Matthew 23

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Then addressing the crowds and his disciples Jesus said,	1 Entonces Jesús se dirigió a la gente y a sus discípulos
2 'The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses.	2 y les dijo: «En la cátedra de Moisés se han sentado los escribas y los fariseos.
3 You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, sincethey do not practise what they preach.	3 Haced, pues, y observad todo lo que os digan; pero no imitéis su conducta, porque dicen y no hacen.
4 They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but wil they lift a finger to move them?Not they!	4 Atan cargas pesadas y las echan a las espaldas de la gente, pero ellos ni con el dedo quieren moverlas.
5 Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader headbands and longer tassels,	5 Todas sus obras las hacen para ser vistos por los hombres; se hacen bien anchas las filacterias y bien largas las orlas del manto;
6 like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues,	6 quieren el primer puesto en los banquetes y los primeros asientos en las sinagogas,
7 being greeted respectful y in the market squares and having people cal them Rabbi.	7 que se les salude en las plazas y que la gente les llame “Rabbí”.
8 'You, however, must not al ow yourselves to be cal ed Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and youare al brothers.	8 «Vosotros, en cambio, no os dejéis llamar “Rabbí”, porque uno solo es vuestro Maestro; y vosotros sois todos hermanos.
9 You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven.	9 Ni llaméis a nadie “Padre” vuestro en la tierra, porque uno solo es vuestro Padre: el del cielo.
10 Nor must you al ow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ.	10 Ni tampoco os dejéis llamar “Directores”, porque uno solo es vuestro Director: el Cristo.
11 The greatest among you must be your servant.	11 El mayor entre vosotros será vuestro servidor.
12 Anyone who raises himself up wil be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself wil be raised up.	12 Pues el que se ensalce, será humillado; y el que se humille, será ensalzado.
13 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people'sfaces, neither going in yourselves nor al owing others to go who want to.	13 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que cerráis a los hombres el Reino de los Cielos! Vosotros ciertamente no entráis; y a los que están entrando no les dejáis entrar.

15 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over sea and land to make a singleproselyte, and anyone who becomes one you make twice as fit for hel as you are.	15 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que recorréis mar y tierra para hacer un prosélito, y, cuando llega a serlo, le hacéis hijo de condenación el doble que vosotros!
16 'Alas for you, blind guides! You say, "If anyone swears by the Temple, it has no force; but anyonewho swears by the gold of the Temple is bound."	16 «¡Ay de vosotros, guías ciegos, que decís: “Si uno jura por el Santuario, eso no es nada; mas si jura por el oro del Santuario, queda obligado!”
17 Fools and blind! For which is of greater value, the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?	17 ¡Insensatos y ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante, el oro, o el Santuario que hace sagrado el oro?
18 Again, "If anyone swears by the altar it has no force; but anyone who swears by the offering on thealtar, is bound."	18 Y también: “Si uno jura por el altar, eso no es nada; mas si jura por la ofrenda que está sobre él, queda obligado.”
19 You blind men! For which is of greater worth, the offering or the altar that makes the offering sacred?	19 ¡Ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante, la ofrenda, o el altar que hace sagrada la ofrenda?
20 Therefore, someone who swears by the altar is swearing by that and by everything on it.	20 Quien jura, pues, por el altar, jura por él y por todo lo que está sobre él.
21 And someone who swears by the Temple is swearing by that and by the One who dwel s in it.	21 Quien jura por el Santuario, jura por él y por Aquel que lo habita.
22 And someone who swears by heaven is swearing by the throne of God and by the One who is seatedthere.	22 Y quien jura por el cielo, jura por el trono de Dios y por Aquel que está sentado en él.
23 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay your tithe of mint and dill and cumminand have neglected the weightier matters of the Law-justice, mercy, good faith! These you should havepractised, those not neglected.	23 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que pagáis el diezmo de la menta, del aneto y del comino, y descuidáis lo más importante de la Ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fe! Esto es lo que había que practicar, aunque sin descuidar aquello.
24 You blind guides, straining out gnats and swal owing camels!	24 ¡Guías ciegos, que coláis el mosquito y os tragáis el camello!
25 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of cup and dish and leavethe inside full of extortion and intemperance.	25 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que purificáis por fuera la copa y el plato, mientras por dentro están llenos de rapiña e intemperancia!
26 Blind Pharisee! Clean the inside of cup and dish first so that it and the outside are both clean.	26 ¡Fariseo ciego, purifica primero por dentro la copa, para que también por fuera quede pura!
27 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that lookhandsome on the outside, but inside are ful of the bones of the dead and every kind of corruption.	27 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, pues sois semejantes a sepulcros blanqueados, que por fuera parecen bonitos, pero por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de toda inmundicia!
28 In just the same way, from the outside you look upright, but inside you are ful of hypocrisy andlawlessness.	28 Así también vosotros, por fuera aparecéis justos ante los hombres, pero por dentro estáis llenos de hipocresía y de iniquidad.
29 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build the sepulchres of the prophets anddecorate the tombs of the upright,	29 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, porque edificáis los sepulcros de los profetas y adornáis los monumentos de los justos,
30 saying, "We would never have joined in shedding the blood of the prophets, had we lived in ourancestors' day."	30 y decís: “Si nosotros hubiéramos vivido en el tiempo de nuestros padres, no habríamos tenido parte con ellos en la sangre de los profetas!”
31 So! Your own evidence tells against you! You are the children of those who murdered the prophets!	31 Con lo cual atestiguáis contra vosotros mismos que sois hijos de los que mataron a los profetas.
32 Very well then, finish off the work that your ancestors began.	32 ¡Colmad también vosotros la medida de vuestros padres!
33 'You serpents, brood of vipers, how can you escape being condemned to hell?	33 «¡Serpientes, raza de víboras! ¿Cómo vais a escapar a la condenación de la gehenna?
34 This is why -- look -- I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some you will slaughterand crucify, some you wil scourge in your synagogues and hunt from town to town;	34 Por eso, he aquí que yo envío a vosotros profetas, sabios y escribas: a unos los mataréis y los crucificaréis, a otros los azotaréis en vuestras sinagogas y los perseguiréis de ciudad en ciudad,
35 and so you wil draw down on yourselves the blood of every upright person that has been shed onearth, from the blood of Abel the holy to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah whom you murdered betweenthe sanctuary and the altar.	35 para que caiga sobre vosotros toda la sangre inocente derramada sobre la tierra, desde la sangre del inocente Abel hasta la sangre de Zacarías, hijo de Baraquías, a quien matasteis entre el Santuario y el altar.
36 In truth I tel you, it wil al recoil on this generation.	36 Yo os aseguro: todo esto recaerá sobre esta generación.
37 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How oftenhave I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you refused!	37 «¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, la que mata a los profetas y apedrea a los que le son enviados! ¡Cuántas veces he querido reunir a tus hijos, como una gallina reúne a sus pollos bajo las alas, y no habéis querido!
38 Look! Your house wil be deserted,	38 Pues bien, se os va a dejar desierta vuestra casa.
39 for, I promise, you shal not see me any more until you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in thename of the Lord!'	39 Porque os digo que ya no me volveréis a ver hasta que digáis: ¡Bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor!»
