Deuteronomy 20

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 'When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater thanyour own, you must not be afraid of them; Yahweh your God is with you, he who brought you out of Egypt.	1 Quando saíres à guerra contra teus inimigos e vires cavalos, carros e um exército mais numeroso que o teu, não tenhas medo, porque o Senhor, teu Deus, que te tirou do Egito, está contigo.
2 When you are about to join battle, the priest must come forward and address the people.	2 Quando se aproximar o momento do combate, o sacerdote se adiantará para falar ao povo: Ouve, Israel! lhe dirá ele.
3 He must say to them, "Listen, Israel: today you are about to join battle with your enemies. Do not befaint hearted. Let there be no fear or trembling or alarm as you face them.	3 Ides hoje combater contra os vossos inimigos: que vossa coragem não desfaleça! Não temais, nem vos perturbeis, nem vos deixeis amedrontar por eles.
4 Yahweh your God is marching with you, to fight your enemies for you and make you victorious."	4 Porque o Senhor, vosso Deus, marcha convosco para combater contra os vossos inimigos e para vos dar a vitória.
5 'The scribes wil then address the people, as follows: "Has anyone built a new house and not yetdedicated it? Let him go home, in case he dies in battle and someone else performs the dedication.	5 Os oficiais dirão em seguida ao povo: há alguém entre vós que tenha edificado uma casa e não a tenha ainda inaugurado? Que esse volte para a sua casa; não suceda que morra no combate e um outro venha a habitar primeiro do que ele em sua casa.
6 "Has anyone planted a vineyard and not yet enjoyed its fruit? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else enjoys its fruit.	6 Há alguém entre vós que tenha plantado uma vinha e não tenha ainda desfrutado dela? Que esse volte para a sua casa; não suceda que pereça no combate e outro venha a colher os primeiros frutos.
7 "Has anyone contracted to marry a girl and not yet married her? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else marries her."	7 Há alguém que tenha desposado uma mulher e não a tenha ainda recebido? Que esse volte para a sua casa; não suceda que morra no combate e outro a despose.
8 'Final y, the scribes wil say to the people: "Is anyone frightened or faint hearted? Let him go home, incase he makes his brothers faint hearted too!"	8 Os oficiais dirão ainda ao povo: há alguém medroso e de coração tímido? Que esse volte para a sua casa; não suceda que o coração de seus irmãos desfaleça como o seu.
9 'Then, when the scribes have finished speaking to the people, commanders wil be appointed to leadthem.	9 Quando os oficiais tiverem acabado de falar ao povo, serão colocados os chefes das tropas à testa do povo.
10 'When you advance on a town to attack it, first offer it peace-terms.	10 Quando te aproximares para combater uma cidade, oferecer-lhe-ás primeiramente a paz.
11 If it accepts these and opens its gates to you, all the people inside wil owe you forced labour andwork for you.	11 Se ela concordar e te abrir suas portas, toda a população te pagará tributo e te servirá.
12 But if it refuses peace and gives battle, you must besiege it.	12 Se te recusar a paz e começar a guerra contra ti, tu a cercarás,
13 Yahweh your God having handed it over to you, you wil put the whole male population to the sword.	13 e quando o Senhor, teu Deus, ta houver entregue nas mãos, passarás a fio de espada todos os varões que nela houver.
14 But the women, children, livestock and whatever the town contains by way of spoil, you may take foryourselves as booty. You will feed on the spoils of the enemies whom Yahweh your God has handed over toyou.	14 Só tomarás para ti as mulheres, as crianças, os rebanhos e tudo o que se encontrar na cidade, e viverás dos despojos dos teus inimigos que o Senhor, teu Deus, e tiver dado.
15 'That is how you will treat towns far away and not belonging to the nations near you.	15 Farás assim a todas as cidades muito afastadas, que não são do número das cidades dessas nações.
16 But as regards the towns of those peoples whom Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage,you must not spare the life of any living thing.	16 Quanto às cidades daqueles povos cuja possessão te dá o Senhor, teu Deus, não deixarás nelas alma viva.
17 Instead, you must lay them under the curse of destruction: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites,Hivites and Jebusites, as Yahweh your God has commanded,	17 Segundo a ordem do Senhor, teu Deus, votarás ao interdito os hiteus, os amorreus, os cananeus, os ferezeus, os heveus e os jebuseus,
18 so that they may not teach you to do al the detestable things which they do to honour their gods: indoing these, you would sin against Yahweh your God.	18 para que não suceda que eles vos ensinem a imitar as abominações que praticam em honra de seus deuses, e venhais a pecar contra o Senhor, vosso Deus.
19 'If, when attacking a town, you have to besiege it for a long time before you capture it, you must notdestroy its trees by taking the axe to them: eat their fruit but do not cut them down. Is the tree in the fieldshuman, that you should besiege it too?	19 Quando sitiares uma cidade durante longo tempo e tiveres de lutar para apoderar-te dela, não cortarás as árvores a golpe de machado; comerás os seus frutos, mas não derrubarás as árvores. A árvore do campo seria porventura um homem para que a ataques?
20 Any trees, however, which you know are not fruit trees, you may destroy and cut down and use tobuild siege-works against the hostile town until it fal s.'	20 Somente aquelas árvores que souberes não serem frutíferas poderás destruí-las e abatê-las para os trabalhos do cerco contra a cidade inimiga, ate que ela sucumba.
