1 Yahweh spoke to Moses on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho, and said:	1 Il Signore nelle pianure di Moab, presso il Giordano di faccia a Gerico, disse a Mosè anche questo:
2 'Order the Israelites, from the heritage they possess, to give the Levites towns in which to live andpasture land round the towns. You wil give these to the Levites.	2 « Ordina ai figli d'Israele che nei loro possessi diano ai leviti
3 The towns must be their homes and the surrounding pasture land must be for their cattle, theirpossessions and all their animals.	3 delle città da abitarvi e i loro sobborghi all'intorno: le città per abitarvi; i sobborghi per i loro greggi e giumenti.
4 The pasture land surrounding the towns which you give to the Levites wil extend, from the wal s ofthe towns, for a thousand cubits al round.	4 Questi sobborghi si stenderanno da tutti i lati fuori delle mura della città per lo spazio di mille passi.
5 'Outside the town, measure two thousand cubits to the east, two thousand cubits to the south, twothousand cubits to the west and two thousand cubits to the north, the town lying in the centre; such wil be thepasture lands of these towns.	5 Vi saran due mila cubiti ad oriente, due mila a mezzodì, e verso il mare che guarda occidente, parimente due mila, e dalla parte di settentrione il medesimo spazio. Le città staranno nel mezzo, e al di fuori i sobborghi.
6 The towns you give to the Levites wil be six cities of refuge, ceded by you as sanctuary for those whocommit manslaughter; and you will give forty-two towns in addition.	6 Fra le città che darete ai leviti, sei saran destinate ad asilo dei fuggiaschi, per rifugio di chi avrà sparso del sangue. A queste aggiungerete altre quarantadue città,
7 Altogether you wil give the Levites forty-eight towns, with their pasture lands.	7 in tutto quarantotto città coi loro sobborghi.
8 Of the towns which you give from the Israelites' possessions, you wil give more from those who havemore, and less from those who have less. 9 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:	9 Il Signore disse a Mosè:
10 'Speak to the Israelites and say: "Once you have crossed the Jordan into Canaan,	10 « Parla ai figli d'Israele e di' loro: Quando, passato il Giordano, sarete entrati nella terra di Canaan,
11 you wil find towns, some of which you wil make into cities of refuge where those who haveaccidental y committed manslaughter can take sanctuary.	11 determinate quali città debbano servire di rifugio ai fuggiaschi che involontariamente avranno sparso il sangue.
12 These towns wil afford you refuge from the avenger of blood, so that the kil er will not be put todeath before standing trial before the community.	12 Quando il fuggiasco vi si sarà rifugiato il parente dell'ucciso non potrà ammazzarlo, finché non sia comparso davanti all'assemblea e non sia stata giudicata la sua causa.
13 Of the towns you give, six wil serve you as cities of refuge:	13 Di queste città da darsi a rifugio dei fuggiaschi,
14 as cities of refuge, you wil give three towns on the other side of the Jordan and wil give three townsin Canaan.	14 tre saranno al di là del Giordano, e tre nella terra di Canaan,
15 These six towns wil serve as refuge for the Israelites, for the foreigner and for the resident alien,where anyone who has accidental y kil ed someone can take sanctuary.	15 e tanto i figli d'Israele che i forestieri e i pellegrini, chiunque involontariamente ha sparso il sangue, vi potrà trovar rifugio.
16 "But if he has struck the person with an iron object so as to cause death, he is a murderer. Themurderer wil be put to death.	16 Se uno percuote con ferro, e il percosso muore, quel tale è omicida e dovrà morire.
17 If he has struck him with a stone meant for kil ing, and has kil ed him, he is a murderer. Themurderer wil be put to death.	17 Se uno scaglia un sasso, e il colpito muore, quel tale avrà pure la morte,
18 Or if he has struck him with a wooden instrument meant for kil ing, and has kil ed him, he is amurderer. The murderer will be put to death.	18 Se uno percosso col bastone muore, sarà vendicato col sangue di chi l'ha percosso.
19 The avenger of blood wil put the murderer to death. Whenever he finds him, he wil put him todeath.	19 Il parente dell'ucciso ucciderà l'omicida, l'ucciderà appena lo potrà aver nelle mani.
20 "If the killer has maliciously manhandled his victim, or thrown some lethal missile to strike him down,	20 Se uno per odio dà ad un altro una spinta, o con premeditazione gli getta addosso qualche cosa,
21 or out of enmity dealt him the death-blow with his fist, then he who struck the blow wil be put todeath; he is a murderer; the avenger of blood wil put him to death whenever he finds him.	21 O per inimicizia lo colpisce colla mano, e quello muore, chi ha colpito è reo d'omicidio: il parente dell'ucciso l'ammazzerà appena l'avrà nelle mani.
22 If, however, he has manhandled his victim by chance, without malice, or thrown some missile at himnot meaning to hit him	22 Ma se per caso, senza odio
23 or, without seeing him, dropped on him a stone meant for kil ing and so kil ed him, so long as hebore him no malice and wished him no harm,	23 e senza inimicizia avrà fatto le dette cose,
24 then the community will decide in accordance with these rules between the one who struck the blowand the avenger of blood,	24 ciò sarà stato provato davanti al popolo, e la causa sarà stata agitata tra chi ha percosso e il parente vendicatore dell'ucciso,
25 and wil save the kil er from the clutches of the avenger of blood. They will send him back to the cityof refuge where he had taken sanctuary, and there he wil stay until the death of the high priest who has beenanointed with the holy oil.	25 L'omicida sarà, come innocente, liberato dalle mani del vendicatore, e sarà ricondotto per sentenza nella città del suo rifugio, ove rimarrà finché non sia morto il sommo sacerdote, che è unto coll'olio santo.
26 Should the kil er leave the bounds of the city of refuge in which he has taken sanctuary	26 Ma se l'omicida, trovato fuori delle città destinate ai fuggiaschi,
27 and the avenger of blood encounter him outside the bounds of his city of refuge, the avenger ofblood may kil him without fear of reprisal;	27 sarà ucciso dal vindice del sangue, chi l'avrà ucciso sarà senza colpa,
28 since the kil er should stay in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest; only after the deathof the high priest is he free to go back to his own piece of property.	28 perchè l'omicida doveva starsene nella città fino alla morte del pontefice, e soltanto dopo la morte di luì può ritornare alla sua terra.
29 Such wil be the legal rule for you and your descendants, wherever you may live.	29 Queste ordinazioni varranno in perpetuo e saranno leggi in tutti i luoghi ove abiterete.
30 "In any case of homicide, the evidence of witnesses wil determine whether the kil er must be put todeath; but a single witness is not enough to sustain a capital charge.	30 L'omicida sarà punito in seguito alla deposizione di testimoni; nessuno sarà condannato dietro la deposizione di un solo testimonio.
31 You wil not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer condemned to death; he must die.	31 Non riceverete danaro dall'omicida: sarà fatto morire subito anche lui.
32 Nor wil you accept a ransom for anyone who, having taken sanctuary in his city or refuge, wishes tocome back and live at home before the death of the high priest.	32 Gli esuli e i fuggiaschi non potranno tornare in alcun modo nelle loro città avanti la morte del pontefice.
33 Do not profane the country you live in. Blood profanes the country and, for the country, the onlyexpiation for the blood shed in it is the blood of the man who shed it.	33 Non contaminate la terra dove abiterete: essa resta contaminata dal sangue degli innocenti e non può essere purificata se non col sangue di colui che avrà sparso quello d'un altro.
34 So do not defile the country which you live in and where I live; for I, Yahweh, live among theIsraelites." '	34 E così sarà purificata la vostra terra, mentre io dimoro con voi: io infatti sono il Signore che abito tra i figli d'Israele ».
