Matthew 23

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Then addressing the crowds and his disciples Jesus said,	1 Allora Gesù volgendosi alle turbe e ai discepoli,
2 'The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses.	2 disse: Sulla cattedra di Mosè si assisero gli Scribi e i Farisei;
3 You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, sincethey do not practise what they preach.	3 osservate e fate adunque tutto ciò che vi diranno; ma non vogliate imitarli, chè dicono e non fanno.
4 They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but wil they lift a finger to move them?Not they!	4 Difatti, legan pesi grandi e insopportabili e ne carican le spalle della gente; ma essi non li vogliono neppure muovere con un dito.
5 Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader headbands and longer tassels,	5 Fanno poi tutte le loro opere per essere veduti: perciò portan più larghe le filatterie, più lunghe le frange:
6 like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues,	6 e amano i primi posti nei conviti, i primi seggi nelle sinagoghe
7 being greeted respectful y in the market squares and having people cal them Rabbi.	7 ed i saluti nelle piazze ed essere dalla gente chiamati maestri.
8 'You, however, must not al ow yourselves to be cal ed Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and youare al brothers.	8 Ma voi non vogliate essere chiamati maestri; perchè uno solo è il vostro Maestro, voi siete tutti fratelli.
9 You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven.	9 Nè chiamate alcuno padre sulla terra; perchè uno solo è il vostro Padre, quello che è nei cieli.
10 Nor must you al ow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ.	10 Nè fatevi chia mar guide; perchè l'unica vostra guida è il Cristo.
11 The greatest among you must be your servant.	11 Chi è maggiore tra di voi, sarà vostro ministro.
12 Anyone who raises himself up wil be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself wil be raised up.	12 Chi si esalta sarà umiliato, chi si umilia sarà esaltato.
13 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people'sfaces, neither going in yourselves nor al owing others to go who want to.	13 Ma guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, perchè serrate in faccia alla gente il regno dei cieli; chè nè c'entrate voi, nè lasciate entrar chi è alla porta.
14	14 Guai a voi Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che divorate le case delle vedove, ostentando lunghe orazioni: per questo sarete giudicati più severamente.
15 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over sea and land to make a singleproselyte, and anyone who becomes one you make twice as fit for hel as you are.	15 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che viaggiate, per mare e per terra, a fare un proselito, e, fatto che sia lo rendete figlio dell'inferno il doppio di voi:
16 'Alas for you, blind guides! You say, "If anyone swears by the Temple, it has no force; but anyonewho swears by the gold of the Temple is bound."	16 Guai a voi, guide cieche, che dite: Se uno giura pel tempio non è niente; ma se uno giura per l'oro del tempio resta obbligato.
17 Fools and blind! For which is of greater value, the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?	17 Stolti e ciechi! E chi è da più, l'oro o il tempio che santifica l'oro?
18 Again, "If anyone swears by the altar it has no force; but anyone who swears by the offering on thealtar, is bound."	18 E se uno giura per l'altare non è niente, ma se uno giura per l'offerta che c'è sopra, resta obbligato.
19 You blind men! For which is of greater worth, the offering or the altar that makes the offering sacred?	19 Ciechi! Chi è da più, l'offerta o l'altare che santifica l'offerta?
20 Therefore, someone who swears by the altar is swearing by that and by everything on it.	20 Chi dunque giura per l'altare, giura per esso e per tutte le cose che vi stan sopra,
21 And someone who swears by the Temple is swearing by that and by the One who dwel s in it.	21 e chi giura pel tempio, giura per esso e per chi lo abita,
22 And someone who swears by heaven is swearing by the throne of God and by the One who is seatedthere.	22 e chi giura per il cielo, giura per il trono di Dio e per chi ci siede.
23 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay your tithe of mint and dill and cumminand have neglected the weightier matters of the Law-justice, mercy, good faith! These you should havepractised, those not neglected.	23 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che pagate la decima della menta, dell'aneto e del cimino, ed avete trascurate le cose più essenziali della legge: la giustizia, la misericordia e la fede. Queste le cose che bisognava fare senza ometter quelle.
24 You blind guides, straining out gnats and swal owing camels!	24 Guide cieche, scolate il moscerino, inghiottite il cammello!
25 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of cup and dish and leavethe inside full of extortion and intemperance.	25 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che lavate il di fuori del bicchiere e del piatto; ma dentro siete pieni di rapina e d'immondezza.
26 Blind Pharisee! Clean the inside of cup and dish first so that it and the outside are both clean.	26 Fariseo cieco, lava prima il di dentro del bicchiere e del piatto; sicché anche il di fuori diventi pulito.
27 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that lookhandsome on the outside, but inside are ful of the bones of the dead and every kind of corruption.	27 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che siete simili a sepolcri imbiancati, che di fuori paion belli, ma dentro son pieni d'ossa di morto e d'ogni putredine.
28 In just the same way, from the outside you look upright, but inside you are ful of hypocrisy andlawlessness.	28 Così anche voi, di fuori apparite giusti alla gente; ma dentro siete pieni d'ipocrisia e d'iniquità.
29 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build the sepulchres of the prophets anddecorate the tombs of the upright,	29 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che fabbricate sepolcri ai profeti e abbellite le tombe dei giusti,
30 saying, "We would never have joined in shedding the blood of the prophets, had we lived in ourancestors' day."	30 dicendo: Se fossimo vissuti ai tempi dei nostri padri, non saremmo stati loro complici nel sangue dei profeti.
31 So! Your own evidence tells against you! You are the children of those who murdered the prophets!	31 Così voi attestate contro voi stessi, di essere discendenti di coloro che uccisero i profeti.
32 Very well then, finish off the work that your ancestors began.	32 E voi colmate la misura dei padri vostri.
33 'You serpents, brood of vipers, how can you escape being condemned to hell?	33 Serpenti, razza di vipere, come scamperete alla condanna dell'inferno?
34 This is why -- look -- I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some you will slaughterand crucify, some you wil scourge in your synagogues and hunt from town to town;	34 Perciò, ecco io vi mando profeti e savi e Scribi, e di questi ne ucciderete, ne crocifìggerete e ne flagellerete nelle vostre sinagoghe, e li perseguiterete di città in città,
35 and so you wil draw down on yourselves the blood of every upright person that has been shed onearth, from the blood of Abel the holy to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah whom you murdered betweenthe sanctuary and the altar.	35 finchè non venga su di voi tutto il sangue giusto, sparso sulla terra, dal sangue del giusto Abele fino a quello di Zaccaria, figlio di Barachia, che voi uccideste fra il tempio e l'altare.
36 In truth I tel you, it wil al recoil on this generation.	36 In verità vi dico: tutto ciò avverrà su questa generazione.
37 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How oftenhave I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you refused!	37 Gerusalemme, Gerusalemme, che uccidi i profeti e lapidi quelli che ti sono inviati, quante volte io ho voluto radunare i tuoi figli come la chioccia raduna i suoi pulcini sotto le ali, e non hai voluto!
38 Look! Your house wil be deserted,	38 Ecco la vostra casa vi sarà lasciata deserta.
39 for, I promise, you shal not see me any more until you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in thename of the Lord!'	39 E vi dico: non mi vedrete più, finché non diciate: Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore.
