudicium: Lux venit inmundum, et dilexerunt homines magis tenebras quam lucem; erant enim eorum malaopera.
And indeed, everybody who does wrong hates the light and avoids it, to prevent his actions from beingshown up;20 Omnis enim, qui mala agit, odit lucem et non venit ad lucem, ut nonarguantur opera eius;
but whoever does the truth comes out into the light, so that what he is doing may plainly appear asdone in God.'21 qui autem facit veritatem, venit ad lucem, utmanifestentur eius opera, quia in Deo sunt facta.
After this, Jesus went with his disciples into the Judaean countryside and stayed with them there andbaptised.22 Post haec venit Iesus et discipuli eius in Iudaeam terram, et illicdemorabatur cum eis et baptizabat.
John also was baptising at Aenon near Salim, where there was plenty of water, and people were goingthere and were being baptised.23 Erat autem et Ioannes baptizans in Enoniuxta Salim, quia aquae multae erant illic, et adveniebant et baptizabantur;
For John had not yet been put in prison.24 nondum enim missus fuerat in carcerem Ioannes.
Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew about purification,25 Facta est ergo quaestio ex discipulis Ioannis cum Iudaeo de purificatione.
so they went to John and said, 'Rabbi, the man who was with you on the far side of the Jordan, theman to whom you bore witness, is baptising now, and everyone is going to him.'26 Et venerunt ad Ioannem et dixerunt ei: “ Rabbi, qui erat tecum trans Iordanem,cui tu testimonium perhibuisti, ecce hic baptizat, et omnes veniunt ad eum! ”.
John replied: 'No one can have anything except what is given him from heaven.27 Respondit Ioannes et dixit: “ Non potest homo accipere quidquam, nisifuerit ei datum de caelo.
'You yourselves can bear me out. I said, "I am not the Christ; I am the one who has been sent to go infront of him."28 Ipsi vos mihi testimonium perhibetis, quod dixerim:Non sum ego Christus, sed: Missus sum ante illum.
'It is the bridegroom who has the bride; and yet the bridegroom's friend, who stands there and listensto him, is fil ed with joy at the bridegroom's voice. This is the joy I feel, and it is complete.29 Qui habet sponsam, sponsusest; amicus autem sponsi, qui stat et audit eum, gaudio gaudet propter vocemsponsi. Hoc ergo gaudium meum impletum est.
He must grow greater, I must grow less.30 Illum oportet crescere, me autemminui ”.
He who comes from above is above al others; he who is of the earth is earthly himself and speaks inan earthly way. He who comes from heaven31 Qui de sursum venit, supra omnes est; qui est de terra, de terra est et deterra loquitur. Qui de caelo venit, supra omnes est;
bears witness to the things he has seen and heard, but his testimony is not accepted by anybody;32 et quod vidit etaudivit, hoc testatur, et testimonium eius nemo accipit.
though anyone who does accept his testimony is attesting that God is true,33 Qui accipit eiustestimonium, signavit quia Deus verax est.
since he whom God has sent speaks God's own words, for God gives him the Spirit without reserve.34 Quem enim misit Deus, verba Dei loquitur; non enim ad mensuram dat Spiritum.
The Father loves the Son and has entrusted everything to his hands.35 Pater diligit Filium et omnia dedit in manu eius.
Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life, but anyone who refuses to believe in the Son willnever see life: God's retribution hangs over him.'36 Qui credit in Filium,habet vitam aeternam; qui autem incredulus est Filio, non videbit vitam, sed iraDei manet super eum.
