NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Then addressing the crowds and his disciples Jesus said,	1 Allora Gesù si rivolse alle folle e ai suoi discepoli
2 'The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses.	2 dicendo: "Sulla cattedra di Mosè si sono assisi gli scribi e i farisei.
3 You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, sincethey do not practise what they preach.	3 Fate e osservate ciò che vi dicono, ma non quello che fanno. Poiché dicono, ma non fanno.
4 They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but wil they lift a finger to move them?Not they!	4 Legano infatti pesi opprimenti, difficili a portarsi, e li impongono sulle spalle degli uomini; ma essi non li vogliono rimuovere neppure con un dito.
5 Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader headbands and longer tassels,	5 Fanno tutto per essere visti dagli uomini. Infatti fanno sempre più larghe le loro filatterie e più lunghe le frange;
6 like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues,	6 amano i primi posti nei conviti e le prime file nelle sinagoghe;
7 being greeted respectful y in the market squares and having people cal them Rabbi.	7 amano essere salutati nelle piazze ed essere chiamati dalla gente rabbì".
8 'You, however, must not al ow yourselves to be cal ed Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and youare al brothers.	8 "Ma voi non vi fate chiamare rabbì, poiché uno solo è fra voi il Maestro e tutti voi siete fratelli.
9 You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven.	9 Nessuno chiamerete sulla terra vostro padre, poiché uno solo è il vostro Padre, quello celeste.
10 Nor must you al ow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ.	10 Non vi farete chiamare precettori, poiché uno solo è il vostro precettore, il Cristo.
11 The greatest among you must be your servant.	11 Chi è il maggiore fra voi sarà vostro servitore.
12 Anyone who raises himself up wil be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself wil be raised up.	12 Chi si esalterà sarà umiliato, e chi si umilierà sarà esaltato".
13 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people'sfaces, neither going in yourselves nor al owing others to go who want to.	13 "Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, che chiudete il regno dei cieli davanti agli uomini; infatti, voi non entrate e trattenete coloro che vorrebbero entrarci (
14	14 ).
15 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over sea and land to make a singleproselyte, and anyone who becomes one you make twice as fit for hel as you are.	15 Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, poiché siete capaci di attraversare il mare e un intero continente per fare un solo proselito, e quando ci siete riusciti lo rendete figlio della Geenna il doppio di voi.
16 'Alas for you, blind guides! You say, "If anyone swears by the Temple, it has no force; but anyonewho swears by the gold of the Temple is bound."	16 Guai a voi, guide cieche che dite: "Se uno giura per il tempio, è niente; se invece giura per l'oro del tempio, rimane obbligato".
17 Fools and blind! For which is of greater value, the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?	17 Stolti e ciechi! Che cosa vale di più: l'oro o il tempio che rende sacro l'oro?
18 Again, "If anyone swears by the altar it has no force; but anyone who swears by the offering on thealtar, is bound."	18 E dite ancora: "Se uno giura per l'altare, è niente; se invece giura per l'offerta che sta su di esso, rimane obbligato".
19 You blind men! For which is of greater worth, the offering or the altar that makes the offering sacred?	19 Ciechi, ma che cosa vale di più: l'offerta o l'altare che rende sacra l'offerta?
20 Therefore, someone who swears by the altar is swearing by that and by everything on it.	20 Chi dunque ha giurato per l'altare, fa giuramento per esso e per tutto ciò che si trova su di esso.
21 And someone who swears by the Temple is swearing by that and by the One who dwel s in it.	21 E chi ha giurato per il tempio, emette giuramento per esso e per Chi vi abita.
22 And someone who swears by heaven is swearing by the throne of God and by the One who is seatedthere.	22 E chi ha giurato per il cielo, fa giuramento per il trono di Dio e per Colui che vi è assiso.
23 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay your tithe of mint and dill and cumminand have neglected the weightier matters of the Law-justice, mercy, good faith! These you should havepractised, those not neglected.	23 Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, poiché pagate la decima sulla menta, sull'aneto e sul cumino e poi trascurate i precetti più gravi della legge, come la giustizia, la pietà, la fede. Queste cose bisognava osservare, pur senza trascurare quelle altre.
24 You blind guides, straining out gnats and swal owing camels!	24 Guide cieche, che filtrate il moscerino, e ingoiate il cammello!
25 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of cup and dish and leavethe inside full of extortion and intemperance.	25 Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, che pulite l'esterno della coppa e del piatto, e dentro rimangono pieni di rapina e d'immondizia.
26 Blind Pharisee! Clean the inside of cup and dish first so that it and the outside are both clean.	26 Cieco fariseo, pulisci prima l'interno della coppa e poi anche l'esterno di essa sarà pulito.
27 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that lookhandsome on the outside, but inside are ful of the bones of the dead and every kind of corruption.	27 Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, poiché siete come sepolcri imbiancati che all'esterno appaiono belli a vedersi, dentro invece sono pieni di ossa di morti e di ogni putredine.
28 In just the same way, from the outside you look upright, but inside you are ful of hypocrisy andlawlessness.	28 Così anche voi all'esterno apparite giusti davanti agli uomini, ma nell'interno siete pieni d'ipocrisia e d'iniquità.
29 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build the sepulchres of the prophets anddecorate the tombs of the upright,	29 Guai a voi, scribi e farisei ipocriti, poiché innalzate i sepolcri dei profeti e ornate i monumenti dei giusti
30 saying, "We would never have joined in shedding the blood of the prophets, had we lived in ourancestors' day."	30 dicendo: "Se fossimo stati ai tempi dei nostri padri, non ci saremmo associati a loro nel versare il sangue dei profeti".
31 So! Your own evidence tells against you! You are the children of those who murdered the prophets!	31 Così testimoniate, contro voi stessi, di essere figli di quelli che uccisero i profeti
32 Very well then, finish off the work that your ancestors began.	32 e colmate la misura dei vostri padri!".
33 'You serpents, brood of vipers, how can you escape being condemned to hell?	33 "Serpenti, razza di vipere, come sfuggirete al castigo della Geenna?
34 This is why -- look -- I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some you will slaughterand crucify, some you wil scourge in your synagogues and hunt from town to town;	34 Per questo, ecco che io mando a voi profeti, sapienti e scribi. Ebbene, di essi, parte ne ucciderete mettendoli in croce, parte ne flagellerete nelle vostre sinagoghe e li perseguiterete di città in città.
35 and so you wil draw down on yourselves the blood of every upright person that has been shed onearth, from the blood of Abel the holy to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah whom you murdered betweenthe sanctuary and the altar.	35 Verrà così su di voi tutto il sangue innocente sparso sulla terra, dal sangue del giusto Abele fino a quello di Zaccaria figlio di Barachia, che uccideste fra il santuario e l'altare.
36 In truth I tel you, it wil al recoil on this generation.	36 In verità vi dico: tutto ciò verrà su questa generazione.
37 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How oftenhave I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you refused!	37 Gerusalemme, Gerusalemme, che uccidi i profeti e lapidi quelli che ti sono mandati, quante volte ho tentato di raccogliere i tuoi figli, come la gallina raduna i suoi pulcini sotto le ali e voi non avete voluto!
38 Look! Your house wil be deserted,	38 Ecco: la vostra casa vi sarà lasciata deserta.
39 for, I promise, you shal not see me any more until you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in thename of the Lord!'	39 Vi dico infatti: da ora in poi non mi vedrete, fino a quando non direte: "Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore!".
