Deuteronomy 20

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 'When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater thanyour own, you must not be afraid of them; Yahweh your God is with you, he who brought you out of Egypt.	1 Se andrai a far guerra a' tuoi nemici, e vedrai la loro cavalleria, e i cocchi, e la moltitudine delle schiere loro più grande di quella che hai tu, non ne avrai paura, perché teco è il Signore Dio tuo, che ti trasse dalla terra d'Egitto.
2 When you are about to join battle, the priest must come forward and address the people.	2 E quando sarà imminente la battaglia, il sacerdote starà alla testa dell'esercito, e cosi dirà al popolo:
3 He must say to them, "Listen, Israel: today you are about to join battle with your enemies. Do not befaint hearted. Let there be no fear or trembling or alarm as you face them.	3 Ascolta, Israele: Voi oggi venite alle mani contro i vostri nemici; non si turbi il vostro cuore, non temete, non date indietro, non ne abbiate paura:
4 Yahweh your God is marching with you, to fight your enemies for you and make you victorious."	4 Perocché il Signore Dio vostro è in mezzo a voi, ed ei combatterà per voi contro i vostri nemici per trarvi da ogni pericolo.
5 'The scribes wil then address the people, as follows: "Has anyone built a new house and not yetdedicated it? Let him go home, in case he dies in battle and someone else performs the dedication.	5 Oltre a ciò i capitani schiera per ischiera udendoli tutte le milizie grideranno: V’ha egli alcuno, che abbia fabbricata una casa, e non l'abbia rinnovata? Se ne vada, e torni a casa sua, perché non si muoia egli nella zuffa, e un altro la rinnovi.
6 "Has anyone planted a vineyard and not yet enjoyed its fruit? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else enjoys its fruit.	6 V’ha egli chi abbia piantato una vigna, e non abbia ancora potuto accomunarla, sicché di essa possa mangiar chicchessia? Vada, e torni a casa sua, affinché egli per disgrazia non si muoia nella battaglia, e un altro debba fare quel che a lui si apparteneva.
7 "Has anyone contracted to marry a girl and not yet married her? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else marries her."	7 V'ha egli chi abbia fatti gli sponsali con una donna, e non l’abbia ancora menata a casa? Vada, e torni a casa sua affinché per disgrazia non si muoia egli nella battaglia, e un altro la sposi.
8 'Final y, the scribes wil say to the people: "Is anyone frightened or faint hearted? Let him go home, incase he makes his brothers faint hearted too!"	8 Dette queste cose continueranno, e diranno al popolo: V'ha egli alcuno pauroso, e di poco cuore? Vada, e torni a casa sua, affinché non comunichi la sua paura ai cuori de' suoi fratelli, come egli è smarrito per la paura.
9 'Then, when the scribes have finished speaking to the people, commanders wil be appointed to leadthem.	9 Quando poi i capitani dell'esercito avran fatto silenzio, ciascheduno ordinerà le sue schiere per la battaglia.
10 'When you advance on a town to attack it, first offer it peace-terms.	10 Allorché ti appresserai ad espugnare una città, le offerirai prima la pace.
11 If it accepts these and opens its gates to you, all the people inside wil owe you forced labour andwork for you.	11 Se l’accetterà, e ti aprirà le porte, tutto il popolo, che sarà dentro, sarà salvo, e sarà soggetto a te, e tuo tributario.
12 But if it refuses peace and gives battle, you must besiege it.	12 Ma se non vorrà venire a patti, e comincerà ad agire ostilmente, tu vi porrai l’assedio:
13 Yahweh your God having handed it over to you, you wil put the whole male population to the sword.	13 E quando il Signore Dio tuo l'avrà data a te nelle mani, metterai a fil di spada tutti i maschi, che vi son dentro,
14 But the women, children, livestock and whatever the town contains by way of spoil, you may take foryourselves as booty. You will feed on the spoils of the enemies whom Yahweh your God has handed over toyou.	14 Lasciando le donne, e i fanciulli, e le bestie, e tutte le altre cose, che sono in quella città. Tutta la preda la distribuirai ai soldati, e mangerai delle spoglie dei tuoi nemici donate a te dal Signore Dio tuo.
15 'That is how you will treat towns far away and not belonging to the nations near you.	15 Così farai verso tutte quelle città, le quali sono molto rimote da te, e non sono del numero di quelle, le quali tu sei per avere in tuo dominio.
16 But as regards the towns of those peoples whom Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage,you must not spare the life of any living thing.	16 Ma di queste città, le quali ti saranno date, tu non permetterai che veruno rimanga vivo,
17 Instead, you must lay them under the curse of destruction: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites,Hivites and Jebusites, as Yahweh your God has commanded,	17 Ma li metterai a fil di spada, vale a dire gli Hetei, e gli Amorrhaei, e i Cananei, e i Pherezei, e gli Hevei, e gli Jebusei, come il Signore Dio tuo ti ha comandato:
18 so that they may not teach you to do al the detestable things which they do to honour their gods: indoing these, you would sin against Yahweh your God.	18 Affinché non v’insegnino a fare tutte le abbominazioni, che eglino hanno praticate verso de' loro dei, onde voi offendiate il Signore Dio vostro.
19 'If, when attacking a town, you have to besiege it for a long time before you capture it, you must notdestroy its trees by taking the axe to them: eat their fruit but do not cut them down. Is the tree in the fieldshuman, that you should besiege it too?	19 Quando tu starai lungamente all’assedio di qualche città, e l’avrai circondata di macchine per espugnarla, non troncherai le piante, che danno frutto da mangiare, né devasterai all’intorno il paese a colpi di scure, perché non gli alberi, ma gli uomini possono accrescere il numero di coloro che a te fanno guerra.
20 Any trees, however, which you know are not fruit trees, you may destroy and cut down and use tobuild siege-works against the hostile town until it fal s.'	20 Ma se vi sorto piante non fruttifere, ma salvatiche, e atte agli altri bisogni della vita, tagliale, e fanne delle macchine, fino a tanto che t'impadronisca della città nemica.
