NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
1 After Jesus had been born at Bethlehem in Judaea during the reign of King Herod, suddenly some wisemen came to Jerusalem from the east1 Cum autem natus esset Iesus in Bethlehem Iudaeae in diebus Herodis regis,ecce Magi ab oriente venerunt Hierosolymam
2 asking, 'Where is the infant king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose and have come to do himhomage.'2 dicentes: “ Ubi est, qui natusest, rex Iudaeorum? Vidimus enim stellam eius in oriente et venimus adorare eum”.
3 When King Herod heard this he was perturbed, and so was the whole of Jerusalem.3 Audiens autem Herodes rex turbatus est et omnis Hierosolyma cum illo;
4 He called together al the chief priests and the scribes of the people, and enquired of them where theChrist was to be born.4 et congregans omnes principes sacerdotum et scribas populi, sciscitabatur ab eisubi Christus nasceretur.
5 They told him, 'At Bethlehem in Judaea, for this is what the prophet wrote:5 At illi dixerunt ei: “ In Bethlehem Iudaeae. Sicenim scriptum est per prophetam:
6 And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are by no means the least among the leaders of Judah,for from you wil come a leader who wil shepherd my people Israel.'6 "Et tu, Bethlehem terra Iudae,
nequaquam minima es in principibus Iudae;
ex te enim exiet dux,
qui reget populum meum Israel" ”.
7 Then Herod summoned the wise men to see him privately. He asked them the exact date on which thestar had appeared7 Tunc Herodes, clam vocatis Magis, diligenter didicit ab eis tempus stellae,quae apparuit eis;
8 and sent them on to Bethlehem with the words, 'Go and find out all about the child, and when you havefound him, let me know, so that I too may go and do him homage.'8 et mittens illos in Bethlehem dixit: “ Ite et interrogatediligenter de puero; et cum inveneritis, renuntiate mihi, ut et ego veniensadorem eum ”.
9 Having listened to what the king had to say, they set out. And suddenly the star they had seen risingwent forward and halted over the place where the child was.9 Qui cum audissent regem, abierunt. Et ecce stella, quam viderant in oriente,antecedebat eos, usque dum veniens staret supra, ubi erat puer.
10 The sight of the star fil ed them with delight,10 Videntesautem stellam gavisi sunt gaudio magno valde.
11 and going into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and fal ing to their knees they didhim homage. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.11 Et intrantes domum videruntpuerum cum Maria matre eius, et procidentes adoraverunt eum; et apertisthesauris suis, obtulerunt ei munera, aurum et tus et myrrham.
12 But they were given a warning in a dream not to go back to Herod, and returned to their own countryby a different way.12 Et responsoaccepto in somnis, ne redirent ad Herodem, per aliam viam reversi sunt inregionem suam.
13 After they had left, suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, 'Get up,take the child and his mother with you, and escape into Egypt, and stay there until I tel you, because Herodintends to search for the child and do away with him.'13 Qui cum recessissent, ecce angelus Domini apparet in somnis Ioseph dicens:“ Surge et accipe puerum et matrem eius et fuge in Aegyptum et esto ibi, usquedum dicam tibi; futurum est enim ut Herodes quaerat puerum ad perdendum eum ”.
14 So Joseph got up and, taking the child and his mother with him, left that night for Egypt,14 Qui consurgens accepit puerum et matrem eius nocte et recessit in Aegyptum
15 where he stayed until Herod was dead. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken through theprophet: I cal ed my son out of Egypt.15 et erat ibi usque ad obitum Herodis, ut adimpleretur, quod dictum est a Dominoper prophetam dicentem:
“ Ex Aegypto vocavi filium meum ”.
16 Herod was furious on realising that he had been fooled by the wise men, and in Bethlehem and itssurrounding district he had al the male children killed who were two years old or less, reckoning by the date hehad been careful to ask the wise men.16 Tunc Herodes videns quoniam illusus esset a Magis, iratus est valde etmittens occidit omnes pueros, qui erant in Bethlehem et in omnibus finibus eius,a bimatu et infra, secundum tempus, quod exquisierat a Magis.
17 Then were fulfilled the words spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:17 Tunc adimpletumest, quod dictum est per Ieremiam prophetam dicentem:
18 A voice is heard in Ramah, lamenting and weeping bitterly: it is Rachel weeping for her children,refusing to be comforted because they are no more.18 “ Vox in Rama audita est,
ploratus et ululatus multus:
Rachel plorans filios suos,
et noluit consolari, quia non sunt ”.
19 After Herod's death, suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt19 Defuncto autem Herode, ecce apparet angelus Domini in somnis Ioseph inAegypto
20 and said, 'Get up, take the child and his mother with you and go back to the land of Israel, for thosewho wanted to kil the child are dead.'20 dicens: “ Surge et accipe puerum et matrem eius et vade in terramIsrael; defuncti sunt enim, qui quaerebant animam pueri ”.
21 So Joseph got up and, taking the child and his mother with him, went back to the land of Israel.21 Qui surgensaccepit puerum et matrem eius et venit in terram Israel.
22 But when he learnt that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod as ruler of Judaea he was afraid togo there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the region of Galilee.22 Audiens autem quia Archelaus regnaret in Iudaea pro Herode patre suo, timuitilluc ire; et admonitus in somnis, secessit in partes Galilaeae
23 There he settled in a town cal ed Nazareth. In this way the words spoken through the prophets were tobe fulfil ed: He wil be cal ed a Nazarene.23 et venienshabitavit in civitate, quae vocatur Nazareth, ut adimpleretur, quod dictum estper Prophetas: “ Nazaraeus vocabitur ”.
