Matthew 2

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 After Jesus had been born at Bethlehem in Judaea during the reign of King Herod, suddenly some wisemen came to Jerusalem from the east	1 Dopo che Gesù nacque a Betlemme in Giudea, al tempo del re Erode, ecco giungere a Gerusalemme dall'oriente dei Magi,
2 asking, 'Where is the infant king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose and have come to do himhomage.'	2 i quali domandavano: "Dov'è il neonato re dei Giudei? Poiché abbiamo visto la sua stella in oriente e siamo venuti ad adorarlo".
3 When King Herod heard this he was perturbed, and so was the whole of Jerusalem.	3 All'udir ciò il re Erode fu preso da spavento e con lui tutta Gerusalemme.
4 He called together al the chief priests and the scribes of the people, and enquired of them where theChrist was to be born.	4 Convocò allora tutti i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi del popolo e domandò loro: "Dove dovrà nascere il Messia?".
5 They told him, 'At Bethlehem in Judaea, for this is what the prophet wrote:	5 Essi gli dissero: "A Betlemme di Giudea. Infatti così è stato scritto per mezzo del profeta:
6 And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are by no means the least among the leaders of Judah,for from you wil come a leader who wil shepherd my people Israel.'	6 E tu Betlemme, terra di Giuda, non sei la più piccola fra i capoluoghi di Giuda. Da te uscirà un capo che pascerà il mio popolo, Israele".
7 Then Herod summoned the wise men to see him privately. He asked them the exact date on which thestar had appeared	7 Allora Erode chiamò segretamente i Magi e chiese ad essi informazioni sul tempo esatto dell'apparizione della stella;
8 and sent them on to Bethlehem with the words, 'Go and find out all about the child, and when you havefound him, let me know, so that I too may go and do him homage.'	8 quindi li inviò a Betlemme, dicendo: "Andate e fate accurate ricerche del bambino; qualora lo troviate, fatemelo sapere, in modo che anch'io possa andare ad adorarlo".
9 Having listened to what the king had to say, they set out. And suddenly the star they had seen risingwent forward and halted over the place where the child was.	9 Essi, udite le raccomandazioni del re, si misero in cammino. Ed ecco: la stella che avevano visto in oriente li precedeva, finché non andò a fermarsi sopra il luogo dove si trovava il bambino.
10 The sight of the star fil ed them with delight,	10 Al vedere la stella furono ripieni di straordinaria allegrezza;
11 and going into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and fal ing to their knees they didhim homage. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.	11 ed entrati nella casa videro il bambino con Maria sua madre e si prostrarono davanti a lui in adorazione. Poi aprirono i loro scrigni e gli offrirono in dono oro, incenso e mirra.
12 But they were given a warning in a dream not to go back to Herod, and returned to their own countryby a different way.	12 Quindi, avvertiti in sogno di non passare da Erode, per un'altra via fecero ritorno al proprio paese.
13 After they had left, suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, 'Get up,take the child and his mother with you, and escape into Egypt, and stay there until I tel you, because Herodintends to search for the child and do away with him.'	13 Dopo la loro partenza, ecco che un angelo del Signore apparve in sogno a Giuseppe e gli disse: "Su, àlzati, prendi con te il bambino e sua madre e fuggi in Egitto e rimani lì fino a mio nuovo avviso. Erode infatti è in cerca del bambino per ucciderlo".
14 So Joseph got up and, taking the child and his mother with him, left that night for Egypt,	14 Egli si alzò, prese con sé il bambino e sua madre, nella notte, e partì per l'Egitto.
15 where he stayed until Herod was dead. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken through theprophet: I cal ed my son out of Egypt.	15 Lì rimase fino alla morte di Erode. Questo affinché si adempisse quanto fu annunciato dal Signore per mezzo del profeta che dice: Dall'Egitto ho richiamato mio figlio.
16 Herod was furious on realising that he had been fooled by the wise men, and in Bethlehem and itssurrounding district he had al the male children killed who were two years old or less, reckoning by the date hehad been careful to ask the wise men.	16 Allora Erode, vistosi ingannato dai Magi, si adirò fortemente e mandò ad uccidere tutti i bambini di Betlemme e dei dintorni, dai due anni in giù, in considerazione del tempo preciso indicatogli dai Magi.
17 Then were fulfilled the words spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:	17 Allora si adempì quanto fu detto dal profeta Geremia:
18 A voice is heard in Ramah, lamenting and weeping bitterly: it is Rachel weeping for her children,refusing to be comforted because they are no more.	18 Una voce s'è udita in Rama, pianto e lamento copioso; Rachele piange i suoi figli e non si vuole consolare, perché non sono più.
19 After Herod's death, suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt	19 Dopo la morte di Erode, ecco che un angelo del Signore apparve in sogno a Giuseppe in Egitto
20 and said, 'Get up, take the child and his mother with you and go back to the land of Israel, for thosewho wanted to kil the child are dead.'	20 e gli disse: "A'lzati, prendi con te il bambino e sua madre e va' nella terra d'Israele; sono morti infatti quelli che insidiavano la vita del bambino".
21 So Joseph got up and, taking the child and his mother with him, went back to the land of Israel.	21 Egli si alzò, prese con sé il bambino e sua madre e s'incamminò verso la terra d'Israele.
22 But when he learnt that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod as ruler of Judaea he was afraid togo there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the region of Galilee.	22 Ma quando seppe che in Giudea regnava Archelao, successo ad Erode suo padre, ebbe paura di recarsi là. Avvertito però in sogno, se ne andò nella regione della Galilea,
23 There he settled in a town cal ed Nazareth. In this way the words spoken through the prophets were tobe fulfil ed: He wil be cal ed a Nazarene.	23 e giunto là, si stabilì nella città chiamata Nazaret. Ciò affinché si adempisse il detto dei profeti: Sarà chiamato Nazoreo.
