NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Disaster to the rebel ious, the befouled, the tyrannical city!1 Woe to the provoking, and redeemed city, the dove.
She has not listened to the cal , she has not bowed to correction, she has not trusted in Yahweh, shehas not drawn near to her God.2 She hath not hearkened to the voice, neither hath she received discipline: she hath not trusted in the Lord, she drew not near to her God.
The rulers she has are roaring lions, her judges are wolves of the wastelands which leave nothing overfor the morning,3 Her princes are in the midst of her as roaring lions: her judges are evening wolves, they left nothing for the morning.
her prophets are braggarts, impostors, her priests have profaned what is holy and violated the Law.4 Her prophets are senseless men without faith: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have acted unjustly against the law.
Yahweh the Upright is in her, he does no wrong; morning by morning he gives judgement, each dawnunfailingly (but the wrong-doer knows no shame).5 The just Lord is in the midst thereof, he will not do iniquity: in the morning, in the morning he will bring his judgment to light, and it shall not be hid: but the wicked man hath not known shame.
I have exterminated the nations, their corner-towers lie in ruins; I have emptied their streets, no onewalks through them; their cities have been destroyed and are now deserted and unpeopled.6 I have destroyed the nations, and their towers are beaten down: I have made their ways desert, so that there is none that passeth by: their cities are desolate, there is not a man remaining, nor any inhabitant.
I thought, 'At least you wil fear me, at least you wil bow to correction,' and none of the punishments Ibrought on them will disappear from their view. But no, it only made them more anxious to do whatever wascorrupt.7 I said: Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive correction: and her dwelling shall not perish, for all things wherein I have visited her: but they rose early and corrupted all their thoughts.
So wait for me -- declares Yahweh -- for the day when I rise as accuser, for I am determined to gatherthe nations, to assemble the kingdoms, and on you to vent my fury, the whole heat of my anger (for the wholeearth will be devoured by the fire of my jealousy).8 Wherefore expect me, saith the Lord, in the day of my resurrection that is to come, for my judgment is to assemble the Gentiles, and to gather the kingdoms: and to pour upon them my indignation, all my fierce anger: for with the fire of my jealousy shall all the earth be devoured.
Yes, then I shall purge the lips of the peoples, so that all may invoke the name of Yahweh and servehim shoulder to shoulder.9 Because then I will restore to the people a chosen lip, that all may call upon the name of the Lord, and may serve him with one shoulder.
From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia, my suppliants will bring me tribute.10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia, shall my suppliants the children of my dispersed people bring me an offering.
When that Day comes you wil never again be ashamed of al the deeds with which you once rebelledagainst me, for I shal rid you of those who exult in your pride; never again wil you strut on my holy mountain.11 In that day thou shalt not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee thy proud boasters, and thou shalt no more be lifted up because of my holy mountain.
But in you I shal leave surviving a humble and lowly people,12 And I will leave in the midst of thee a poor and needy people: and they shall hope in the name of the Lord.
and those who are left in Israel wil take refuge in the name of Yahweh. They will do no wrong, wil tellno lies; nor wil a deceitful tongue be found in their mouths. But they will be able to graze and rest with no one toalarm them.13 The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies, nor shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed, and shall lie down, and there shall be none to make them afraid.
Shout for joy, daughter of Zion, Israel, shout aloud! Rejoice, exult with al your heart, daughter ofJerusalem!14 Give praise, O daughter of Sion: shout, O Israel: be glad, and rejoice with all thy heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.
Yahweh has repealed your sentence; he has turned your enemy away. Yahweh is king among you,Israel, you have nothing more to fear.15 The Lord hath taken away thy judgment, he hath turned away thy enemies: the king of Israel the Lord is in the midst of thee, thou shalt fear evil no more.
When that Day comes, the message for Jerusalem wil be: Zion, have no fear, do not let your handsfal limp.16 In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Fear not: to Sion: Let not thy hands be weakened.
Yahweh your God is there with you, the warrior-Saviour. He will rejoice over you with happy song, hewil renew you by his love, he will dance with shouts of joy for you,17 The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty, he will save: he will rejoice over thee with gladness, he will be silent in his love, he will be joyful over thee in praise.
as on a day of festival. I have taken away your misfortune, no longer need you bear the disgrace of it.18 The triflers that were departed from the law, I will gather together, because they were of thee: that thou mayest no more suffer reproach for them.
I am taking action here and now against your oppressors. When that time comes I wil rescue thelame, and gather the strays, and I wil win them praise and renown when I restore their fortunes.19 Behold I will cut off all that have afflicted thee at that time: and I will save her that halteth, and will gather her that was cast out: and I will get them praise, and a name, in all the land where they had been put to confusion.
At that time I shal be your guide, at the time when I gather you in, I shall give you praise and renownamong all the peoples of the earth when I restore your fortunes under your own eyes, declares Yahweh.20 At that time, when I will bring you: and at the time that I will gather you: for I will give you a name, and praise among all the people of the earth, when I shall have brought back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.
