After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him in pairs, to all thetowns and places he himself would be visiting.1 Then, after these things, the Lord also designated another seventy-two. And he sent them in pairs before his face, into every city and place where he was to arrive.
And he said to them, 'The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest tosend labourers to do his harvesting.2 And he said to them: “Certainly the harvest is great, but the workers are few. Therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers into his harvest.
Start off now, but look, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.3 Go forth. Behold, I send you out like lambs among wolves.
Take no purse with you, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road.4 Do not choose to carry a purse, nor provisions, nor shoes; and you shall greet no one along the way.
Whatever house you enter, let your first words be, "Peace to this house!"5 Into whatever house you will have entered, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’
And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you.6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you.
Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves hiswages; do not move from house to house.7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking the things that are with them. For the worker is worthy of his pay. Do not choose to pass from house to house.
Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is put before you.8 And into whatever city you have entered and they have received you, eat what they set before you.
Cure those in it who are sick, and say, "The kingdom of God is very near to you."9 And cure the sick who are in that place, and proclaim to them, ‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.’
But whenever you enter a town and they do not make you welcome, go out into its streets and say,10 But into whatever city you have entered and they have not received you, going out into its main streets, say:
"We wipe off the very dust of your town that clings to our feet, and leave it with you. Yet be sure ofthis: the kingdom of God is very near."11 ‘Even the dust which clings to us from your city, we wipe away against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has drawn near.’
I tel you, on the great Day it wil be more bearable for Sodom than for that town.12 I say to you, that in that day, Sodom will be forgiven more than that city will be.
'Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done inTyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.13 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that have been wrought in you, had been wrought in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in haircloth and ashes.
And still, it wil be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the Judgement than for you.14 Yet truly, Tyre and Sidon will be forgiven more in the judgment than you will be.
And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be raised high as heaven? You shal be flung down tohell.15 And as for you, Capernaum, who would be exalted even up to Heaven: you shall be submerged into Hell.
'Anyone who listens to you listens to me; anyone who rejects you rejects me, and those who rejectme reject the one who sent me.'16 Whoever hears you, hears me. And whoever despises you, despises me. And whoever despises me, despises him who sent me.”
The seventy-two came back rejoicing. 'Lord,' they said, 'even the devils submit to us when we useyour name.'17 Then the seventy-two returned with gladness, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us, in your name.”
He said to them, 'I watched Satan fall like lightning from heaven.18 And he said to them: “I was watching as Satan fell like lightning from heaven.
Look, I have given you power to tread down serpents and scorpions and the whole strength of theenemy; nothing shal ever hurt you.19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the powers of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.
Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you; rejoice instead that your names are written inheaven.'20 Yet truly, do not choose to rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Just at this time, fil ed with joy by the Holy Spirit, he said, 'I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and ofearth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to little children. Yes, Father, for that is what it has pleased you to do.21 In the same hour, he exulted in the Holy Spirit, and he said: “I confess to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the prudent, and have revealed them to little ones. It is so, Father, because this way was pleasing before you.
Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except theFather, and who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.'22 All things have been delivered to me by my Father. And no one knows who the Son is, except the Father, and who the Father is, except the Son, and those to whom the Son has chosen to reveal him.”
Then turning to his disciples he spoke to them by themselves, 'Blessed are the eyes that see whatyou see,23 And turning to his disciples, he said: “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
for I tel you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hearwhat you hear, and never heard it.'24 For I say to you, that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things that you see, and they did not see them, and to hear the things that you hear, and they did not hear them.”
And now a lawyer stood up and, to test him, asked, 'Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'25 And behold, a certain expert in the law rose up, testing him and saying, “Teacher, what must I do to possess eternal life?”
He said to him, 'What is written in the Law? What is your reading of it?'26 But he said to him: “What is written in the law? How do you read it?”
He replied, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, with all yourstrength, and with al your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.'27 In response, he said: “You shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart, and from your whole soul, and from all your strength, and from all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
Jesus said to him, 'You have answered right, do this and life is yours.'28 And he said to him: “You have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live.”
But the man was anxious to justify himself and said to Jesus, 'And who is my neighbour?'29 But since he wanted to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
In answer Jesus said, 'A man was once on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fel into thehands of bandits; they stripped him, beat him and then made off, leaving him half dead.30 Then Jesus, taking this up, said: “A certain man descended from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he happened upon robbers, who now also plundered him. And inflicting him with wounds, they went away, leaving him behind, half-alive.
Now a priest happened to be travel ing down the same road, but when he saw the man, he passed byon the other side.31 And it happened that a certain priest was descending along the same way. And seeing him, he passed by.
In the same way a Levite who came to the place saw him, and passed by on the other side.32 And similarly a Levite, when he was near the place, also saw him, and he passed by.
But a Samaritan travel er who came on him was moved with compassion when he saw him.33 But a certain Samaritan, being on a journey, came near him. And seeing him, he was moved by mercy.
He went up to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He then lifted him ontohis own mount and took him to an inn and looked after him.34 And approaching him, he bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. And setting him on his pack animal, he brought him to an inn, and he took care of him.
Next day, he took out two denari and handed them to the innkeeper and said, "Look after him, andon my way back I wil make good any extra expense you have."35 And the next day, he took out two denarii, and he gave them to the proprietor, and he said: ‘Take care of him. And whatever extra you will have spent, I will repay to you at my return.’
Which of these three, do you think, proved himself a neighbour to the man who fel into the bandits'hands?'36 Which of these three, does it seem to you, was a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?”
He replied, 'The one who showed pity towards him.' Jesus said to him, 'Go, and do the sameyourself.'37 Then he said, “The one who acted with mercy toward him.” And Jesus said to him, “Go, and act similarly.”
In the course of their journey he came to a vil age, and a woman named Martha welcomed him intoher house.38 Now it happened that, while they were traveling, he entered into a certain town. And a certain woman, named Martha, received him into her home.
She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking.39 And she had a sister, named Mary, who, while sitting beside the Lord’s feet, was listening to his word.
Now Martha, who was distracted with all the serving, came to him and said, 'Lord, do you not carethat my sister is leaving me to do the serving al by myself? Please tel her to help me.'40 Now Martha was continually busying herself with serving. And she stood still and said: “Lord, is it not a concern to you that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore, speak to her, so that she may help me.”
But the Lord answered, 'Martha, Martha,' he said, 'you worry and fret about so many things,41 And the Lord responded by saying to her: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled over many things.
and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part, and it is not to betaken from her.'42 And yet only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the best portion, and it shall not be taken away from her.”
