After Jesus had been born at Bethlehem in Judaea during the reign of King Herod, suddenly some wisemen came to Jerusalem from the east1 And so, when Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judah, in the days of king Herod, behold, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,
asking, 'Where is the infant king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose and have come to do himhomage.'2 saying: “Where is he who was born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and we have come to adore him.”
When King Herod heard this he was perturbed, and so was the whole of Jerusalem.3 Now king Herod, hearing this, was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
He called together al the chief priests and the scribes of the people, and enquired of them where theChrist was to be born.4 And gathering together all the leaders of the priests, and the scribes of the people, he consulted with them as to where the Christ would be born.
They told him, 'At Bethlehem in Judaea, for this is what the prophet wrote:5 And they said to him: “In Bethlehem of Judea. For so it has been written by the prophet:
And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are by no means the least among the leaders of Judah, for from you wil come a leader who wil shepherd my people Israel.'6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, the land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah. For from you shall go forth the ruler who shall guide my people Israel.’ ”
Then Herod summoned the wise men to see him privately. He asked them the exact date on which thestar had appeared7 Then Herod, quietly calling the Magi, diligently learned from them the time when the star appeared to them.
and sent them on to Bethlehem with the words, 'Go and find out all about the child, and when you havefound him, let me know, so that I too may go and do him homage.'8 And sending them into Bethlehem, he said: “Go and diligently ask questions about the boy. And when you have found him, report back to me, so that I, too, may come and adore him.”
Having listened to what the king had to say, they set out. And suddenly the star they had seen risingwent forward and halted over the place where the child was.9 And when they had heard the king, they went away. And behold, the star that they had seen in the east went before them, even until, arriving, it stood still above the place where the child was.
The sight of the star fil ed them with delight,10 Then, seeing the star, they were gladdened by a very great joy.
and going into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and fal ing to their knees they didhim homage. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.11 And entering the home, they found the boy with his mother Mary. And so, falling prostrate, they adored him. And opening their treasures, they offered him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
But they were given a warning in a dream not to go back to Herod, and returned to their own countryby a different way.12 And having received a response in sleep that they should not return to Herod, they went back by another way to their own region.
After they had left, suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, 'Get up,take the child and his mother with you, and escape into Egypt, and stay there until I tel you, because Herodintends to search for the child and do away with him.'13 And after they had gone away, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: “Rise up, and take the boy and his mother, and flee into Egypt. And remain there until I tell you. For it will happen that Herod will seek the boy to destroy him.”
So Joseph got up and, taking the child and his mother with him, left that night for Egypt,14 And getting up, he took the boy and his mother by night, and withdrew into Egypt.
where he stayed until Herod was dead. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken through theprophet: I cal ed my son out of Egypt.15 And he remained there, until the death of Herod, in order to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Out of Egypt, I called my son.”
Herod was furious on realising that he had been fooled by the wise men, and in Bethlehem and itssurrounding district he had al the male children killed who were two years old or less, reckoning by the date hehad been careful to ask the wise men.16 Then Herod, seeing that he had been fooled by the Magi, was very angry. And so he sent to kill all the boys who were in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years of age and under, according to the time that he had learned by questioning the Magi.
Then were fulfilled the words spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:17 Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled, saying:
A voice is heard in Ramah, lamenting and weeping bitterly: it is Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted because they are no more.18 “A voice has been heard in Ramah, great weeping and wailing: Rachel crying for her sons. And she was not willing to be consoled, because they were no more.”
After Herod's death, suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt19 Then, when Herod had passed away, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph in Egypt,
and said, 'Get up, take the child and his mother with you and go back to the land of Israel, for thosewho wanted to kil the child are dead.'20 saying: “Rise up, and take the boy and his mother, and go into the land of Israel. For those who were seeking the life of the boy have passed away.”
So Joseph got up and, taking the child and his mother with him, went back to the land of Israel.21 And rising up, he took the boy and his mother, and he went into the land of Israel.
But when he learnt that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod as ruler of Judaea he was afraid togo there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the region of Galilee.22 Then, hearing that Archelaus reigned in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned in sleep, he withdrew into parts of Galilee.
There he settled in a town cal ed Nazareth. In this way the words spoken through the prophets were tobe fulfil ed: He wil be cal ed a Nazarene.23 And arriving, he lived in a city which is called Nazareth, in order to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: “For he shall be called a Nazarene.”
