Deuteronomy 20

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 'When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater thanyour own, you must not be afraid of them; Yahweh your God is with you, he who brought you out of Egypt.	1 Quando andrai in guerra contro i tuoi nemici e vedrai cavalli, carri e un popolo più numeroso di te, non ne avere paura: perché il Signore tuo Dio è con te, lui che ti ha fatto uscire dalla terra d'Egitto.
2 When you are about to join battle, the priest must come forward and address the people.	2 Quando sarete vicini alla battaglia, si accosterà il sacerdote, parlerà al popolo
3 He must say to them, "Listen, Israel: today you are about to join battle with your enemies. Do not befaint hearted. Let there be no fear or trembling or alarm as you face them.	3 e dirà loro: "Ascolta, Israele, voi che state oggi per combattere contro i vostri nemici: non venga meno il vostro cuore, non abbiate paura, non spaventatevi e non tremate davanti a loro!
4 Yahweh your God is marching with you, to fight your enemies for you and make you victorious."	4 Perché il Signore vostro Dio avanza con voi per combattere contro i vostri nemici, per salvarvi".
5 'The scribes wil then address the people, as follows: "Has anyone built a new house and not yetdedicated it? Let him go home, in case he dies in battle and someone else performs the dedication.	5 I capi diranno al popolo: "Chi è l'uomo che ha costruito una casa nuova e non l'ha inaugurata? Vada e ritorni a casa sua, perché non muoia in battaglia e un altro la inauguri.
6 "Has anyone planted a vineyard and not yet enjoyed its fruit? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else enjoys its fruit.	6 Chi è l'uomo che ha piantato una vigna e non ne ha colto i primi frutti? Vada e ritorni a casa sua, perché non muoia in battaglia e un altro ne colga i primi frutti.
7 "Has anyone contracted to marry a girl and not yet married her? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else marries her."	7 Chi è l'uomo che si è fidanzato con una donna e non l'ha ancora presa con sé? Vada e ritorni a casa sua, perché non muoia in battaglia e un altro la prenda".
8 'Final y, the scribes wil say to the people: "Is anyone frightened or faint hearted? Let him go home, incase he makes his brothers faint hearted too!"	8 I capi diranno ancora al popolo: "Chi è l'uomo che ha paura e il suo cuore viene meno? Vada e ritorni a casa sua, perché non indebolisca il cuore dei suoi fratelli come il suo cuore".
9 'Then, when the scribes have finished speaking to the people, commanders wil be appointed to leadthem.	9 Quando i capi avranno finito di parlare al popolo, si costituiranno sul popolo i comandanti delle schiere.
10 'When you advance on a town to attack it, first offer it peace-terms.	10 Quando ti avvicinerai a una città per attaccarla, le proporrai la pace.
11 If it accepts these and opens its gates to you, all the people inside wil owe you forced labour andwork for you.	11 Se accetta la pace e ti aprirà le porte, allora tutto il popolo che vi si trova lavorerà per te e ti servirà.
12 But if it refuses peace and gives battle, you must besiege it.	12 Se invece non accetta la pace con te e ti farà guerra, la stringerai d'assedio,
13 Yahweh your God having handed it over to you, you wil put the whole male population to the sword.	13 e il Signore tuo Dio la metterà nelle tue mani. Passerai tutti i maschi a fil di spada,
14 But the women, children, livestock and whatever the town contains by way of spoil, you may take foryourselves as booty. You will feed on the spoils of the enemies whom Yahweh your God has handed over toyou.	14 mentre le donne, i bambini, il bestiame e quanto ci sarà nella città, tutte le sue spoglie, lo catturerai. Mangerai delle spoglie dei tuoi nemici che il Signore tuo Dio ti avrà concesso.
15 'That is how you will treat towns far away and not belonging to the nations near you.	15 Così farai a tutte le città molto lontane da te, quelle che non sono tra le città di queste nazioni.
16 But as regards the towns of those peoples whom Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage,you must not spare the life of any living thing.	16 Invece nelle città di questi popoli che il Signore tuo Dio ti dona in eredità non lascerai viva anima alcuna,
17 Instead, you must lay them under the curse of destruction: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites,Hivites and Jebusites, as Yahweh your God has commanded,	17 ma voterai allo sterminio Hittiti, Amorrei, Cananei, Perizziti, Evei e Gebusei, come ti ha ordinato il Signore tuo Dio,
18 so that they may not teach you to do al the detestable things which they do to honour their gods: indoing these, you would sin against Yahweh your God.	18 affinché non vi insegnino ad imitare tutti gli abomini che compiono per i loro dèi, e pecchiate contro il Signore vostro Dio.
19 'If, when attacking a town, you have to besiege it for a long time before you capture it, you must notdestroy its trees by taking the axe to them: eat their fruit but do not cut them down. Is the tree in the fieldshuman, that you should besiege it too?	19 Quando stringerai d'assedio una città per combatterla ed espugnarla, non rovinerai i suoi alberi brandendo contro di essi l'accetta; ne mangerai, ma non dovrai reciderli. Sono forse uomini gli alberi della campagna perché debbano sottostare al tuo assedio?
20 Any trees, however, which you know are not fruit trees, you may destroy and cut down and use tobuild siege-works against the hostile town until it fal s.'	20 Potrai soltanto rovinare o distruggere gli alberi che sai non essere da frutta, per costruire opere d'assedio contro la città che ti fa guerra, finché sia caduta.
