1 The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered round him,1 Et conveniunt ad eum pharisæi, et quidam de scribis, venientes ab Jerosolymis.
2 and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washingthem.2 Et cum vidissent quosdam ex discipulis ejus communibus manibus, id est non lotis, manducare panes, vituperaverunt.
3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, keep the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing theirarms as far as the elbow;3 Pharisæi enim, et omnes Judæi, nisi crebro laverint manus, non manducant, tenentes traditionem seniorum :
4 and on returning from the market place they never eat without first sprinkling themselves. There arealso many other observances which have been handed down to them to keep, concerning the washing of cupsand pots and bronze dishes.4 et a foro nisi baptizentur, non comedunt : et alia multa sunt, quæ tradita sunt illis servare, baptismata calicum, et urceorum, et æramentorum, et lectorum :
5 So the Pharisees and scribes asked him, 'Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the eldersbut eat their food with unclean hands?'5 et interrogabant eum pharisæi et scribæ : Quare discipuli tui non ambulant juxta traditionem seniorum, sed communibus manibus manducant panem ?
6 He answered, 'How rightly Isaiah prophesied about you hypocrites in the passage of scripture: Thispeople honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me.6 At ille respondens, dixit eis : Bene prophetavit Isaias de vobis hypocritis, sicut scriptum est : Populus hic labiis me honorat,
cor autem eorum longe est a me :
7 Their reverence of me is worthless; the lessons they teach are nothing but human commandments.7 in vanum autem me colunt,
docentes doctrinas, et præcepta hominum.
8 You put aside the commandment of God to observe human traditions.'8 Relinquentes enim mandatum Dei, tenetis traditionem hominum, baptismata urceorum et calicum : et alia similia his facitis multa.
9 And he said to them, 'How ingeniously you get round the commandment of God in order to preserveyour own tradition!9 Et dicebat illis : Bene irritum facitis præceptum Dei, ut traditionem vestram servetis.
10 For Moses said: Honour your father and your mother, and, Anyone who curses father or mother mustbe put to death.10 Moyses enim dixit : Honora patrem tuum, et matrem tuam. Et : Qui maledixerit patri, vel matri, morte moriatur.
11 But you say, "If a man says to his father or mother: Anything I have that I might have used to help youis Korban (that is, dedicated to God),"11 Vos autem dicitis : Si dixerit homo patri, aut matri, Corban (quod est donum) quodcumque ex me, tibi profuerit :
12 then he is forbidden from that moment to do anything for his father or mother.12 et ultra non dimittitis eum quidquam facere patri suo, aut matri,
13 In this way you make God's word ineffective for the sake of your tradition which you have handeddown. And you do many other things like this.'13 rescindentes verbum Dei per traditionem vestram, quam tradidistis : et similia hujusmodi multa facitis.
14 He called the people to him again and said, 'Listen to me, al of you, and understand.14 Et advocans iterum turbam, dicebat illis : Audite me omnes, et intelligite.
15 Nothing that goes into someone from outside can make that person unclean; it is the things that comeout of someone that make that person unclean.15 Nihil est extra hominem introiens in eum, quod possit eum coinquinare, sed quæ de homine procedunt illa sunt quæ communicant hominem.
16 Anyone who has ears for listening should listen!'16 Si quis habet aures audiendi, audiat.
17 When he had gone into the house, away from the crowd, his disciples questioned him about theparable.17 Et cum introisset in domum a turba, interrogabant eum discipuli ejus parabolam.
18 He said to them, 'Even you -- don't you understand? Can't you see that nothing that goes intosomeone from outside can make that person unclean,18 Et ait illis : Sic et vos imprudentes estis ? Non intelligitis quia omne extrinsecus introiens in hominem, non potest eum communicare :
19 because it goes not into the heart but into the stomach and passes into the sewer?' (Thus hepronounced al foods clean.)19 quia non intrat in cor ejus, sed in ventrum vadit, et in secessum exit, purgans omnes escas ?
20 And he went on, 'It is what comes out of someone that makes that person unclean.20 Dicebat autem, quoniam quæ de homine exeunt, illa communicant hominem.
21 For it is from within, from the heart, that evil intentions emerge: fornication, theft, murder,21 Ab intus enim de corde hominum malæ cogitationes procedunt, adulteria, fornicationes, homicidia,
22 adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, pride, fol y.22 furta, avaritiæ, nequitiæ, dolus, impudicitiæ, oculus malus, blasphemia, superbia, stultitia.
23 Al these evil things come from within and make a person unclean.'23 Omnia hæc mala ab intus procedunt, et communicant hominem.
24 He left that place and set out for the territory of Tyre. There he went into a house and did not wantanyone to know he was there; but he could not pass unrecognised.24 Et inde surgens abiit in fines Tyri et Sidonis : et ingressus domum, neminem voluit scire, et non potuit latere.
25 At once a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him and came and fel at hisfeet.25 Mulier enim statim ut audivit de eo, cujus filia habebat spiritum immundum, intravit, et procidit ad pedes ejus.
26 Now this woman was a gentile, by birth a Syro-Phoenician, and she begged him to drive the devil outof her daughter.26 Erat enim mulier gentilis, Syrophœnissa genere. Et rogabat eum ut dæmonium ejiceret de filia ejus.
27 And he said to her, 'The children should be fed first, because it is not fair to take the children's foodand throw it to little dogs.'27 Qui dixit illi : Sine prius saturari filios : non est enim bonum sumere panem filiorum, et mittere canibus.
28 But she spoke up, 'Ah yes, sir,' she replied, 'but little dogs under the table eat the scraps from thechildren.'28 At illa respondit, et dixit illi : Utique Domine, nam et catelli comedunt sub mensa de micis puerorum.
29 And he said to her, 'For saying this you may go home happy; the devil has gone out of your daughter.'29 Et ait illi : Propter hunc sermonem vade : exiit dæmonium a filia tua.
30 So she went off home and found the child lying on the bed and the devil gone.30 Et cum abiisset domum suam, invenit puellam jacentem supra lectum, et dæmonium exiisse.
31 Returning from the territory of Tyre, he went by way of Sidon towards the Lake of Galilee, right throughthe Decapolis territory.31 Et iterum exiens de finibus Tyri, venit per Sidonem ad mare Galilææ inter medios fines Decapoleos.
32 And they brought him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they asked him to lay hishand on him.32 Et adducunt ei surdum, et mutum, et deprecabantur eum, ut imponat illi manum.
33 He took him aside to be by themselves, away from the crowd, put his fingers into the man's ears andtouched his tongue with spittle.33 Et apprehendens eum de turba seorsum, misit digitos suos in auriculas ejus : et exspuens, tetigit linguam ejus :
34 Then looking up to heaven he sighed; and he said to him, 'Ephphatha,' that is, 'Be opened.'34 et suspiciens in cælum, ingemuit, et ait illi : Ephphetha, quod est, Adaperire.
35 And his ears were opened, and at once the impediment of his tongue was loosened and he spokeclearly.35 Et statim apertæ sunt aures ejus, et solutum est vinculum linguæ ejus, et loquebatur recte.
36 And Jesus ordered them to tel no one about it, but the more he insisted, the more widely theyproclaimed it.36 Et præcepit illis ne cui dicerent. Quanto autem eis præcipiebat, tanto magis plus prædicabant :
37 Their admiration was unbounded, and they said, 'Everything he does is good, he makes the deaf hearand the dumb speak.'37 et eo amplius admirabantur, dicentes : Bene omnia fecit : et surdos fecit audire, et mutos loqui.
