Deuteronomy 20

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 'When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater thanyour own, you must not be afraid of them; Yahweh your God is with you, he who brought you out of Egypt.	1 Quando andrai a combattere contro i tuoi nemici, e vedrai cavalli, carri e schiere uemiche più numerose delle tue, non ne aver paura, perchè è teco il Signore Dio tuo che ti trasse dalla terra d'Egitto.
2 When you are about to join battle, the priest must come forward and address the people.	2 quando è vicina la battaglia, il sacerdote starà davanti all'armata, e così dirà al popolo:
3 He must say to them, "Listen, Israel: today you are about to join battle with your enemies. Do not befaint hearted. Let there be no fear or trembling or alarm as you face them.	3 Ascolta, Israele: Voi oggi date battaglia ai vostri nemici; non si scoraggi il vostro cuore, non temete, non date indietro, non abbiate paura;
4 Yahweh your God is marching with you, to fight your enemies for you and make you victorious."	4 perchè il Signore Dio vostro è in mezzo a voi, e combatterà per voi contro i vostri nemici fino a darvi la vittoria.
5 'The scribes wil then address the people, as follows: "Has anyone built a new house and not yetdedicated it? Let him go home, in case he dies in battle and someone else performs the dedication.	5 Poi i capi, facendosi sentire da tutto l'esercito, grideranno in eiascuna schiera: C'è qualcuno che abbia edificata una casa nuova e non abbia potuto ancora abitarla? Vada, torni a casa sua, chè don muoia nella battaglia e un altro la abiti.
6 "Has anyone planted a vineyard and not yet enjoyed its fruit? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else enjoys its fruit.	6 C'è qualcuno che abbia piantato una vigna e non abbia ancora potuto far che sia comune, cioè che tutti ne possano mangiare i frutti? Vada, torni a casa sua, che per disgrazia non muoia in battaglia e faccia un altro quello che avrebbe dovuto far lui.
7 "Has anyone contracted to marry a girl and not yet married her? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else marries her."	7 C'è qualcuno che si sia fidanzato con una donna senza averla ancora sposata? Vada, torni a casa sua, chè per disgrazia non muoia nella battaglia e la sposi un altro.
8 'Final y, the scribes wil say to the people: "Is anyone frightened or faint hearted? Let him go home, incase he makes his brothers faint hearted too!"	8 Dette queste cose, parleranno ancora al popolo e diranno: Chi è pauroso e senza coraggio? Vada, torni a casa sua, chè non attacchi la paura al cuore dei fratelli, pieno di paura com'è.
9 'Then, when the scribes have finished speaking to the people, commanders wil be appointed to leadthem.	9 Quando i capi dell'esercito avran finito di parlare, ciascuno ordinerà le sue schiere per la battaglia.
10 'When you advance on a town to attack it, first offer it peace-terms.	10 Quando ti avvicinerai ad espugnare una città, prima le offrirai la pace;
11 If it accepts these and opens its gates to you, all the people inside wil owe you forced labour andwork for you.	11 se l'accetterà e t'aprirà le porte, tutto il popolo che si trova in essa sarà salvo, e ti sarà soggetto e tributario.
12 But if it refuses peace and gives battle, you must besiege it.	12 Ma se non vorrà venire a patti, e comincerà la guerra contro di te, tu l'assedierai;
13 Yahweh your God having handed it over to you, you wil put the whole male population to the sword.	13 e quando il Signore Dio tuo te l'avrà data nelle mani, metterai a fil di spada tutti i maschi che sono in essa,
14 But the women, children, livestock and whatever the town contains by way of spoil, you may take foryourselves as booty. You will feed on the spoils of the enemies whom Yahweh your God has handed over toyou.	14 lasciando le donne, i fanciulli, le bestie e tutto ciò che è in quella città. Distribuirai all'esercito tutta la preda, e mangerai delle spoglie dei tuoi nemici che il Signore Dio tuo t'avrà donate.
15 'That is how you will treat towns far away and not belonging to the nations near you.	15 Così farai a tutte quelle città che non molto lontane da te, e non sono nel numero di quelle che stai per possedere.
16 But as regards the towns of those peoples whom Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage,you must not spare the life of any living thing.	16 Però nelle città che ti saranno date, non lascerai anima viva;
17 Instead, you must lay them under the curse of destruction: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites,Hivites and Jebusites, as Yahweh your God has commanded,	17 ma metterai tutti a fil di spada: l'Eteo, l'Amorreo, il Cananeo, il Ferezeo, l'Eveo, il Gebuseo, come il Signore Dio tuo ti ha comandato;
18 so that they may not teach you to do al the detestable things which they do to honour their gods: indoing these, you would sin against Yahweh your God.	18 chè non t'insegnino a fare tutte le abbominazioni che essi hanno praticate verso i loro dèi, da farvi peccare contro il Signore Dio vostro.
19 'If, when attacking a town, you have to besiege it for a long time before you capture it, you must notdestroy its trees by taking the axe to them: eat their fruit but do not cut them down. Is the tree in the fieldshuman, that you should besiege it too?	19 Quando cingerai per lungo: tempo d'assedio una città, e l'avrai circondata di macchine per espugnarla, non taglierai le piante che dànno frutto i da mangiare, nè devasterai i dintorni a i colpi di scure, perchè sono alberi e non uomini, e non possono accrescere il numero di coloro che combattono contro di te.
20 Any trees, however, which you know are not fruit trees, you may destroy and cut down and use tobuild siege-works against the hostile town until it fal s.'	20 Se invece sono piante non fruttifere. selvatiche ed atte ad altri usi, tagliale per far delle macchine, finché non t'impadronisca della città che combatte contro di te.
