NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
It was just about this time that some people arrived and told him about the Galileans whose bloodPilate had mingled with that of their sacrifices. At this he said to them,1 Aderant autem quidam ipso in tempore nuntiantes illi de Galilaeis, quorum sanguinem Pilatus miscuit cum sacrificiis eorum.
'Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than any others, that this should havehappened to them?2 Et respondens dixitillis: “ Putatis quod hi Galilaei prae omnibus Galilaeis peccatores fuerunt, quia talia passi sunt?
They were not, I tel you. No; but unless you repent you wil al perish as they did.3 Non, dico vobis, sed, nisi paenitentiam egeritis, omnessimiliter peribitis.
Or those eighteen on whom the tower at Siloam fel , kil ing them al ? Do you suppose that they weremore guilty than al the other people living in Jerusalem?4 Vel illi decem et octo, supra quos cecidit turris inSiloam et occidit eos, putatis quia et ipsi debitores fuerunt praeter omneshomines habitantes in Ierusalem?
They were not, I tel you. No; but unless you repent you wil al perish as they did.'5 Non, dico vobis, sed, si non paenitentiamegeritis, omnes similiter peribitis ”.
He told this parable, 'A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on itbut found none.6 Dicebat autem hanc similitudinem: “ Arborem fici habebat quidam plantatam invinea sua et venit quaerens fructum in illa et non invenit.
He said to his vinedresser, "For three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree andfinding none. Cut it down: why should it be taking up the ground?"7 Dixit autem adcultorem vineae: “Ecce anni tres sunt, ex quo venio quaerens fructum inficulnea hac et non invenio. Succide ergo illam. Ut quid etiam terram evacuat?”.
"Sir," the man replied, "leave it one more year and give me time to dig round it and manure it:8 At ille respondens dicit illi: “Domine, dimitte illam et hoc anno, usque dumfodiam circa illam et mittam stercora,
it may bear fruit next year; if not, then you can cut it down." '9 et si quidem fecerit fructum infuturum; sin autem succides eam” ”.
One Sabbath day he was teaching in one of the synagogues,10 Erat autem docens in una synagogarum sabbatis.
and there before him was a woman who for eighteen years had been possessed by a spirit thatcrippled her; she was bent double and quite unable to stand upright.11 Et ecce mulier, quaehabebat spiritum infirmitatis annis decem et octo et erat inclinata nec omninopoterat sursum respicere.
When Jesus saw her he cal ed her over and said, 'Woman, you are freed from your disability,'12 Quam cum vidisset Iesus, vocavit et ait illi: “Mulier, dimissa es ab infirmitate tua ”,
and he laid his hands on her. And at once she straightened up, and she glorified God.13 et imposuit illi manus; etconfestim erecta est et glorificabat Deum.
But the president of the synagogue was indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, and headdressed all those present saying, 'There are six days when work is to be done. Come and be healed on one ofthose days and not on the Sabbath.'14 Respondens autem archisynagogus, indignans quia sabbato curasset Iesus, dicebat turbae: “ Sex dies sunt, in quibus oportet operari; in his ergo veniteet curamini et non in die sabbati ”.
But the Lord answered him and said, 'Hypocrites! Is there one of you who does not untie his ox or hisdonkey from the manger on the Sabbath and take it out for watering?15 Respondit autem ad illum Dominus etdixit: “ Hypocritae, unusquisque vestrum sabbato non solvit bovem suum autasinum a praesepio et ducit adaquare?
And this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has held bound these eighteen years -- was itnot right to untie this bond on the Sabbath day?'16 Hanc autem filiam Abrahae, quamalligavit Satanas ecce decem et octo annis, non oportuit solvi a vinculo istodie sabbati? ”.
When he said this, all his adversaries were covered with confusion, and al the people were overjoyedat al the wonders he worked.17 Et cum haec diceret, erubescebant omnes adversarii eius, etomnis populus gaudebat in universis, quae gloriose fiebant ab eo.
He went on to say, 'What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it with?18 Dicebat ergo: “ Cui simile est regnum Dei, et cui simile existimabo illud?
It is like a mustard seed which a man took and threw into his garden: it grew and became a tree, andthe birds of the air sheltered in its branches.'19 Simile est grano sinapis, quod acceptum homo misit in hortum suum, et crevitet factum est in arborem, et volucres caeli requieverunt in ramis eius ”.
Again he said, 'What shall I compare the kingdom of God with?20 Et iterum dixit: “ Cui simile aestimabo regnum Dei?
It is like the yeast a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour til it was leavened althrough.'21 Simile est fermento, quod acceptum mulier abscondit in farinae sata tria, donec fermentaretur totum”.
Through towns and vil ages he went teaching, making his way to Jerusalem.22 Et ibat per civitates et castella docens et iter faciens in Hierosolymam.
Someone said to him, 'Sir, wil there be only a few saved?' He said to them,23 Ait autem illi quidam: “ Domine, pauci sunt, qui salvantur? ”. Ipse autemdixit ad illos:
'Try your hardest to enter by the narrow door, because, I tell you, many wil try to enter and wil notsucceed.24 “ Contendite intrare per angustam portam, quia multi, dicovobis, quaerent intrare et non poterunt.
'Once the master of the house has got up and locked the door, you may find yourself standingoutside knocking on the door, saying, "Lord, open to us," but he will answer, "I do not know where you comefrom."25 Cum autem surrexerit pater familiaset clauserit ostium, et incipietis foris stare et pulsare ostium dicentes: “Domine, aperi nobis”; et respondens dicet vobis: “Nescio vos unde sitis”.
Then you wil start saying, "We once ate and drank in your company; you taught in our streets,"26 Tuncincipietis dicere: “Manducavimus coram te et bibimus, et in plateis nostrisdocuisti”;
but he wil reply, "I do not know where you come from; away from me, al evil doers!"27 et dicet loquens vobis: “Nescio vos unde sitis; discedite ame, omnes operarii iniquitatis”.
'Then there wil be weeping and grinding of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob andal the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrown out.28 Ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium, cumvideritis Abraham et Isaac et Iacob et omnes prophetas in regno Dei, vos autemexpelli foras.
And people from east and west, from north and south, wil come and sit down at the feast in thekingdom of God.29 Et venient ab oriente et occidente et aquilone et austro etaccumbent in regno Dei.
'Look, there are those now last who will be first, and those now first who wil be last.'30 Et ecce sunt novissimi, qui erunt primi, et suntprimi, qui erunt novissimi ”.
Just at this time some Pharisees came up. 'Go away,' they said. 'Leave this place, because Herodmeans to kill you.'31 In ipsa hora accesserunt quidam pharisaeorum dicentes illi: “ Exi et vadehinc, quia Herodes vult te occidere ”.
He replied, 'You may go and give that fox this message: Look! Today and tomorrow I drive out devilsand heal, and on the third day I attain my end.32 Et ait illis: “ Ite, dicite vulpiilli: “Ecce eicio daemonia et sanitates perficio hodie et cras et tertiaconsummor.
But for today and tomorrow and the next day I must go on, since it would not be right for a prophet todie outside Jerusalem.33 Verumtamen oportet me hodie et cras et sequenti ambulare, quia noncapit prophetam perire extra Ierusalem”.
'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kil the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How oftenhave I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you refused!34 Ierusalem, Ierusalem, quae occidis prophetas et lapidas eos, qui missi suntad te, quotiens volui congregare filios tuos, quemadmodum avis nidum suum subpinnis, et noluistis.
Look! Your house wil be left to you. Yes, I promise you, you shal not see me till the time comeswhen you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord!'35 Ecce relinquitur vobis domus vestra. Dico autem vobis:Non videbitis me, donec veniat cum dicetis: “Benedictus, qui venit in nomineDomini” ”.
