Deuteronomy 8

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 'You must keep and put into practice al the commandments which I enjoin on you today, so that youmay survive and increase in numbers and enter the country which Yahweh promised on oath to your ancestors,and make it your own.	1 Baderete di praticare tutti gli ordinamenti che oggi ti prescrivo, perché viviate, vi moltiplichiate, e andiate a conquistare la terra che il Signore ha promesso con giuramento ai vostri padri.
2 Remember the long road by which Yahweh your God led you for forty years in the desert, to humbleyou, to test you and know your inmost heart -- whether you would keep his commandments or not.	2 Ricorda il cammino che ti ha fatto compiere il Signore tuo Dio in questi quarant'anni nel deserto, per umiliarti, per provarti, per conoscere ciò ch'è nel tuo cuore, se tu avessi osservato i suoi precetti o no.
3 He humbled you, he made you feel hunger, he fed you with manna which neither you nor yourancestors had ever known, to make you understand that human beings live not on bread alone but on everyword that comes from the mouth of Yahweh.	3 Ti ha umiliato, ti ha fatto provare la fame, ti ha fatto mangiare la manna che tu non conoscevi né conoscevano i tuoi padri, per insegnarti che non di solo pane vive l'uomo, ma di tutto ciò che esce dalla bocca di Dio vive l'uomo.
4 The clothes on your back did not wear out and your feet were not swol en, all those forty years.	4 Il tuo mantello non si è logorato e non si sono gonfiati i tuoi piedi in questi quarant'anni.
5 'Learn from this that Yahweh your God was training you as a man trains his child,	5 Riconosci dunque nel tuo cuore che, come un padre corregge il figlio, così il Signore tuo Dio ti corregge;
6 and keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, and so follow his ways and fear him.	6 e osserva il comandamento del Signore tuo Dio seguendo la sua via e temendolo.
7 'But Yahweh your God is bringing you into a fine country, a land of streams and springs, of waters thatwel up from the deep in val eys and hil s,	7 Poiché il Signore tuo Dio sta per introdurti in una terra buona, terra di torrenti, fonti e abissi che sgorgano nelle valli e nella montagna,
8 a land of wheat and barley, of vines, of figs, of pomegranates, a land of olives, of oil, of honey,	8 terra di frumento, orzo, viti, fichi e melograni, terra di oliveti e miele,
9 a land where you will eat bread without stint, where you wil want nothing, a land where the stones areiron and where the hil s may be quarried for copper.	9 terra dove non mangerai il pane nella miseria e dove non ti mancherà nulla, terra le cui pietre sono di ferro e dalle cui montagne estrarrai il rame.
10 You wil eat and have al you want and you wil bless Yahweh your God in the fine country which hehas given you.	10 Mangerai, sarai sazio e benedirai il Signore tuo Dio per la buona terra che ti ha donato.
11 'Be careful not to forget Yahweh your God, by neglecting his commandments, customs and lawswhich I am laying down for you today.	11 Guardati dal dimenticare il Signore tuo Dio, non osservando i suoi precetti, decreti e prescrizioni che oggi io ti ordino;
12 When you have eaten al you want, when you have built fine houses to live in,	12 quando mangerai e sarai sazio, costruirai belle case e vi abiterai,
13 when you have seen your flocks and herds increase, your silver and gold abound and all yourpossessions grow great,	13 si moltiplicherà il tuo bestiame grosso e quello minuto, ti si moltiplicherà l'argento e l'oro e si moltiplicheranno tutti i tuoi beni,
14 do not become proud of heart. Do not then forget Yahweh your God who brought you out of Egypt, outof the place of slave-labour,	14 il tuo cuore non si inorgoglisca così da dimenticare il Signore tuo Dio che ti ha fatto uscire dalla terra d'Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitù,
15 who guided you through this vast and dreadful desert, a land of fiery snakes, scorpions, thirst;	15 che ti ha condotto attraverso il deserto grande e terribile di serpenti brucianti e scorpioni, luogo di sete e senz'acqua; che ha fatto scaturire per te acqua dalla pietra di silice;
16 who in this waterless place brought you water out of the flinty rock; who in this desert fed you withmanna unknown to your ancestors, to humble you and test you and so make your future the happier.	16 che ti ha dato da mangiare la manna nel deserto, che non conoscevano i tuoi padri, per umiliarti, per provarti e affinché tu fossi felice in avvenire.
17 'Beware of thinking to yourself, "My own strength and the might of my own hand have given me thepower to act like this."	17 Non dire nel tuo cuore: "La mia forza e la robustezza della mia mano mi ha procurato questa potenza".
18 Remember Yahweh your God; he was the one who gave you the strength to act effectively like this,thus keeping then, as today, the covenant which he swore to your ancestors.	18 Ricordati del Signore tuo Dio, poiché lui ti ha dato la forza di procurarti questa potenza, per mantenere l'alleanza che ha giurato ai tuoi padri, come è ancora oggi.
19 Be sure: if you forget Yahweh your God, if you fol ow other gods, if you serve them and bow down tothem -- I testify to you today -- you wil perish.	19 Se dimenticherai completamente il Signore tuo Dio, seguirai altri dèi e li servirai prostrandoti innanzi a loro, oggi io testimonio contro di voi: certo perirete.
20 Like the nations Yahweh is to destroy before you, so you yourselves will perish, for not having listenedto the voice of Yahweh your God.'	20 Come le nazioni che il Signore sta per far perire innanzi a voi, così anche voi perirete, perché non avete ascoltato la voce del Signore vostro Dio.
