NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Then addressing the crowds and his disciples Jesus said,1 Tunc Iesus locutus est ad turbas et ad discipulos suos
'The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses.2 dicens: “Super cathedram Moysis sederunt scribae et pharisaei.
You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, sincethey do not practise what they preach.3 Omnia ergo, quaecumquedixerint vobis, facite et servate; secundum opera vero eorum nolite facere:dicunt enim et non faciunt.
They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but wil they lift a finger to move them? Not they!4 Alligant autem onera gravia et importabilia etimponunt in umeros hominum, ipsi autem digito suo nolunt ea movere.
Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader headbands and longer tassels,5 Omnia veroopera sua faciunt, ut videantur ab hominibus: dilatant enim phylacteria sua etmagnificant fimbrias,
like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues,6 amant autem primum recubitum in cenis et primascathedras in synagogis
being greeted respectful y in the market squares and having people cal them Rabbi.7 et salutationes in foro et vocari ab hominibus Rabbi.
'You, however, must not al ow yourselves to be cal ed Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and youare al brothers.8 Vos autem nolite vocari Rabbi; unus enim est Magister vester, omnes autem vosfratres estis.
You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven.9 Et Patrem nolite vocare vobis super terram, unus enim est Patervester, caelestis.
Nor must you al ow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ.10 Nec vocemini Magistri, quia Magister vester unus est,Christus.
The greatest among you must be your servant.11 Qui maior est vestrum, erit minister vester.
Anyone who raises himself up wil be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself wil be raised up.12 Qui autem seexaltaverit, humiliabitur; et, qui se humiliaverit, exaltabitur.
'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people'sfaces, neither going in yourselves nor al owing others to go who want to.13 Vae autem vobis, scribae et pharisaei hypocritae, quia clauditis regnumcaelorum ante homines! Vos
enim non intratis nec introeuntes sinitis intrare.
14
'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over sea and land to make a singleproselyte, and anyone who becomes one you make twice as fit for hel as you are.15 Vae vobis, scribae etpharisaei hypocritae, quia circuitis mare et aridam, ut faciatis unumproselytum, et cum fuerit factus, facitis eum filium gehennae duplo quam vos!
'Alas for you, blind guides! You say, "If anyone swears by the Temple, it has no force; but anyonewho swears by the gold of the Temple is bound."16 Vae vobis, duces caeci, qui dicitis: “Quicumque iuraverit per templum, nihil est; quicumque autem iuraverit in auro templi, debet”.
Fools and blind! For which is of greater value, the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?17 Stulti etcaeci! Quid enim maius est: aurum an templum, quod sanctificat aurum?
Again, "If anyone swears by the altar it has no force; but anyone who swears by the offering on thealtar, is bound."18 Et: “Quicumqueiuraverit in altari, nihil est; quicumque autem iuraverit in dono, quod estsuper illud, debet”.
You blind men! For which is of greater worth, the offering or the altar that makes the offering sacred?19 Caeci! Quid enim maius est: donum an altare, quodsanctificat donum?
Therefore, someone who swears by the altar is swearing by that and by everything on it.20 Qui ergo iuraverit in altari, iurat in eo et in omnibus,quae super illud sunt;
And someone who swears by the Temple is swearing by that and by the One who dwel s in it.21 et, qui iuraverit in templo, iurat in illo et in eo,qui inhabitat in ipso;
And someone who swears by heaven is swearing by the throne of God and by the One who is seatedthere.22 et, qui iuraverit in caelo, iurat in throno Dei et ineo, qui sedet super eum.
'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay your tithe of mint and dill and cumminand have neglected the weightier matters of the Law-justice, mercy, good faith! These you should havepractised, those not neglected.23 Vae vobis, scribae et pharisaei hypocritae, quia decimatis mentam et anethumet cyminum et reliquistis, quae graviora sunt legis: iudicium et misericordiamet fidem! Haec oportuit facere et illa non omittere.
You blind guides, straining out gnats and swal owing camels!24 Duces caeci, excolantesculicem, camelum autem glutientes.
'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of cup and dish and leavethe inside full of extortion and intemperance.25 Vae vobis, scribae et pharisaei hypocritae, quia mundatis, quod de foris estcalicis et paropsidis, intus autem pleni sunt rapina et immunditia!
Blind Pharisee! Clean the inside of cup and dish first so that it and the outside are both clean.26 Pharisaeecaece, munda prius, quod intus est calicis, ut fiat et id, quod de foris eiusest, mundum.
'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that lookhandsome on the outside, but inside are ful of the bones of the dead and every kind of corruption.27 Vae vobis, scribae et pharisaei hypocritae, quia similes estis sepulcrisdealbatis, quae a foris quidem parent speciosa, intus vero plena sunt ossibusmortuorum et omni spurcitia!
In just the same way, from the outside you look upright, but inside you are ful of hypocrisy andlawlessness.28 Sic et vos a foris quidem paretis hominibusiusti, intus autem pleni estis hypocrisi et iniquitate.
'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build the sepulchres of the prophets anddecorate the tombs of the upright,29 Vae vobis, scribae et pharisaei hypocritae, qui aedificatis sepulcraprophetarum et ornatis monumenta iustorum
saying, "We would never have joined in shedding the blood of the prophets, had we lived in ourancestors' day."30 et dicitis: “Si fuissemus indiebus patrum nostrorum, non essemus socii eorum in sanguine prophetarum”!
So! Your own evidence tells against you! You are the children of those who murdered the prophets!31 Itaque testimonio estis vobismetipsis quia filii estis eorum, qui prophetasocciderunt.
Very well then, finish off the work that your ancestors began.32 Et vos implete mensuram patrum vestrorum.
'You serpents, brood of vipers, how can you escape being condemned to hell?33 Serpentes, geniminaviperarum, quomodo fugietis a iudicio gehennae?
This is why -- look -- I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some you will slaughterand crucify, some you wil scourge in your synagogues and hunt from town to town;34 Ideo ecce ego mitto ad vosprophetas et sapientes et scribas; ex illis occidetis et crucifigetis et ex eisflagellabitis in synagogis vestris et persequemini de civitate in civitatem,
and so you wil draw down on yourselves the blood of every upright person that has been shed onearth, from the blood of Abel the holy to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah whom you murdered betweenthe sanctuary and the altar.35 ut veniat super vos omnis sanguis iustus, qui effusus est super terram asanguine Abel iusti usque ad sanguinem Zachariae filii Barachiae, quemoccidistis inter templum et altare.
In truth I tel you, it wil al recoil on this generation.36 Amen dico vobis: Venient haec omnia supergenerationem istam.
'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How oftenhave I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you refused!37 Ierusalem, Ierusalem, quae occidis prophetas et lapidas eos, qui ad te missisunt, quotiens volui congregare filios tuos, quemadmodum gallina congregatpullos suos sub alas, et noluistis!
Look! Your house wil be deserted,38 Ecce relinquitur vobis domus vestradeserta!
for, I promise, you shal not see me any more until you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in thename of the Lord!'39 Dico enim vobis: Non me videbitis amodo, donec dicatis:"Benedictus, qui venit in nomine Dominil" ”.
