Matthew 23

1 Then addressing the crowds and his disciples Jesus said,	1 Allora Gesù parlò alle turbe, e a' suoi discepoli,
2 'The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses.	2 Dicendo: Sulla cattedra di Mosè si assisero gli Scribi, e i Farisei.
3 You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, sincethey do not practise what they preach.	3 Tutto quello pertanto, che vi diranno, osservatelo, e fatelo; ma non vogliate far quel, che essi fanno: conciossiachè dicono, e non fanno.
4 They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but wil they lift a finger to move them?Not they!	4 Imperocché accumulano some gravi, e importabili, e le pongono su le spalle degli uomini; ma per loro non vogliono muoverle col loro dito.
5 Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader headbands and longer tassels,	5 Fanno poi tutte le loro opere per essere osservati dagli uomini; imperocché portano più ampie le filatterie, e più lunghe le frange (della veste).
6 like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues,	6 Ed amano i primi posti ne' banchetti, e le prime sedie nelle sinagoghe.
7 being greeted respectful y in the market squares and having people cal them Rabbi.	7 E di essere salutati nel foro, e di essere dalla gente chiamati maestri.
8 'You, however, must not al ow yourselves to be cal ed Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and youare al brothers.	8 Ma voi non vogliate esser chiamati maestri; imperocché uno solo è il vostro maestro, e voi siete tutti fratelli.
9 You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven.	9 Né vogliate chiamare alcuno sulla terra vostro padre; imperocché il solo Padre vostro è quegli, che sta ne' cieli.
10 Nor must you al ow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ.	10 Né siate chiamati maestri, perché l'unico vostro maestro è il Cristo.
11 The greatest among you must be your servant.	11 Chi sarà maggiore tra voi, sarà vostro servo.
12 Anyone who raises himself up wil be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself wil be raised up.	12 E chi si esalterà, sarà umiliato, e chi si umilierà, sarà esaltato.
13 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people'sfaces, neither going in yourselves nor al owing others to go who want to.	13 Ma guai a voi. Scribi, e Farisei ipocriti, perché chiudete in faccia agli uomini il regno de' cieli: imperocché né voi vi entrate, né permettete, che v' entrino quelli, che stanno per entrarvi.
14	14 Guai a voi. Scribi, e Farisei ipocriti; perché divorate le case delle vedove col pretesto di lunghe orazioni: per questo sarete giudicati più severamente.
15 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over sea and land to make a singleproselyte, and anyone who becomes one you make twice as fit for hel as you are.	15 Guai a voi, Scribi, e Farisei ipocriti; perché scorrete mare, e terra per fare un proselito: e fatto che sia, lo rendete figliuolo dell'inferno il doppio di voi.
16 'Alas for you, blind guides! You say, "If anyone swears by the Temple, it has no force; but anyonewho swears by the gold of the Temple is bound."	16 Guai a voi, ciechi condottieri, i quali dite: che uno abbia giurato per lo tempio, non è niente: ma se abbia giurato per l'oro del tempio, resta obbligato.
17 Fools and blind! For which is of greater value, the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?	17 Stolti, e ciechi: Imperocché cosa è da più, l'oro, od il tempio, che santifica l'oro?
18 Again, "If anyone swears by the altar it has no force; but anyone who swears by the offering on thealtar, is bound."	18 E che uno abbia giurato per l'altare non è niente: ma chi avrà giurato per l'offerta, che è sopra di esso, resta obbligato.
19 You blind men! For which is of greater worth, the offering or the altar that makes the offering sacred?	19 Ciechi; Imperocché cosa è da più l'offerta, o l'altare, che santifica l'offerta?
20 Therefore, someone who swears by the altar is swearing by that and by everything on it.	20 Chi dunque giura per l'altare, giura e per esso, e per tutte le cose, che vi sono sopra:
21 And someone who swears by the Temple is swearing by that and by the One who dwel s in it.	21 E chiunque giura per lo tempio, giura, e per esso, e per colui, che lo abita:
22 And someone who swears by heaven is swearing by the throne of God and by the One who is seatedthere.	22 E chi giura per il cielo, giura per il trono di Dio, e per colui, che siede sopra di esso.
23 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay your tithe of mint and dill and cumminand have neglected the weightier matters of the Law-justice, mercy, good faith! These you should havepractised, those not neglected.	23 Guai a voi Scribi, e Farisei ipocriti, che pagate la decima della menta, e dell'aneto, e del cumino, e avete trascurato il più essenzial della legge, la giustizia, e la misericordia, e la fede. Queste cose era d'uopo di fare, e quelle non omettere.
24 You blind guides, straining out gnats and swal owing camels!	24 Condottieri ciechi, che scolate un moscherino, e ingoiate un cammello.
25 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of cup and dish and leavethe inside full of extortion and intemperance.	25 Guai a voi, Scribi, e Farisei ipocriti, perché il di fuora lavate del bicchiere, e del piatto: al di dentro poi siete pieni di rapina, e d'immondezza.
26 Blind Pharisee! Clean the inside of cup and dish first so that it and the outside are both clean.	26 Fariseo cieco, lava prima il di dentro del calice, e del piatto, onde anche il di fuora diventi mondo.
27 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that lookhandsome on the outside, but inside are ful of the bones of the dead and every kind of corruption.	27 Guai a voi Scribi, e Farisei ipocriti; perché siete simili a' sepolcri imbiancati, che al di fuori appariscon belli alla gente, ma dentro pieni sono di ossa di morti, e d'ogni sporcizia:
28 In just the same way, from the outside you look upright, but inside you are ful of hypocrisy andlawlessness.	28 Così anche voi al di fuori comparite giusti alla gente; ma dentro pieni siete d'ipocrisìa, e d'iniquità.
29 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build the sepulchres of the prophets anddecorate the tombs of the upright,	29 Guai a voi, Scribi, e Farisei ipocriti, che fabbricate sepolcri ai profeti,e abbellite i monumenti de' giusti.
30 saying, "We would never have joined in shedding the blood of the prophets, had we lived in ourancestors' day."	30 E dite: Se fossimo stati a tempo de' nostri padri, non saremmo stati complici con essi del sangue dei profeti.
31 So! Your own evidence tells against you! You are the children of those who murdered the prophets!	31 Cosi provate contro di voi medesimi, che siete figliuoli di coloro, che uccisero i profeti.
32 Very well then, finish off the work that your ancestors began.	32 Colmate pur voi la misura de' padri vostri.
33 'You serpents, brood of vipers, how can you escape being condemned to hell?	33 Serpenti, razza di vipere, come scamperete voi dalla condanna dell'inferno?
34 This is why -- look -- I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some you will slaughterand crucify, some you wil scourge in your synagogues and hunt from town to town;	34 Per questo, ecco, che io mando a voi de' profeti, e de' saggi, e degli Scribi, e di questi ne ucciderete, ne crocifiggerete, e ne flagellerete nelle vostre sinagoghe, e li perseguiterete di città in città:
35 and so you wil draw down on yourselves the blood of every upright person that has been shed onearth, from the blood of Abel the holy to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah whom you murdered betweenthe sanctuary and the altar.	35 Onde cada sopra di voi tutto il sangue giusto sparso sopra la terra, dal sangue del giusto Abele sino al sangue di Zaccaria figliuolo di Barachia, che voi uccideste tra il tempio, e l'altare.
36 In truth I tel you, it wil al recoil on this generation.	36 In verità io vi dico, che tutto questo verrà sopra di questa generazione.
37 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How oftenhave I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you refused!	37 Gerusalemme, Gerusalemme, che uccidi i profeti, e lapidi coloro, che a te sono mandati, quante volte ho voluto io radunare i tuoi figli, come la gallina raduna i suoi pulcini sotto le ali, e non hai voluto?
38 Look! Your house wil be deserted,	38 Ecco, che vi sarà lasciata deserta la vostra casa.
39 for, I promise, you shal not see me any more until you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in thename of the Lord!'	39 Imperocché vi dico: Non mi vedrete da ora in poi, sino a tanto che diciate: Benedetto colui, che viene nel nome del Signore.
