NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho, and said:	1 Yahvé parla à Moïse, dans les Steppes de Moab, près du Jourdain vers Jéricho. Il dit:
2 'Order the Israelites, from the heritage they possess, to give the Levites towns in which to live andpasture land round the towns. You wil give these to the Levites.	2 "Ordonne aux Israélites de donner aux Lévites, sur l'héritage qu'ils possèdent, des villes pourqu'ils y demeurent et des pâturages autour de villes. Vous les donnerez aux Lévites.
3 The towns must be their homes and the surrounding pasture land must be for their cattle, theirpossessions and all their animals.	3 Les villes seront leur demeure et les pâturages attenants seront pour leur bétail, leurs biens ettoutes leurs bêtes.
4 The pasture land surrounding the towns which you give to the Levites wil extend, from the wal s ofthe towns, for a thousand cubits al round.	4 Les pâturages attenant aux villes que vous donnerez aux Lévites s'étendront, à partir de lamuraille de la ville, sur mille coudées alentour.
5 'Outside the town, measure two thousand cubits to the east, two thousand cubits to the south, twothousand cubits to the west and two thousand cubits to the north, the town lying in the centre; such wil be thepasture lands of these towns.	5 Vous mesurerez, hors de la ville, 2.000 coudées pour le côté oriental, 2.000 coudées pour le côtéméridional, 2.000 coudées pour le côté occidental, 2.000 coudées pour le côté septentrional, la ville étant aucentre, ce seront les pâturages de ces villes.
6 The towns you give to the Levites wil be six cities of refuge, ceded by you as sanctuary for those whocommit manslaughter; and you will give forty-two towns in addition.	6 Les villes que vous donnerez aux Lévites seront les six villes de refuge, cédées par vous pour quele meurtrier puisse s'y enfuir; mais vous donnerez en plus 42 villes.
7 Altogether you wil give the Levites forty-eight towns, with their pasture lands.	7 Vous donnerez en tout aux Lévites 48 villes, les villes avec leurs pâturages.
8 Of the towns which you give from the Israelites' possessions, you wil give more from those who havemore, and less from those who have less. Each wil give some of his towns to the Levites, in proportion to theheritage he himself has received.'	8 Ces villes que vous donnerez sur la possession des Israélites, vous les prendrez en plus grandnombre à celui qui a beaucoup, en plus petit nombre à celui qui a peu. Chacun donnera de ses villes aux Lévitesen proportion de l'héritage qu'il aura reçu."
9 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:	9 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:
10 'Speak to the Israelites and say: "Once you have crossed the Jordan into Canaan,	10 "Parle ainsi aux Israélites. Quand vous aurez passé le Jourdain pour gagner la terre de Canaan,
11 you wil find towns, some of which you wil make into cities of refuge where those who haveaccidental y committed manslaughter can take sanctuary.	11 vous trouverez des villes dont vous ferez des villes de refuge, où puisse s'enfuir le meurtrier quia frappé quelqu'un par inadvertance.
12 These towns wil afford you refuge from the avenger of blood, so that the kil er will not be put todeath before standing trial before the community.	12 Ces villes vous serviront de refuge contre le vengeur du sang, et le meurtrier ne devra pasmourir avant d'avoir comparu en jugement devant la communauté.
13 Of the towns you give, six wil serve you as cities of refuge:	13 Les villes que vous donnerez seront pour vous six villes de refuge:
14 as cities of refuge, you wil give three towns on the other side of the Jordan and wil give three townsin Canaan.	14 les trois que vous donnerez au-delà du Jourdain et les trois que vous donnerez dans le pays deCanaan seront des villes de refuge.
15 These six towns wil serve as refuge for the Israelites, for the foreigner and for the resident alien,where anyone who has accidental y kil ed someone can take sanctuary.	15 Pour les Israélites comme pour l'étranger et pour l'hôte qui vivent chez vous, ces six villesserviront de refuge, où puisse s'enfuir quiconque a frappé quelqu'un involontairement.
16 "But if he has struck the person with an iron object so as to cause death, he is a murderer. Themurderer wil be put to death.	16 Mais s'il l'a frappé avec un objet de fer et qu'il ait ainsi causé sa mort, c'est un meurtrier. Lemeurtrier sera mis à mort.
17 If he has struck him with a stone meant for kil ing, and has kil ed him, he is a murderer. Themurderer wil be put to death.	17 S'il l'a frappé avec une pierre propre à tuer et s'il l'a tué, c'est un meurtrier. Le meurtrier sera misà mort.
18 Or if he has struck him with a wooden instrument meant for kil ing, and has kil ed him, he is amurderer. The murderer will be put to death.	18 Ou bien s'il l'a frappé avec un outil de bois propre à tuer et s'il l'a tué, c'est un meurtrier. Lemeurtrier sera mis à mort.
19 The avenger of blood wil put the murderer to death. Whenever he finds him, he wil put him todeath.	19 C'est le vengeur du sang qui mettra à mort le meurtrier. Quand il le rencontrera, il le mettra àmort.
20 "If the killer has maliciously manhandled his victim, or thrown some lethal missile to strike him down,	20 Si le meurtrier a bousculé la victime par haine, ou si pour l'atteindre il lui a lancé un projectilemortel,
21 or out of enmity dealt him the death-blow with his fist, then he who struck the blow wil be put todeath; he is a murderer; the avenger of blood wil put him to death whenever he finds him.	21 ou si par inimitié il lui a porté des coups de poing mortels, celui qui a frappé doit mourir; c'estun meurtrier que le vengeur du sang mettra à mort quand il le rencontrera.
22 If, however, he has manhandled his victim by chance, without malice, or thrown some missile at himnot meaning to hit him	22 Mais s'il a bousculé la victime fortuitement, sans inimitié, ou s'il a lancé sur elle quelqueprojectile, sans chercher à l'atteindre,
23 or, without seeing him, dropped on him a stone meant for kil ing and so kil ed him, so long as hebore him no malice and wished him no harm,	23 ou si sans la voir il a fait tomber sur elle une pierre propre à tuer et a ainsi causé sa mort, alorsqu'il n'avait contre elle aucune haine et ne lui voulait aucun mal,
24 then the community will decide in accordance with these rules between the one who struck the blowand the avenger of blood,	24 la communauté jugera, selon ces règles, entre celui qui a frappé et le vengeur du sang,
25 and wil save the kil er from the clutches of the avenger of blood. They will send him back to the cityof refuge where he had taken sanctuary, and there he wil stay until the death of the high priest who has beenanointed with the holy oil.	25 et sauvera le meurtrier de la main du vengeur du sang. Elle le fera retourner dans la ville derefuge où il s'était enfui, et il y demeurera jusqu'à la mort du grand prêtre qui a été oint de l'huile sainte.
26 Should the kil er leave the bounds of the city of refuge in which he has taken sanctuary	26 Si le meurtrier vient à sortir du territoire de la ville de refuge où il s'est enfui,
27 and the avenger of blood encounter him outside the bounds of his city of refuge, the avenger ofblood may kil him without fear of reprisal;	27 et que le vengeur du sang le rencontre hors du territoire de sa ville de refuge, le vengeur du sangpourra le tuer sans crainte de représailles:
28 since the kil er should stay in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest; only after the deathof the high priest is he free to go back to his own piece of property.	28 car le meurtrier doit rester dans sa ville de refuge jusqu'à la mort du grand prêtre; c'est après lamort du grand prêtre qu'il pourra retourner au pays où il a son domaine.
29 Such wil be the legal rule for you and your descendants, wherever you may live.	29 Ce sera règle de droit pour vous et pour vos générations, partout où vous habiterez.
30 "In any case of homicide, the evidence of witnesses wil determine whether the kil er must be put todeath; but a single witness is not enough to sustain a capital charge.	30 En toute affaire d'homicide, c'est sur la déposition de témoins que le meurtrier sera mis à mort;mais un témoin unique ne pourra porter une accusation capitale.
31 You wil not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer condemned to death; he must die.	31 Vous n'accepterez pas de rançon pour la vie d'un meurtrier passible de mort; car il doit mourir.
32 Nor wil you accept a ransom for anyone who, having taken sanctuary in his city or refuge, wishes tocome back and live at home before the death of the high priest.	32 Vous n'accepterez pas de rançon de quelqu'un qui, s'étant enfui dans sa ville de refuge, veutrevenir habiter son pays avant la mort du grand prêtre.
33 Do not profane the country you live in. Blood profanes the country and, for the country, the onlyexpiation for the blood shed in it is the blood of the man who shed it.	33 Vous ne profanerez pas le pays où vous êtes. C'est le sang qui profane le pays et il n'y a pour lepays d'autre expiation du sang versé que par le sang de celui qui l'a versé.
34 So do not defile the country which you live in and where I live; for I, Yahweh, live among theIsraelites." '	34 Tu ne rendras pas impur le pays où vous habitez et au milieu duquel j'habite. Car moi, Yahvé,j'habite au milieu des Israélites."
