NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
'When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater thanyour own, you must not be afraid of them; Yahweh your God is with you, he who brought you out of Egypt.1 Si exieris ad bellum contra hostes tuos, et videris equitatus et currus, et majorem quam tu habeas adversarii exercitus multitudinem, non timebis eos : quia Dominus Deus tuus tecum est, qui eduxit te de terra Ægypti.
When you are about to join battle, the priest must come forward and address the people.2 Appropinquante autem jam prælio, stabit sacerdos ante aciem, et sic loquetur ad populum :
He must say to them, "Listen, Israel: today you are about to join battle with your enemies. Do not befaint hearted. Let there be no fear or trembling or alarm as you face them.3 Audi, Israël : vos hodie contra inimicos vestros pugnam committitis : non pertimescat cor vestrum, nolite metuere, nolite cedere, nec formidetis eos :
Yahweh your God is marching with you, to fight your enemies for you and make you victorious."4 quia Dominus Deus vester in medio vestri est, et pro vobis contra adversarios dimicabit, ut eruat vos de periculo.
'The scribes wil then address the people, as follows: "Has anyone built a new house and not yetdedicated it? Let him go home, in case he dies in battle and someone else performs the dedication.5 Duces quoque per singulas turmas audiente exercitu proclamabunt : Quis est homo qui ædificavit domum novam, et non dedicavit eam ? vadat, et revertatur in domum suam, ne forte moriatur in bello, et alius dedicet eam.
"Has anyone planted a vineyard and not yet enjoyed its fruit? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else enjoys its fruit.6 Quis est homo qui plantavit vineam, et necdum fecit eam esse communem, de qua vesci omnibus liceat ? vadat, et revertatur in domum suam, ne forte moriatur in bello, et alius homo ejus fungatur officio.
"Has anyone contracted to marry a girl and not yet married her? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else marries her."7 Quis est homo, qui despondit uxorem, et non accepit eam ? vadat, et revertatur in domum suam, ne forte moriatur in bello, et alius homo accipiat eam.
'Final y, the scribes wil say to the people: "Is anyone frightened or faint hearted? Let him go home, incase he makes his brothers faint hearted too!"8 His dictis addent reliqua, et loquentur ad populum : Quis est homo formidolosus, et corde pavido ? vadat, et revertatur in domum suam, ne pavere faciat corda fratrum suorum, sicut ipse timore perterritus est.
'Then, when the scribes have finished speaking to the people, commanders wil be appointed to leadthem.9 Cumque siluerint duces exercitus, et finem loquendi fecerint, unusquisque suos ad bellandum cuneos præparabit.
'When you advance on a town to attack it, first offer it peace-terms.10 Siquando accesseris ad expugnandam civitatem, offeres ei primum pacem.
If it accepts these and opens its gates to you, all the people inside wil owe you forced labour andwork for you.11 Si receperit, et aperuerit tibi portas, cunctus populus, qui in ea est, salvabitur, et serviet tibi sub tributo.
But if it refuses peace and gives battle, you must besiege it.12 Sin autem fœdus inire noluerit, et cœperit contra te bellum, oppugnabis eam.
Yahweh your God having handed it over to you, you wil put the whole male population to the sword.13 Cumque tradiderit Dominus Deus tuus illam in manu tua, percuties omne quod in ea generis masculini est, in ore gladii,
But the women, children, livestock and whatever the town contains by way of spoil, you may take foryourselves as booty. You will feed on the spoils of the enemies whom Yahweh your God has handed over toyou.14 absque mulieribus et infantibus, jumentis et ceteris quæ in civitate sunt. Omnem prædam exercitui divides, et comedes de spoliis hostium tuorum, quæ Dominus Deus tuus dederit tibi.
'That is how you will treat towns far away and not belonging to the nations near you.15 Sic facies cunctis civitatibus, quæ a te procul valde sunt, et non sunt de his urbibus, quas in possessionem accepturus es.
But as regards the towns of those peoples whom Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage, you must not spare the life of any living thing.16 De his autem civitatibus, quæ dabuntur tibi, nullum omnino permittes vivere :
Instead, you must lay them under the curse of destruction: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites,Hivites and Jebusites, as Yahweh your God has commanded,17 sed interficies in ore gladii, Hethæum videlicet, et Amorrhæum, et Chananæum, Pherezæum, et Hevæum, et Jebusæum, sicut præcepit tibi Dominus Deus tuus :
so that they may not teach you to do al the detestable things which they do to honour their gods: indoing these, you would sin against Yahweh your God.18 ne forte doceant vos facere cunctas abominationes, quas ipsi operati sunt diis suis, et peccetis in Dominum Deum vestrum.
'If, when attacking a town, you have to besiege it for a long time before you capture it, you must notdestroy its trees by taking the axe to them: eat their fruit but do not cut them down. Is the tree in the fieldshuman, that you should besiege it too?19 Quando obsederis civitatem multo tempore, et munitionibus circumdederis ut expugnes eam, non succides arbores, de quibus vesci potest, nec securibus per circuitum debes vastare regionem : quoniam lignum est, et non homo, nec potest bellantium contra te augere numerum.
Any trees, however, which you know are not fruit trees, you may destroy and cut down and use tobuild siege-works against the hostile town until it fal s.'20 Si qua autem ligna non sunt pomifera, sed agrestia, et in ceteros apta usus, succide, et instrue machinas, donec capias civitatem, quæ contra te dimicat.
