NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho, and said:	1 Il Signore disse ancora a Mosè nella steppa di Moab, presso il Giordano di Gerico:
2 'Order the Israelites, from the heritage they possess, to give the Levites towns in which to live andpasture land round the towns. You wil give these to the Levites.	2 "Ordina ai figli d'Israele che diano ai leviti, come parte del loro possesso, città da abitare e anche i pascoli intorno alle città.
3 The towns must be their homes and the surrounding pasture land must be for their cattle, theirpossessions and all their animals.	3 Avranno le città per abitare, i pascoli per le loro bestie, i loro beni, i loro animali.
4 The pasture land surrounding the towns which you give to the Levites wil extend, from the wal s ofthe towns, for a thousand cubits al round.	4 I pascoli delle città che darete ai leviti, dalle mura della città all'esterno, gireranno intorno per mille cubiti.
5 'Outside the town, measure two thousand cubits to the east, two thousand cubits to the south, twothousand cubits to the west and two thousand cubits to the north, the town lying in the centre; such wil be thepasture lands of these towns.	5 Misurerete all'esterno della città, nel lato orientale, duemila cubiti, nel lato meridionale duemila cubiti, nel lato occidentale duemila cubiti, nel lato settentrionale duemila cubiti, e la città sarà in mezzo: questi saranno per loro i pascoli della città.
6 The towns you give to the Levites wil be six cities of refuge, ceded by you as sanctuary for those whocommit manslaughter; and you will give forty-two towns in addition.	6 Le città date da voi ai leviti sono le sei città di rifugio che darete perché vi fugga l'omicida e, oltre a quelle, quarantadue città.
7 Altogether you wil give the Levites forty-eight towns, with their pasture lands.	7 Tutte le città che darete ai leviti saranno quarantotto, quelle e i loro pascoli.
8 Of the towns which you give from the Israelites' possessions, you wil give more from those who havemore, and less from those who have less. Each wil give some of his towns to the Levites, in proportion to theheritage he himself has received.'	8 Le città che darete proverranno dalla proprietà dei figli d'Israele: dal grande prenderete molto, dal piccolo poco. Ognuno, in base alla sua parte che ha ereditato, darà delle sue città ai leviti".
9 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:	9 Il Signore disse a Mosè:
10 'Speak to the Israelites and say: "Once you have crossed the Jordan into Canaan,	10 "Parla ai figli d'Israele e di' loro: Poiché passate il Giordano verso la terra di Canaan,
11 you wil find towns, some of which you wil make into cities of refuge where those who haveaccidental y committed manslaughter can take sanctuary.	11 designerete delle città che saranno per voi città di rifugio, dove fuggirà l'omicida che ha colpito qualcuno per inavvertenza.
12 These towns wil afford you refuge from the avenger of blood, so that the kil er will not be put todeath before standing trial before the community.	12 Le città saranno per voi un rifugio dal vendicatore e l'omicida non morirà finché non sarà stato davanti alla comunità in giudizio.
13 Of the towns you give, six wil serve you as cities of refuge:	13 Le città che darete saranno per voi sei città di rifugio.
14 as cities of refuge, you wil give three towns on the other side of the Jordan and wil give three townsin Canaan.	14 Darete tre città al di là del Giordano e tre città nella terra di Canaan: saranno città di rifugio.
15 These six towns wil serve as refuge for the Israelites, for the foreigner and for the resident alien,where anyone who has accidental y kil ed someone can take sanctuary.	15 Per i figli d'Israele, per l'ospite e per chi risiede in mezzo a loro, quelle saranno sei città di rifugio, perché vi fugga chiunque ha colpito qualcuno per inavvertenza.
16 "But if he has struck the person with an iron object so as to cause death, he is a murderer. Themurderer wil be put to death.	16 Ma se uno ha colpito un altro con un oggetto di ferro e quello muore, è un omicida e l'omicida sarà messo a morte.
17 If he has struck him with a stone meant for kil ing, and has kil ed him, he is a murderer. Themurderer wil be put to death.	17 Se l'ha colpito con una pietra che aveva in mano, atta a dare la morte, e il colpito è morto, è un omicida e l'omicida sarà messo a morte.
18 Or if he has struck him with a wooden instrument meant for kil ing, and has kil ed him, he is amurderer. The murderer will be put to death.	18 Se l'ha colpito con un oggetto di legno che aveva in mano, atto a causare la morte ed è morto, è un omicida e l'omicida sarà messo a morte.
19 The avenger of blood wil put the murderer to death. Whenever he finds him, he wil put him todeath.	19 E' il vendicatore del sangue che farà morire l'omicida: quando lo incontrerà, lo farà morire.
20 "If the killer has maliciously manhandled his victim, or thrown some lethal missile to strike him down,	20 Se uno per odio urta un altro o gli scaglia contro qualcosa con premeditazione e quello muore,
21 or out of enmity dealt him the death-blow with his fist, then he who struck the blow wil be put todeath; he is a murderer; the avenger of blood wil put him to death whenever he finds him.	21 o per ostilità lo colpisce con la propria mano e lo fa morire, chi colpisce sarà messo a morte, è un omicida; il vendicatore del sangue farà morire l'omicida quando l'incontrerà.
22 If, however, he has manhandled his victim by chance, without malice, or thrown some missile at himnot meaning to hit him	22 Ma se per caso e non per ostilità lo ha urtato o gli ha scagliato qualcosa contro senza pensarci,
23 or, without seeing him, dropped on him a stone meant for kil ing and so kil ed him, so long as hebore him no malice and wished him no harm,	23 o se gli ha fatto cadere sopra una pietra con la quale poteva morire, senza vedere, ed è morto, e lui non gli era nemico e non cercava il suo male,
24 then the community will decide in accordance with these rules between the one who struck the blowand the avenger of blood,	24 la comunità giudicherà tra chi ha colpito e il vendicatore del sangue secondo queste regole:
25 and wil save the kil er from the clutches of the avenger of blood. They will send him back to the cityof refuge where he had taken sanctuary, and there he wil stay until the death of the high priest who has beenanointed with the holy oil.	25 la comunità salverà l'omicida dalla mano del vendicatore del sangue e lo farà ritornare nella città di rifugio, nella quale era fuggito, e vi risiederà fino alla morte del grande sacerdote, unto con l'olio santo.
26 Should the kil er leave the bounds of the city of refuge in which he has taken sanctuary	26 Ma se l'omicida uscirà dal confine della città del suo rifugio, nella quale era fuggito,
27 and the avenger of blood encounter him outside the bounds of his city of refuge, the avenger ofblood may kil him without fear of reprisal;	27 e il vendicatore del sangue lo troverà al di fuori del confine della città del suo rifugio e ucciderà l'omicida, non c'è sangue su di lui,
28 since the kil er should stay in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest; only after the deathof the high priest is he free to go back to his own piece of property.	28 perché quello doveva risiedere nella città del suo rifugio fino alla morte del gran sacerdote; e dopo la morte del gran sacerdote l'omicida tornerà alla terra che possiede.
29 Such wil be the legal rule for you and your descendants, wherever you may live.	29 Queste saranno per voi le prescrizioni giuridiche, secondo le vostre generazioni, in tutte le vostre residenze.
30 "In any case of homicide, the evidence of witnesses wil determine whether the kil er must be put todeath; but a single witness is not enough to sustain a capital charge.	30 Per chiunque colpisce una persona, è secondo i testimoni che si ucciderà l'omicida, ma un solo testimone non può deporre contro uno per farlo morire.
31 You wil not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer condemned to death; he must die.	31 Non prenderete riscatto per la vita di un omicida che ha colpa per morire, perché sarà messo a morte.
32 Nor wil you accept a ransom for anyone who, having taken sanctuary in his city or refuge, wishes tocome back and live at home before the death of the high priest.	32 Non prenderete riscatto per chi fugge dalla città del suo rifugio, per farlo tornare a risiedere nella terra fino alla morte del sacerdote.
33 Do not profane the country you live in. Blood profanes the country and, for the country, the onlyexpiation for the blood shed in it is the blood of the man who shed it.	33 Non contaminerete la terra nella quale siete, perché il sangue contamina la terra, e per la terra non si può espiare per il sangue che vi fu versato se non con il sangue di chi lo ha versato.
34 So do not defile the country which you live in and where I live; for I, Yahweh, live among theIsraelites." '	34 Non renderai impura la terra nella quale abitate, quella nella quale io abito, perché io, il Signore, abito in mezzo ai figli d'Israele".
