Deuteronomy 8

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 'You must keep and put into practice al the commandments which I enjoin on you today, so that youmay survive and increase in numbers and enter the country which Yahweh promised on oath to your ancestors,and make it your own.	1 Vous garderez tous les commandements que je vous ordonne aujourd'hui de mettre enpratique, afin que vous viviez, que vous multipliiez et que vous entriez dans le pays que Yahvé a promis parserment à vos pères et le possédiez.
2 Remember the long road by which Yahweh your God led you for forty years in the desert, to humbleyou, to test you and know your inmost heart -- whether you would keep his commandments or not.	2 Souviens-toi de tout le chemin que Yahvé ton Dieu t'a fait faire pendant 40 ans dans le désert,afin de t'humilier, de t'éprouver et de connaître le fond de ton coeur: allais-tu ou non garder sescommandements?
3 He humbled you, he made you feel hunger, he fed you with manna which neither you nor yourancestors had ever known, to make you understand that human beings live not on bread alone but on everyword that comes from the mouth of Yahweh.	3 Il t'a humilié, il t'a fait sentir la faim, il t'a donné à manger la manne que ni toi ni tes pèresn'aviez connue, pour te montrer que l'homme ne vit pas seulement de pain, mais que l'homme vit de tout ce quisort de la bouche de Yahvé.
4 The clothes on your back did not wear out and your feet were not swol en, all those forty years.	4 Le vêtement que tu portais ne s'est pas usé et ton pied n'a pas enflé, au cours de ces 40 ans!
5 'Learn from this that Yahweh your God was training you as a man trains his child,	5 Comprends donc que Yahvé ton Dieu te corrigeait comme un père corrige son enfant,
6 and keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, and so follow his ways and fear him.	6 et garde les commandements de Yahvé ton Dieu pour marcher dans ses voies et pour lecraindre.
7 'But Yahweh your God is bringing you into a fine country, a land of streams and springs, of waters thatwel up from the deep in val eys and hil s,	7 Mais Yahvé ton Dieu te conduit vers un heureux pays, pays de cours d'eau, de sources quisourdent de l'abîme dans les vallées comme dans les montagnes,
8 a land of wheat and barley, of vines, of figs, of pomegranates, a land of olives, of oil, of honey,	8 pays de froment et d'orge, de vigne, de figuiers et de grenadiers, pays d'oliviers, d'huile et demiel,
9 a land where you will eat bread without stint, where you wil want nothing, a land where the stones areiron and where the hil s may be quarried for copper.	9 pays où le pain ne te sera pas mesuré et où tu ne manqueras de rien, pays où il y a des pierresde fer et d'où tu extrairas, dans la montagne, le bronze.
10 You wil eat and have al you want and you wil bless Yahweh your God in the fine country which hehas given you.	10 Tu mangeras, tu te rassasieras et tu béniras Yahvé ton Dieu en cet heureux pays qu'il t'adonné.
11 'Be careful not to forget Yahweh your God, by neglecting his commandments, customs and lawswhich I am laying down for you today.	11 Garde-toi d'oublier Yahvé ton Dieu en négligeant ses commandements, ses coutumes et seslois que je te prescris aujourd'hui.
12 When you have eaten al you want, when you have built fine houses to live in,	12 Quand tu auras mangé et te seras rassasié, quand tu auras bâti de belles maisons et leshabiteras,
13 when you have seen your flocks and herds increase, your silver and gold abound and all yourpossessions grow great,	13 quand tu auras vu multiplier ton gros et ton petit bétail, abonder ton argent et ton or,s'accroître tous tes biens,
14 do not become proud of heart. Do not then forget Yahweh your God who brought you out of Egypt, outof the place of slave-labour,	14 que tout cela n'élève pas ton coeur! N'oublie pas alors Yahvé ton Dieu qui t'a fait sortir dupays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude:
15 who guided you through this vast and dreadful desert, a land of fiery snakes, scorpions, thirst;	15 lui qui t'a fait passer à travers ce désert grand et redoutable, pays des serpents brûlants, desscorpions et de la soif; lui qui dans un lieu sans eau a fait pour toi jaillir l'eau de la roche la plus dure;
16 who in this waterless place brought you water out of the flinty rock; who in this desert fed you withmanna unknown to your ancestors, to humble you and test you and so make your future the happier.	16 lui qui dans le désert t'a donné à manger la manne, inconnue de tes pères, afin de t'humilier etde t'éprouver pour que ton avenir soit heureux!
17 'Beware of thinking to yourself, "My own strength and the might of my own hand have given me thepower to act like this."	17 Garde-toi de dire en ton coeur: "C'est ma force, c'est la vigueur de ma main qui m'ont faitagir avec cette puissance."
18 Remember Yahweh your God; he was the one who gave you the strength to act effectively like this,thus keeping then, as today, the covenant which he swore to your ancestors.	18 Souviens-toi de Yahvé ton Dieu: c'est lui qui t'a donné cette force, pour agir avec puissance,gardant ainsi, comme aujourd'hui, l'alliance jurée à tes pères.
19 Be sure: if you forget Yahweh your God, if you fol ow other gods, if you serve them and bow down tothem -- I testify to you today -- you wil perish.	19 Certes, si tu oublies Yahvé ton Dieu, si tu suis d'autres dieux, si tu les sers et te prosternesdevant eux, j'en témoigne aujourd'hui contre vous, vous périrez.
20 Like the nations Yahweh is to destroy before you, so you yourselves will perish, for not having listenedto the voice of Yahweh your God.'	20 Comme les nations que Yahvé aura fait périr devant vous, ainsi vous-même périrez, pourn'avoir pas écouté la voix de Yahvé votre Dieu.
