NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Seeing the crowds, he went onto the mountain. And when he was seated his disciples came to him.1 Videns autem turbas, ascendit in montem; et cum sedisset, ac cesserunt adeum discipuli eius;
Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them:2 et aperiens os suum docebat eos dicens:
How blessed are the poor in spirit: the kingdom of Heaven is theirs.3 “ Beati pauperes spiritu, quoniam ipsorum est regnum caelorum.
Blessed are the gentle: they shal have the earth as inheritance.4 Beati, qui lugent, quoniam ipsi consolabuntur.
Blessed are those who mourn: they shal be comforted.5 Beati mites, quoniam ipsi possidebunt terram.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for uprightness: they shal have their fil .6 Beati, qui esuriunt et sitiunt iustitiam, quoniam ipsi saturabuntur.
Blessed are the merciful: they shal have mercy shown them.7 Beati misericordes, quia ipsi misericordiam consequentur.
Blessed are the pure in heart: they shal see God.8 Beati mundo corde, quoniam ipsi Deum videbunt.
Blessed are the peacemakers: they shal be recognised as children of God.9 Beati pacifici, quoniam filii Dei vocabuntur.
Blessed are those who are persecuted in the cause of uprightness: the kingdom of Heaven is theirs.10 Beati, qui persecutionem patiuntur propter iustitiam, quoniam ipsorum estregnum caelorum.
'Blessed are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak al kinds of calumny againstyou falsely on my account.11 Beati estis cum maledixerint vobis et persecuti vos fuerint et dixerint omnemalum adversum vos, mentientes, propter me.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven; this is how they persecuted the prophetsbefore you.12 Gaudete et exsultate, quoniammerces vestra copiosa est in caelis; sic enim persecuti sunt prophetas, quifuerunt ante vos.
'You are salt for the earth. But if salt loses its taste, what can make it salty again? It is good fornothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled under people's feet.13 Vos estis sal terrae; quod si sal evanuerit, in quo salietur? Ad nihilumvalet ultra, nisi ut mittatur foras et conculcetur ab hominibus.
'You are light for the world. A city built on a hil -top cannot be hidden.14 Vos estis lux mundi. Non potest civitas abscondi supra montem posita;
No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone inthe house.15 neque accendunt lucernam et ponunt eam sub modio, sed super candelabrum, utluceat omnibus, qui in domo sunt.
In the same way your light must shine in people's sight, so that, seeing your good works, they maygive praise to your Father in heaven.16 Sic luceat lux vestra coram hominibus, utvideant vestra bona opera et glorificent Patrem vestrum, qui in caelis est.
'Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but tocomplete them.17 Nolite putare quoniam veni solvere Legem aut Prophetas; non veni solvere, sedadimplere.
In truth I tell you, till heaven and earth disappear, not one dot, not one little stroke, is to disappear fromthe Law until al its purpose is achieved.18 Amen quippe dico vobis: Donec transeat caelum et terra, iota unumaut unus apex non praeteribit a Lege, donec omnia fiant.
Therefore, anyone who infringes even one of the least of these commandments and teaches others todo the same wil be considered the least in the kingdom of Heaven; but the person who keeps them and teachesthem wil be considered great in the kingdom of Heaven.19 Qui ergo solveritunum de mandatis istis minimis et docuerit sic homines, minimus vocabitur inregno caelorum; qui autem fecerit et docuerit, hic magnus vocabitur in regnocaelorum.
'For I tell you, if your uprightness does not surpass that of the scribes and Pharisees, you wil neverget into the kingdom of Heaven.20 Dico enim vobis: Nisi abundaverit iustitia vestra plus quam scribarum etpharisaeorum, non intrabitis in regnum caelorum.
'You have heard how it was said to our ancestors, You shal not kil ; and if anyone does kil he mustanswer for it before the court.21 Audistis quia dictum est antiquis: “Non occides; qui autem occiderit, reuserit iudicio”.
But I say this to you, anyone who is angry with a brother wil answer for it before the court; anyone whocal s a brother "Fool" wil answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and anyone who cal s him "Traitor" wil answer for it in hel fire.22 Ego autem dico vobis: Omnis, qui irascitur fratri suo, reuserit iudicio; qui autem dixerit fratri suo: “Racha”, reus erit concilio; quiautem dixerit: “Fatue”, reus erit gehennae ignis.
So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother hassomething against you,23 Si ergo offeres munustuum ad altare, et ibi recordatus fueris quia frater tuus habet aliquid adversumte,
leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then comeback and present your offering.24 relinque ibi munus tuum ante altare et vade, prius, reconciliare fratrituo et tunc veniens offer munus tuum.
Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are stil on the way to the court with him, orhe may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you wil be thrown into prison.25 Esto consentiens adversario tuo cito,dum es in via cum eo, ne forte tradat te adversarius iudici, et iudex tradat teministro, et in carcerem mittaris.
In truth I tell you, you wil not get out til you have paid the last penny.26 Amen dico tibi: Non exies inde, donecreddas novissimum quadrantem.
'You have heard how it was said, You shall not commit adultery.27 Audistis quia dictum est: "Non moechaberis".
But I say this to you, if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her inhis heart.28 Ego autem dicovobis: Omnis, qui viderit mulierem ad concupiscendum eam, iam moechatus est eamin corde suo.
If your right eye should be your downfal , tear it out and throw it away; for it wil do you less harm tolose one part of yourself than to have your whole body thrown into hell.29 Quod si oculus tuus dexter scandalizat te, erue eum et proiceabs te; expedit enim tibi, ut pereat unum membrorum tuorum, quam totum corpustuum mittatur in gehennam.
And if your right hand should be your downfall, cut it off and throw it away; for it wil do you less harmto lose one part of yourself than to have your whole body go to hel .30 Et si dextera manus tua scandalizat te, abscideeam et proice abs te; expedit enim tibi, ut pereat unum membrorum tuorum, quamtotum corpus tuum abeat in gehennam.
'It has also been said, Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a writ of dismissal.31 Dictum est autem: “Quicumque dimiserit uxorem suam, det illi libellumrepudii”.
But I say this to you, everyone who divorces his wife, except for the case of an il icit marriage, makesher an adulteress; and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.32 Ego autem dico vobis: Omnis, qui dimiserit uxorem suam, exceptafornicationis causa, facit eam moechari; et, qui dimissam duxerit, adulterat.
'Again, you have heard how it was said to our ancestors, You must not break your oath, but must fulfilyour oaths to the Lord.33 Iterum audistis quia dictum est antiquis: "Non periurabis; reddes autemDomino iuramenta tua".
But I say this to you, do not swear at al , either by heaven, since that is God's throne;34 Ego autem dico vobis: Non iurare omnino, nequeper caelum, quia thronus Dei est,
or by earth, since that is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, since that is the city of the great King.35 neque per terram, quia scabellum est pedumeius, neque per Hierosolymam, quia civitas est magni Regis;
Do not swear by your own head either, since you cannot turn a single hair white or black.36 neque per caputtuum iuraveris, quia non potes unum capillum album facere aut nigrum.
All you need say is "Yes" if you mean yes, "No" if you mean no; anything more than this comes from the Evil One.37 Sitautem sermo vester: “Est, est”, “Non, non”; quod autem his abundantiusest, a Malo est.
'You have heard how it was said: Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.38 Audistis quia dictum est: "Oculum pro oculo et dentem pro dente".
But I say this to you: offer no resistance to the wicked. On the contrary, if anyone hits you on the rightcheek, offer him the other as wel ;39 Ego autem dico vobis: Non resistere malo; sed si quis te percusserit indextera maxilla tua, praebe illi et alteram;
if someone wishes to go to law with you to get your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.40 et ei, qui vult tecum iudiciocontendere et tunicam tuam tollere, remitte ei et pallium;
And if anyone requires you to go one mile, go two miles with him.41 et quicumque teangariaverit mille passus, vade cum illo duo.
Give to anyone who asks you, and if anyone wants to borrow, do not turn away.42 Qui petit a te, da ei; etvolenti mutuari a te, ne avertaris.
'You have heard how it was said, You wil love your neighbour and hate your enemy.43 Audistis quia dictum est: "Diliges proximum tuum et odio habebisinimicum tuum".
But I say this to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you;44 Ego autem dico vobis: Diligite inimicos vestros et oratepro persequentibus vos,
so that you may be children of your Father in heaven, for he causes his sun to rise on the bad as wellas the good, and sends down rain to fal on the upright and the wicked alike.45 ut sitis filii Patris vestri, qui in caelis est, quiasolem suum oriri facit super malos et bonos et pluit super iustos et iniustos.
For if you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Do not even the tax col ectors do asmuch?46 Si enim dilexeritis eos, qui vos diligunt, quam mercedem habetis? Nonne etpublicani hoc faciunt?
And if you save your greetings for your brothers, are you doing anything exceptional?47 Et si salutaveritis fratres vestros tantum, quidamplius facitis? Nonne et ethnici hoc faciunt?
Do not even the gentiles do as much? You must therefore be perfect, just as your heavenly Father isperfect.'48 Estote ergo vos perfecti,sicut Pater vester caelestis perfectus est.
