Matthew 23

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Then addressing the crowds and his disciples Jesus said,	1 Entonces Jesús dijo a la multitud y a sus discípulos:
2 'The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses.	2 «Los escribas y fariseos ocupan la cátedra de Moisés;
3 You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, sincethey do not practise what they preach.	3 ustedes hagan y cumplan todo lo que ellos les digan, pero no se guíen por sus obras, porque no hacen lo que dicen.
4 They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but wil they lift a finger to move them?Not they!	4 Atan pesadas cargas y las ponen sobre los hombros de los demás, mientras que ellos no quieren moverlas ni siquiera con el dedo.
5 Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader headbands and longer tassels,	5 Todo lo hacen para que los vean: agradan las filacterias y alargas los flecos de sus mantos;
6 like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues,	6 les gusta ocupar los primeros puestos en los banquetes y los primeros asientos en las sinagogas,
7 being greeted respectful y in the market squares and having people cal them Rabbi.	7 ser saludamos en las plazas y oírse llamar "mi maestro" por la gente.
8 'You, however, must not al ow yourselves to be cal ed Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and youare al brothers.	8 En cuanto a ustedes, no se hagan llamar "maestro", porque no tienen más que un Maestro y todos ustedes son hermanos.
9 You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven.	9 a Nadie en el mundo llamen "padre", porque no tienen sino uno, el Padre celestial.
10 Nor must you al ow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ.	10 No se dejen llamar tampoco "doctores", porque sólo tienen un Doctor, que es el Mesías.
11 The greatest among you must be your servant.	11 Que el más grande de entre ustedes se haga servidor de los otros,
12 Anyone who raises himself up wil be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself wil be raised up.	12 porque el que se ensalza será humillado, y el que se humilla será ensalzado».
13 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people'sfaces, neither going in yourselves nor al owing others to go who want to.	13 «¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que cierran a los hombres el Reino de los Cielos! Ni entran ustedes, ni dejan entrar a los que quisieran.
14	14 [¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que devoran los bienes de las viudas y fingen hacer largas oraciones! Por eso serán juzgados con más severidad.]
15 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over sea and land to make a singleproselyte, and anyone who becomes one you make twice as fit for hel as you are.	15 ¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que recorren mar y tierra para conseguir un prosélito, y cuando lo han conseguido lo hacen dos veces más digno de la Gehena que ustedes!
16 'Alas for you, blind guides! You say, "If anyone swears by the Temple, it has no force; but anyonewho swears by the gold of the Temple is bound."	16 ¡Ay de ustedes, guías, ciegos, que dicen: "Si se jura por el santuario, el juramento no vale; pero si se jura por el oro del santuario, entonces sí que vale"!
17 Fools and blind! For which is of greater value, the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?	17 ¡Insensatos y ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante: el oro o el santuario que hace sagrado el oro?
18 Again, "If anyone swears by the altar it has no force; but anyone who swears by the offering on thealtar, is bound."	18 Ustedes dicen también: "Si se jura por el altar, el juramento no vale, pero vale si se jura por la ofrenda que está sobre el altar".
19 You blind men! For which is of greater worth, the offering or the altar that makes the offering sacred?	19 ¡Ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante, la ofrenda o el altar que hace sagrada esa ofrenda?
20 Therefore, someone who swears by the altar is swearing by that and by everything on it.	20 Ahora bien, jurar por el altar, es jurar por él y por todo lo que está sobre él.
21 And someone who swears by the Temple is swearing by that and by the One who dwel s in it.	21 Jurar por el santuario, es jurar por él y por aquel que lo habita.
22 And someone who swears by heaven is swearing by the throne of God and by the One who is seatedthere.	22 Jurar por el cielo, es jurar por el trono de Dios y por aquel que está sentado en él.
23 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay your tithe of mint and dill and cumminand have neglected the weightier matters of the Law-justice, mercy, good faith! These you should havepractised, those not neglected.	23 ¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que pagan el diezmo de la menta, del hinojo y del comino, y descuidan lo esencial de la Ley; la justicia, la misericordia y la fidelidad! Hay que practicar esto, sin descuidar aquello.
24 You blind guides, straining out gnats and swal owing camels!	24 ¡Guías ciegos, que filtran el mosquito y se tragan el camello!
25 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of cup and dish and leavethe inside full of extortion and intemperance.	25 ¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que limpian por fuera la copa y el plato, mientras que por dentro están llenos de codicia y desenfreno!
26 Blind Pharisee! Clean the inside of cup and dish first so that it and the outside are both clean.	26 ¡Fariseo ciego! Limpia primero la copa por dentro, y así también quedará limpia por fuera.
27 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that lookhandsome on the outside, but inside are ful of the bones of the dead and every kind of corruption.	27 ¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que parecen sepulcros blanqueados: hermosos por fuera, pero por dentro llenos de huesos de muertos y de podredumbre!
28 In just the same way, from the outside you look upright, but inside you are ful of hypocrisy andlawlessness.	28 Así también son ustedes: por fuera parecen justos delante de los hombres, pero por dentro están llenos de hipocresía y de iniquidad.
29 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build the sepulchres of the prophets anddecorate the tombs of the upright,	29 ¡Ay de ustedes, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que construyen los sepulcros de los profetas y adornan las tumbas de los justos,
30 saying, "We would never have joined in shedding the blood of the prophets, had we lived in ourancestors' day."	30 diciendo: "Si hubiéramos vivido en el tiempo de nuestros padres, no nos hubiéramos unido a ellos para derramar la sangre de los profetas"!
31 So! Your own evidence tells against you! You are the children of those who murdered the prophets!	31 De esa manera atestiguan contra ustedes mismos que son hijos de los que mataron a los profetas.
32 Very well then, finish off the work that your ancestors began.	32 ¡Colmen entonces la medida de sus padres!
33 'You serpents, brood of vipers, how can you escape being condemned to hell?	33 ¡Serpientes, raza de víboras! ¿Cómo podrán escapar a la condenación de la Gehena?
34 This is why -- look -- I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some you will slaughterand crucify, some you wil scourge in your synagogues and hunt from town to town;	34 Por eso, yo voy a enviarles profetas, sabios y escribas; ustedes matarán y crucificarán a unos, azotarán a otros en las sinagogas, y los perseguirán de ciudad en ciudad.
35 and so you wil draw down on yourselves the blood of every upright person that has been shed onearth, from the blood of Abel the holy to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah whom you murdered betweenthe sanctuary and the altar.	35 Así caerá sobre ustedes toda la sangre del justo Abel, hasta la sangre de Zacarías, hijo de Baraquías, al que ustedes asesinaron entre el santuario y el altar.
36 In truth I tel you, it wil al recoil on this generation.	36 Les aseguro que todo esto sobrevendrá a la presente generación.
37 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How oftenhave I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you refused!	37 ¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, que matas a los profetas y apedreas a los que te son enviados! ¡Cuántas veces quise reunir a tus hijos, como la gallina reúne bajo sus alas a los pollitos, y tú no quisiste!
38 Look! Your house wil be deserted,	38 Por eso, a ustedes la casa les quedará desierta.
39 for, I promise, you shal not see me any more until you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in thename of the Lord!'	39 Les aseguro que ya no me verán más, hasta que digan: ¡Bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor!».
