NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 The king of Arad, the Canaanite living in the Negeb, learned that Israel was coming by way ofAtharim. He attacked Israel and took some prisoners.	1 Il cananeo re di Arad, che risiede nel Negheb, sentì che Israele era arrivato per il cammino di Atarim, e combatté contro Israele facendone dei prigionieri.
2 Israel then made this vow to Yahweh, 'If you deliver this people into my power, I shal curse theirtowns with destruction.'	2 Israele fece un voto al Signore e disse: "Se darai in mano mia questo popolo, voterò allo sterminio le loro città".
3 Yahweh heard Israel's words and delivered the Canaanites into their power, and they destroyed themin accordance with their curse. Hence the place was given the name Hormah.	3 Il Signore ascoltò la voce d'Israele e gli mise nelle mani i Cananei; Israele votò allo sterminio loro e le loro città, e quel luogo fu chiamato Corma.
4 They left Mount Hor by the road to the Sea of Suph, to skirt round Edom. On the way the people lostpatience.	4 Tolsero le tende dal monte Or, dirigendosi verso il Mar Rosso, per aggirare la terra di Edom: e l'animo del popolo si rattristò nel cammino.
5 They spoke against God and against Moses, 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in the desert?For there is neither food nor water here; we are sick of this meagre diet.'	5 Il popolo parlò contro Dio e contro Mosè: "Perché ci hai fatti uscire dall'Egitto per morire nel deserto? Qui non c'è né pane né acqua e siamo nauseati di un cibo così inconsistente".
6 At this, God sent fiery serpents among the people; their bite brought death to many in Israel.	6 Il Signore allora inviò al popolo i serpenti che bruciano: morsero il popolo e molta gente d'Israele morì.
7 The people came and said to Moses, 'We have sinned by speaking against Yahweh and against you.Intercede for us with Yahweh to save us from these serpents.' Moses interceded for the people,	7 Il popolo venne da Mosè e disse: "Abbiamo peccato, perché abbiamo parlato contro il Signore e contro te. Intercedi presso il Signore e allontana da noi il serpente". Mosè intercedette per il popolo.
8 and Yahweh replied, 'Make a fiery serpent and raise it as a standard. Anyone who is bitten and looksat it wil survive.'	8 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Fatti un serpente e mettilo sopra un'asta: chiunque sarà morso e lo guarderà, vivrà".
9 Moses then made a serpent out of bronze and raised it as a standard, and anyone who was bitten bya serpent and looked at the bronze serpent survived.	9 Mosè fece un serpente di bronzo e lo mise su un'asta; se un serpente mordeva un uomo e costui guardava il serpente di bronzo, viveva.
10 The Israelites set out and camped at Oboth.	10 I figli d'Israele tolsero le tende e si accamparono in Obot.
11 Then they left Oboth and camped at Iye-Abarim, in the desert on the eastern border of Moab.	11 Partirono da Obot e si accamparono a Iie-Abarim, nel deserto che è di fronte a Moab, dal lato dove sorge il sole.
12 They set out from there and camped in the gorge of the Zered.	12 Partirono di là e si accamparono presso il torrente Zered.
13 They set out from there and camped on the other side of the Arnon. This gorge in the desert beginsin the territory of the Amorites. For the Arnon is the frontier of Moab, between the Moabites and the Amorites.	13 Di là partirono e posero il campo oltre l'Arnon, che scorre nel deserto e proviene dal confine degli Amorrei, perché l'Arnon è il confine di Moab, tra Moab e gli Amorrei.
14 That is why it says in the Book of the Wars of Yahweh: '. . .Waheb near Suphah and the gorges ofthe Arnon	14 Per questo è detto nel libro delle guerre del Signore: "...Vaeb in Sufa e le sponde dell'Arnon,
15 and the slope of the ravine running down to the site of Ar and over against the frontier of Moab.'	15 il pendio delle sponde che piega verso l'abitato di Ar e si appoggia al confine di Moab".
16 And from there they went to Beer, that being the well in connection with which Yahweh had said toMoses, 'Cal the people together and I wil give them water.'	16 Di là andarono fino a Beer: è quel pozzo di cui il Signore aveva detto a Mosè: "Raduna il popolo e darò loro dell'acqua".
17 Then it was that Israel sang this song: Spring up, wel ! Sing out for the wel ,	17 Allora Israele compose questa canzone: "Sgorga, o pozzo: cantatelo;
18 sunk by the princes, dug by the people's leaders with the sceptre, with their staves! -and from thedesert to Mattanah,	18 pozzo che i prìncipi hanno scavato, che i nobili del popolo hanno forato con lo scettro, con il loro bastone". E dal deserto andarono a Mattana,
19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,	19 da Mattana a Nacaliel, da Nacaliel a Bamot,
20 and from Bamoth to the val ey that opens into the country of Moab, towards the heights of Pisgahoverlooking the desert.	20 e da Bamot alla valle che è nei campi di Moab: la cima del Pisga domina di fronte al deserto.
21 Israel sent messengers to say to Sihon king of the Amorites,	21 Israele inviò messaggeri a Sicon, re amorreo, a dire:
22 'I wish to pass through your country. We shall not stray into the fields or vineyards; we shall not drinkthe water from the wells; we shal keep to the king's highway until we have passed through your territory.'	22 "Lasciami passare nella tua terra: non piegheremo nel campo e nella vigna, non berremo acqua di pozzo: andremo per la strada reale, finché passeremo il tuo confine".
23 But Sihon would not give Israel leave to pass through his country. He assembled al his people,marched into the desert to meet Israel, and reached Jahaz, where he gave battle to Israel.	23 Ma Sicon non fece passare Israele per il suo confine. Sicon riunì il suo popolo e uscì incontro a Israele nel deserto. Arrivò a Iaaz e combatté contro Israele.
24 Israel defeated him by force of arms and conquered his country from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as faras the Ammonites, for Jazer marked the Ammonite frontier.	24 Israele lo colpì a fil di spada e conquistò la sua terra dall'Arnon fino allo Iabbok, fino ai confini degli Ammoniti, perché forte era il confine degli Ammoniti.
25 Israel took all these towns. Israel occupied al the Amorite towns, Heshbon and al its dependencies,	25 Israele prese tutte quelle città e dimorò in tutte le città amorree, in Chesbon e in tutte le sue dipendenze,
26 Heshbon being the capital of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had made war on the first king ofMoab and captured al his territory as far as the Arnon.	26 perché Chesbon è una città di Sicon, re amorreo: egli aveva combattuto contro il precedente re di Moab e gli aveva preso di mano tutta la sua terra fino all'Arnon.
27 Hence the poets say: Come to Heshbon! Let the city of Sihon be rebuilt on firm foundations!	27 Per questo i poeti dicono: "Venite a Chesbon, si edifichi e stabilisca la città di Sicon,
28 For fire has burst from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon, devouring Ar of Moab, engulfing theheights of the Arnon.	28 perché fuoco è uscito da Chesbon, fiamma dalla città di Sicon: ha divorato Ar di Moab, i padroni delle alture dell'Arnon.
29 Oh, unhappy Moab! People of Chemosh, you are lost! He has resigned his sons as fugitives, and hisdaughters as prisoners to Sihon king of the Amorites.	29 Guai a te, Moab, sei perduto, popolo di Camos: ha dato i suoi figli alla fuga, le sue figlie alla schiavitù, a Sicon, re amorreo.
30 Their posterity has been destroyed from Heshbon al the way to Dibon, and we have lit a fire all theway from Nophah to Medeba.	30 Li abbiamo colpiti con frecce, è perduto da Chesbon fino a Dibon, abbiamo devastato fino a Nofach, che è presso Madaba".
31 Thus Israel occupied the Amorites' territory.	31 Israele dimorò nella terra dell'Amorreo.
32 Moses then sent men to reconnoitre Jazer, and Israel took it and its dependencies, evicting theAmorites who lived there.	32 Poi Mosè mandò a esplorare Iazer: presero le sue dipendenze e scacciarono gli Amorrei che vi si trovavano.
33 They then turned and marched on Bashan. Og king of Bashan and al his people marched to meetthem and give battle at Edrei.	33 Poi cambiarono direzione e salirono per la strada di Basan. Uscì Og, re di Basan, con tutto il suo popolo contro di loro per far guerra in Edrei.
34 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Do not be afraid of him, for I have put him, al his people and his country atyour mercy. Treat him as you treated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.'	34 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Non aver paura di lui, perché te l'ho dato in mano, lui e tutto il suo popolo con la sua terra: farai a lui come hai fatto a Sicon, re amorreo che sta in Chesbon".
35 So they pressed their attack against him, his sons and al his people until there was no one left alive.And they took possession of his country.	35 E colpirono lui, i suoi figli e tutto il suo popolo, finché restò un superstite, e presero possesso della sua terra.
