Deuteronomy 20

NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 'When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater thanyour own, you must not be afraid of them; Yahweh your God is with you, he who brought you out of Egypt.	1 QUANDO tu uscirai in guerra contro a’ tuoi nemici, e vedrai cavalli e carri, e gente in maggior numero di te, non temer però di loro; conciossiachè il Signore Iddio tuo, che t’ha tratto fuor del paese di Egitto, sia teco.
2 When you are about to join battle, the priest must come forward and address the people.	2 E quando vi appresserete per dar la battaglia, facciasi il Sacerdote innanzi, e parli al popolo,
3 He must say to them, "Listen, Israel: today you are about to join battle with your enemies. Do not befaint hearted. Let there be no fear or trembling or alarm as you face them.	3 e dicagli: Ascolta, Israele: Voi siete oggi vicini a venire a battaglia co’ vostri nemici; il cuor vostro non s’invilisca; non temiate, e non vi smarrite, nè vi spaventate per tema di loro;
4 Yahweh your God is marching with you, to fight your enemies for you and make you victorious."	4 perciocchè il Signore Iddio vostro è quel che cammina con voi, per combatter per voi contro a’ vostri nemici, per salvarvi.
5 'The scribes wil then address the people, as follows: "Has anyone built a new house and not yetdedicated it? Let him go home, in case he dies in battle and someone else performs the dedication.	5 Parlino eziandio gli Ufficiali al popolo, dicendo: Chi è colui che abbia edificata una casa nuova, e non l’abbia ancora dedicata? vada, e ritorni a casa sua, che talora egli non muoia nella battaglia, e un altro dedichi la sua casa.
6 "Has anyone planted a vineyard and not yet enjoyed its fruit? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else enjoys its fruit.	6 E chi è colui che abbia piantata una vigna, e non l’abbia ancora cominciata a godere in uso comune? vada, e ritorni a casa sua, che talora egli non muoia nella battaglia, e un altro cominci a goderla.
7 "Has anyone contracted to marry a girl and not yet married her? Let him go home, in case he dies inbattle and someone else marries her."	7 E chi è colui che abbia sposata una moglie, e non l’abbia ancora menata? vada, e ritorni a casa sua, che talora egli non muoia nella battaglia, e un altro la meni.
8 'Final y, the scribes wil say to the people: "Is anyone frightened or faint hearted? Let him go home, incase he makes his brothers faint hearted too!"	8 Gli Ufficiali parlino ancora al popolo, e dicano: Chi è timido, e di poco cuore? vada e ritorni a casa sua, acciocchè i suoi fratelli non s’inviliscano di cuore come esso.
9 'Then, when the scribes have finished speaking to the people, commanders wil be appointed to leadthem.	9 E, dopo che gli Ufficiali avranno finito di parlare al popolo, ordinino i Capi delle schiere in capo del popolo
10 'When you advance on a town to attack it, first offer it peace-terms.	10 Quando tu ti accosterai a una città per combatterla, chiamala prima a pace.
11 If it accepts these and opens its gates to you, all the people inside wil owe you forced labour andwork for you.	11 E se ti dà risposta di pace, e ti apre le porte, tutto il popolo che in essa si troverà, siati tributario e soggetto.
12 But if it refuses peace and gives battle, you must besiege it.	12 Ma, s’ella non fa pace teco, anzi guerreggia contro a te, assediala;
13 Yahweh your God having handed it over to you, you wil put the whole male population to the sword.	13 e il Signore Iddio tuo te la darà nelle mani; allora metti a fil di spada tutti i maschi.
14 But the women, children, livestock and whatever the town contains by way of spoil, you may take foryourselves as booty. You will feed on the spoils of the enemies whom Yahweh your God has handed over toyou.	14 Predati sol le femmine, e i piccoli fanciulli, e il bestiame, e tutto quello che sarà nella città, tutte le spoglie di essa; e mangia della preda de’ tuoi nemici che il Signore Iddio tuo ti avrà data.
15 'That is how you will treat towns far away and not belonging to the nations near you.	15 Fai così a tutte le città che saranno molto lontane da te, che non saranno delle città di queste genti.
16 But as regards the towns of those peoples whom Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage,you must not spare the life of any living thing.	16 Ma delle città di questi popoli, le quali il Signore Iddio tuo ti dà per eredità, non iscampar la vita ad alcun’anima vivente;
17 Instead, you must lay them under the curse of destruction: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites,Hivites and Jebusites, as Yahweh your God has commanded,	17 anzi del tutto distruggi que’ popoli al modo dell’interdetto; gli Hittei, e gli Amorrei, e i Cananei, e i Ferizzei, e gli Hivvei, e i Gebusei; come il Signore Iddio tuo ti ha comandato;
18 so that they may not teach you to do al the detestable things which they do to honour their gods: indoing these, you would sin against Yahweh your God.	18 acciocchè non v’insegnino a far secondo tutte le loro abbominazioni che hanno usate inverso i loro iddii; e che voi non pecchiate contro al Signore Iddio vostro.
19 'If, when attacking a town, you have to besiege it for a long time before you capture it, you must notdestroy its trees by taking the axe to them: eat their fruit but do not cut them down. Is the tree in the fieldshuman, that you should besiege it too?	19 Quando tu terrai l’assedio a una città lungo tempo, combattendola per pigliarla, non guastar gli alberi di essa, avventando la scure contro a essi; perciocchè d’essi potrai mangiare, e però non tagliarli; perciocchè è forse l’albero della campagna un uomo, per entrar dentro alla fortezza, fuggendo d’innanzi a te?
20 Any trees, however, which you know are not fruit trees, you may destroy and cut down and use tobuild siege-works against the hostile town until it fal s.'	20 Sol potrai guastare, e tagliar gli alberi che tu conoscerai non essere alberi da mangiare; e ne potrai fabbricar ciò che sarà necessario all’assedio della città che guerreggerà contro a te, fin ch’ella caggia
