Deuteronomy 20

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 'When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater thanyour own, you must not be afraid of them; Yahweh your God is with you, he who brought you out of Egypt.	1 Cuando salgas a la guerra contra tus enemigos, y veas caballos, carros y un pueblo más numeroso que tú, no les tengas miedo; porque está contigo Yahveh tu Dios, el que te sacó del país de Egipto.
2 When you are about to join battle, the priest must come forward and address the people.	2 Cuando estéis para entablar combate, el sacerdote se adelantará y hablará al pueblo.
3 He must say to them, "Listen, Israel: today you are about to join battle with your enemies. Do not befaint hearted. Let there be no fear or trembling or alarm as you face them.	3 Les dirá: «Escucha, Israel; hoy vais a entablar combate con vuestros enemigos; no desmaye vuestro corazón, no tengáis miedo ni os turbéis, ni tembléis ante ellos,
4 Yahweh your God is marching with you, to fight your enemies for you and make you victorious."	4 porque Yahveh vuestro Dios marcha con vosotros para pelear en favor vuestro contra vuestros enemigos y salvaros».
5 'The scribes wil then address the people, as follows: "Has anyone built a new house and not yetdedicated it? Let him go home, in case he dies in battle and someone else performs the dedication.	5 Luego los escribas hablarán al pueblo y dirán: «¿Quién ha edificado una casa nueva y no la ha estrenado todavía? Váyase y vuelva a su casa, no sea que muera en el combate y la estrene otro hombre.
6 "Has anyone planted a vineyard and not yet enjoyed its fruit? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else enjoys its fruit.	6 «¿Quién ha plantado una viña y todavía no la ha disfrutado? Váyase y vuelva a su casa, no sea que muera en el combate y la disfrute otro.
7 "Has anyone contracted to marry a girl and not yet married her? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else marries her."	7 «¿Quién se ha desposado con una mujer y no se ha casado aún con ella? Váyase y vuelva a su casa, no sea que muera en el combate y se case con ella otro hombre».
8 'Final y, the scribes wil say to the people: "Is anyone frightened or faint hearted? Let him go home, incase he makes his brothers faint hearted too!"	8 Los escribas dirán además al pueblo: «¿Quién tiene miedo y siente enflaquecer su ánimo? Váyase y vuelva a su casa, para que no desanime el corazón de sus hermanos como lo está el suyo».
9 'Then, when the scribes have finished speaking to the people, commanders wil be appointed to leadthem.	9 En cuanto los escribas hayan acabado de hablar al pueblo, se pondrán al frente de él jefes de tropa.
10 'When you advance on a town to attack it, first offer it peace-terms.	10 Cuando te acerques a una ciudad para combatir contra ella, le propondrás la paz.
11 If it accepts these and opens its gates to you, all the people inside wil owe you forced labour andwork for you.	11 Si ella te responde con la paz y te abre sus puertas, todo el pueblo que se encuentre en ella te deberá tributo y te servirá.
12 But if it refuses peace and gives battle, you must besiege it.	12 Pero si no hace la paz contigo y te declara la guerra, la sitiarás.
13 Yahweh your God having handed it over to you, you wil put the whole male population to the sword.	13 Yahveh tu Dios la entregará en tus manos, y pasarás a filo de espada a todos sus varones;
14 But the women, children, livestock and whatever the town contains by way of spoil, you may take foryourselves as booty. You will feed on the spoils of the enemies whom Yahweh your God has handed over toyou.	14 las mujeres, los niños, el ganado, todo lo que haya en la ciudad, todos sus despojos, lo tomarás como botín. Comerás los despojos de los enemigos que Yahveh tu Dios te haya entregado.
15 'That is how you will treat towns far away and not belonging to the nations near you.	15 Así has de tratar a las ciudades muy alejadas de ti, que no forman parte de estas naciones.
16 But as regards the towns of those peoples whom Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage,you must not spare the life of any living thing.	16 En cuanto a las ciudades de estos pueblos que Yahveh tu Dios te da en herencia, no dejarás nada con vida,
17 Instead, you must lay them under the curse of destruction: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites,Hivites and Jebusites, as Yahweh your God has commanded,	17 sino que las consagrarás al anatema: a hititas, amorreos, cananeos, perizitas, jivitas, y jebuseos, como te ha mandado Yahveh tu Dios,
18 so that they may not teach you to do al the detestable things which they do to honour their gods: indoing these, you would sin against Yahweh your God.	18 para que no os enseñen a imitar todas esas abominaciones que ellos hacían en honor de sus dioses: ¡pecaríais contra Yahveh vuestro Dios!
19 'If, when attacking a town, you have to besiege it for a long time before you capture it, you must notdestroy its trees by taking the axe to them: eat their fruit but do not cut them down. Is the tree in the fieldshuman, that you should besiege it too?	19 Si, al atacar una ciudad, tienes que sitiarla mucho tiempo para tomarla, no destruirás su arbolado metiendo en él el hacha; te alimentarás de él sin talarlo. ¿Son acaso hombres los árboles del campo para que los trates como a sitiados?
20 Any trees, however, which you know are not fruit trees, you may destroy and cut down and use tobuild siege-works against the hostile town until it fal s.'	20 Sin embargo podrás destruir y cortar los árboles que sabes que no son frutales, y hacer con ellos obras de asedio contra esa ciudad que está en guerra contigo, hasta que caiga.
