NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him in pairs, to all thetowns and places he himself would be visiting.1 Post haec autem designavit Dominus alios septuaginta duos et misit illosbinos ante faciem suam in omnem civitatem et locum, quo erat ipse venturus.
And he said to them, 'The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest tosend labourers to do his harvesting.2 Etdicebat illis: “ Messis quidem multa, operarii autem pauci; rogate ergoDominum messis, ut mittat operarios in messem suam.
Start off now, but look, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.3 Ite; ecce ego mitto vossicut agnos inter lupos.
Take no purse with you, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road.4 Nolite portare sacculum neque peram neque calceamentaet neminem per viam salutaveritis.
Whatever house you enter, let your first words be, "Peace to this house!"5 In quamcumque domum intraveritis, primumdicite: “Pax huic domui”.
And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you.6 Et si ibi fuerit filius pacis, requiescet superillam pax vestra; sin autem, ad vos revertetur.
Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves hiswages; do not move from house to house.7 In eadem autem domo maneteedentes et bibentes, quae apud illos sunt: dignus enim est operarius mercedesua. Nolite transire de domo in domum.
Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is put before you.8 Et in quamcumque civitatemintraveritis, et susceperint vos, manducate, quae apponuntur vobis,
Cure those in it who are sick, and say, "The kingdom of God is very near to you."9 et curateinfirmos, qui in illa sunt, et dicite illis: “Appropinquavit in vos regnum Dei”.
But whenever you enter a town and they do not make you welcome, go out into its streets and say,10 In quamcumque civitatem intraveritis, et non receperint vos, exeuntes inplateas eius dicite:
"We wipe off the very dust of your town that clings to our feet, and leave it with you. Yet be sure ofthis: the kingdom of God is very near."11 “Etiam pulverem, qui adhaesit nobis ad pedes decivitate vestra, extergimus in vos; tamen hoc scitote, quia appropinquavitregnum Dei”.
I tel you, on the great Day it wil be more bearable for Sodom than for that town.12 Dico vobis quia Sodomis in die illa remissius erit quam illicivitati.
'Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done inTyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.13 Vae tibi, Chorazin! Vae tibi, Bethsaida! Quia si in Tyro et Sidonefactae fuissent virtutes, quae in vobis factae sunt, olim in cilicio et cineresedentes paeniterent.
And still, it wil be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the Judgement than for you.14 Verumtamen Tyro et Sidoni remissius erit in iudicioquam vobis.
And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be raised high as heaven? You shal be flung down tohell.15 Et tu, Capharnaum, numquid usque in caelum exaltaberis? Usque ad infernumdemergeris!
'Anyone who listens to you listens to me; anyone who rejects you rejects me, and those who rejectme reject the one who sent me.'16 Qui vos audit, me audit; et, qui vos spernit, me spernit; qui autem mespernit, spernit eum, qui me misit ”.
The seventy-two came back rejoicing. 'Lord,' they said, 'even the devils submit to us when we useyour name.'17 Reversi sunt autem septuaginta duo cum gaudio dicentes: “ Domine, etiamdaemonia subiciuntur nobis in nomine tuo! ”.
He said to them, 'I watched Satan fall like lightning from heaven.18 Et ait illis: “ VidebamSatanam sicut fulgur de caelo cadentem.
Look, I have given you power to tread down serpents and scorpions and the whole strength of theenemy; nothing shal ever hurt you.19 Ecce dedi vobis potestatem calcandisupra serpentes et scorpiones et supra omnem virtutem inimici; et nihil vobisnocebit.
Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you; rejoice instead that your names are written inheaven.'20 Verumtamen in hoc nolite gaudere, quia spiritus vobis subiciuntur;gaudete autem quod nomina vestra scripta sunt in caelis ”.
Just at this time, fil ed with joy by the Holy Spirit, he said, 'I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and ofearth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to little children. Yes, Father, for that is what it has pleased you to do.21 In ipsa hora exsultavit Spiritu Sancto et dixit: “ Confiteor tibi, Pater,Domine caeli et terrae, quod abscondisti haec a sapientibus et prudentibus etrevelasti ea parvulis; etiam, Pater, quia sic placuit ante te.
Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except theFather, and who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.'22 Omnia mihitradita sunt a Patre meo; et nemo scit qui sit Filius, nisi Pater, et qui sitPater, nisi Filius et cui voluerit Filius revelare ”.
Then turning to his disciples he spoke to them by themselves, 'Blessed are the eyes that see whatyou see,23 Et conversus ad discipulos seorsum dixit: “ Beati oculi, qui vident, quaevidetis.
for I tel you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hearwhat you hear, and never heard it.'24 Dico enim vobis: Multi prophetae et reges voluerunt videre, quae vosvidetis, et non viderunt, et audire, quae auditis, et non audierunt ”.
And now a lawyer stood up and, to test him, asked, 'Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'25 Et ecce quidam legis peritus surrexit tentans illum dicens: “ Magister, quid faciendo vitam aeternam possidebo? ”.
He said to him, 'What is written in the Law? What is your reading of it?'26 At ille dixit ad eum: “ InLege quid scriptum est? Quomodo legis? ”.
He replied, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, with all yourstrength, and with al your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.'27 Ille autem respondens dixit: “Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo et ex tota anima tua et ex omnibusviribus tuis et ex omni mente tua et proximum tuum sicut teipsum ”.
Jesus said to him, 'You have answered right, do this and life is yours.'28 Dixitque illi: “ Recte respondisti; hoc fac et vives ”.
But the man was anxious to justify himself and said to Jesus, 'And who is my neighbour?'29 Ille autem, volens iustificare seipsum, dixit ad Iesum: “ Et quis est meus proximus? ”.
In answer Jesus said, 'A man was once on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fel into thehands of bandits; they stripped him, beat him and then made off, leaving him half dead.30 Suscipiens autem Iesus dixit: “ Homo quidam descendebat ab Ierusalem inIericho et incidit in latrones, qui etiam despoliaverunt eum et, plagisimpositis, abierunt, semivivo relicto.
Now a priest happened to be travel ing down the same road, but when he saw the man, he passed byon the other side.31 Accidit autem, ut sacerdos quidamdescenderet eadem via et, viso illo, praeterivit;
In the same way a Levite who came to the place saw him, and passed by on the other side.32 similiter et Levita, cumesset secus locum et videret eum, pertransiit.
But a Samaritan travel er who came on him was moved with compassion when he saw him.33 Samaritanus autem quidam iterfaciens, venit secus eum et videns eum misericordia motus est,
He went up to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He then lifted him ontohis own mount and took him to an inn and looked after him.34 et appropiansalligavit vulnera eius infundens oleum et vinum; et imponens illum in iumentumsuum duxit in stabulum et curam eius egit.
Next day, he took out two denari and handed them to the innkeeper and said, "Look after him, andon my way back I wil make good any extra expense you have."35 Et altera die protulit duosdenarios et dedit stabulario et ait: “Curam illius habe, et, quodcumquesupererogaveris, ego, cum rediero, reddam tibi”.
Which of these three, do you think, proved himself a neighbour to the man who fel into the bandits'hands?'36 Quis horum trium videturtibi proximus fuisse illi, qui incidit in latrones? ”.
He replied, 'The one who showed pity towards him.' Jesus said to him, 'Go, and do the sameyourself.'37 At ille dixit: “Qui fecit misericordiam in illum ”. Et ait illi Iesus: “ Vade et tu facsimiliter ”.
In the course of their journey he came to a vil age, and a woman named Martha welcomed him intoher house.38 Cum autem irent, ipse intravit in quoddam castellum, et mulier quaedam Marthanomine excepit illum.
She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking.39 Et huic erat soror nomine Maria, quae etiam sedenssecus pedes Domini audiebat verbum illius.
Now Martha, who was distracted with all the serving, came to him and said, 'Lord, do you not carethat my sister is leaving me to do the serving al by myself? Please tel her to help me.'40 Martha autem satagebat circafrequens ministerium; quae stetit et ait: “ Domine, non est tibi curae quodsoror mea reliquit me solam ministrare? Dic ergo illi, ut me adiuvet ”.
But the Lord answered, 'Martha, Martha,' he said, 'you worry and fret about so many things,41 Etrespondens dixit illi Dominus: “ Martha, Martha, sollicita es et turbaris ergaplurima,
and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part, and it is not to betaken from her.'42 porro unum est necessarium; Maria enim optimam partem elegit, quaenon auferetur ab ea ”.
