NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
'You must keep and put into practice al the commandments which I enjoin on you today, so that youmay survive and increase in numbers and enter the country which Yahweh promised on oath to your ancestors, and make it your own.1 All the commandments, that I command thee this day, take great care to observe: that you may live, and be multiplied, and going in may possess the land, for which the Lord swore to your fathers.
Remember the long road by which Yahweh your God led you for forty years in the desert, to humbleyou, to test you and know your inmost heart -- whether you would keep his commandments or not.2 And thou shalt remember all the way through which the Lord thy God hath brought thee for forty years through the desert, to afflict thee and to prove thee, and that the things that were in thy heart might be made known, whether thou wouldst keep his commandments or no.
He humbled you, he made you feel hunger, he fed you with manna which neither you nor yourancestors had ever known, to make you understand that human beings live not on bread alone but on everyword that comes from the mouth of Yahweh.3 He afflicted thee with want, and gave thee manna for thy food, which neither thou nor thy fathers knew: to shew that m not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God.
The clothes on your back did not wear out and your feet were not swol en, all those forty years.4 Thy raiment, with which thou wast covered, hath not decayed for age, and thy foot is not worn, lo this is the fortieth year,
'Learn from this that Yahweh your God was training you as a man trains his child,5 That thou mayst consider in thy heart, that as a man traineth up his son, so the Lord thy God hath trained thee up.
and keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, and so follow his ways and fear him.6 That thou shouldst keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in his ways, and fear him.
'But Yahweh your God is bringing you into a fine country, a land of streams and springs, of waters thatwel up from the deep in val eys and hil s,7 For the Lord thy God will bring thee into a good land, of brooks and of waters, and of fountains: in the plains of which and the hills deep rivers break out:
a land of wheat and barley, of vines, of figs, of pomegranates, a land of olives, of oil, of honey,8 A land of wheat, and barley, and vineyards, wherein fig trees and pomegranates, and oliveyards grow: a land of oil and honey.
a land where you will eat bread without stint, where you wil want nothing, a land where the stones areiron and where the hil s may be quarried for copper.9 Where without any want thou shalt eat thy bread, and enjoy abundance of all things: where the stones are iron, and out of its hills are dug mines of brass:
You wil eat and have al you want and you wil bless Yahweh your God in the fine country which hehas given you.10 That when thou hast eaten, and art full, thou mayst bless the Lord thy God for the excellent land which he hath given thee.
'Be careful not to forget Yahweh your God, by neglecting his commandments, customs and lawswhich I am laying down for you today.11 Take heed, and beware lest at any time thou forget the Lord thy God, and neglect his commandments and judgments and ceremonies, which I command thee this day:
When you have eaten al you want, when you have built fine houses to live in,12 Lest after thou hast eaten and art filled, hast built goodly houses, and dwelt in them,
when you have seen your flocks and herds increase, your silver and gold abound and all yourpossessions grow great,13 And shalt have herds of oxen and flocks of sheep, and plenty of gold and of silver, and of all things,
do not become proud of heart. Do not then forget Yahweh your God who brought you out of Egypt, outof the place of slave-labour,14 Thy heart be lifted up, and thou remember not the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage:
who guided you through this vast and dreadful desert, a land of fiery snakes, scorpions, thirst;15 And was thy leader in the great and terrible wilderness, wherein there was the serpent burning with his breath, and the scorpion and the dipsas, and no waters at all: who brought forth streams out of the hardest rock,
who in this waterless place brought you water out of the flinty rock; who in this desert fed you withmanna unknown to your ancestors, to humble you and test you and so make your future the happier.16 And fed thee in the wilderness with manna which thy fathers knew not. And after he had afflicted and proved thee, at the last he had mercy on thee,
'Beware of thinking to yourself, "My own strength and the might of my own hand have given me thepower to act like this."17 Lest thou shouldst say in thy heart: My own might, and the strength of my own hand have achieved all these things for me.
Remember Yahweh your God; he was the one who gave you the strength to act effectively like this, thus keeping then, as today, the covenant which he swore to your ancestors.18 But remember the Lord thy God, that he hath given thee strength, that he might fulfil his covenant, concerning which he swore to thy fathers, as this present day sheweth.
Be sure: if you forget Yahweh your God, if you fol ow other gods, if you serve them and bow down tothem -- I testify to you today -- you wil perish.19 But if thou forget the Lord thy God, and follow strange gods, and serve and adore them: behold now I foretell thee that thou shalt utterly perish.
Like the nations Yahweh is to destroy before you, so you yourselves will perish, for not having listenedto the voice of Yahweh your God.'20 As the nations, which the Lord destroyed at thy entrance, so shall you also perish, if you be disobedient to the voice of the Lord your God.
