NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 The king of Arad, the Canaanite living in the Negeb, learned that Israel was coming by way ofAtharim. He attacked Israel and took some prisoners.	1 Le Roi d’Arad, un Cananéen qui habitait le Négueb, apprit qu’Israël arrivait par le chemin d’Atarim. Il attaqua Israël et lui fit des prisonniers.
2 Israel then made this vow to Yahweh, 'If you deliver this people into my power, I shal curse theirtowns with destruction.'	2 Alors Israël fit un vœu à Yahvé: “Si tu me livres ce peuple, je vouerai ses villes à l’anathème.”
3 Yahweh heard Israel's words and delivered the Canaanites into their power, and they destroyed themin accordance with their curse. Hence the place was given the name Hormah.	3 Yahvé exauça Israël et lui livra les Cananéens. On les voua, eux et leurs villes, à l’anathème et l’on donna à ce lieu le nom de Horma.
4 They left Mount Hor by the road to the Sea of Suph, to skirt round Edom. On the way the people lostpatience.	4 Ils quittèrent Hor-la-Montagne par le chemin de la mer de Souf pour contourner le pays d’Édom. En chemin le peuple perdit patience,
5 They spoke against God and against Moses, 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in the desert?For there is neither food nor water here; we are sick of this meagre diet.'	5 il murmura contre Dieu et contre Moïse: “Pourquoi nous avoir fait monter d’Égypte pour nous faire mourir dans ce désert, sans pain et sans eau? Nous en avons assez de cette triste nourriture.”
6 At this, God sent fiery serpents among the people; their bite brought death to many in Israel.	6 Alors Dieu envoya contre le peuple des serpents brûlants. Beaucoup parmi les Israélites moururent de leurs morsures.
7 The people came and said to Moses, 'We have sinned by speaking against Yahweh and against you.Intercede for us with Yahweh to save us from these serpents.' Moses interceded for the people,	7 Le peuple vint trouver Moïse et lui dit: “Nous avons péché, nous avons murmuré contre Yahvé et contre toi. Prie Yahvé pour nous, pour qu’il éloigne de nous les serpents.” Moïse pria pour le peuple,
8 and Yahweh replied, 'Make a fiery serpent and raise it as a standard. Anyone who is bitten and looksat it wil survive.'	8 et Yahvé dit à Moïse: “Fabrique-toi un serpent-brûlant et place-le sur un poteau. Celui qui sera mordu le regardera et sera sauvé.”
9 Moses then made a serpent out of bronze and raised it as a standard, and anyone who was bitten bya serpent and looked at the bronze serpent survived.	9 Moïse fit donc un serpent de bronze et le fixa sur un poteau. Lorsque quelqu’un était mordu par un serpent, il regardait le serpent de bronze et il était sauvé.
10 The Israelites set out and camped at Oboth.	10 Les Israélites partirent et campèrent à Obot.
11 Then they left Oboth and camped at Iye-Abarim, in the desert on the eastern border of Moab.	11 Ils partirent d’Obot et campèrent aux Ruines-des-Abarim, dans le désert, à l’est de Moab, du côté du soleil levant.
12 They set out from there and camped in the gorge of the Zered.	12 Ils partirent de là et campèrent à côté du torrent de Zéred.
13 They set out from there and camped on the other side of the Arnon. This gorge in the desert beginsin the territory of the Amorites. For the Arnon is the frontier of Moab, between the Moabites and the Amorites.	13 Ils partirent de là et campèrent au-delà de l’Arnon. Ce torrent dans le désert limitait le pays des Amorites, car l’Arnon est à la frontière de Moab, entre les Moabites et les Amorites.
14 That is why it says in the Book of the Wars of Yahweh: '. . .Waheb near Suphah and the gorges ofthe Arnon	14 C’est pour cela qu’il est dit dans le Livre des Guerres de Yahvé: “… Vaheb-en-Soufa et le torrent de l’Arnon,
15 and the slope of the ravine running down to the site of Ar and over against the frontier of Moab.'	15 et le versant du ravin qui descend vers Ar, adossé à la frontière de Moab.”
16 And from there they went to Beer, that being the well in connection with which Yahweh had said toMoses, 'Cal the people together and I wil give them water.'	16 De là, ils partirent pour Béer. C’est à propos de ce puits que Yahvé dit à Moïse: “Réunis le peuple et je lui donnerai de l’eau.”
17 Then it was that Israel sang this song: Spring up, wel ! Sing out for the wel ,	17 Alors Israël entonna ce chant: “Ô Puits! Lève-toi et chante!
18 sunk by the princes, dug by the people's leaders with the sceptre, with their staves! -and from thedesert to Mattanah,	18 Puits que des chefs ont creusé, puits que les princes du peuple ont foré avec leur sceptre et leur bâton!” Du désert ils montèrent à Matana,
19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,	19 de Matana à Nahaliel, de Nahaliel à Bamot,
20 and from Bamoth to the val ey that opens into the country of Moab, towards the heights of Pisgahoverlooking the desert.	20 et de Bamot au Vallon, dans la campagne de Moab, vers le mont Pisga, face au désert.
21 Israel sent messengers to say to Sihon king of the Amorites,	21 Israël envoya dire à Sihon, roi des Amorites:
22 'I wish to pass through your country. We shall not stray into the fields or vineyards; we shall not drinkthe water from the wells; we shal keep to the king's highway until we have passed through your territory.'	22 “Laisse-moi passer par ton pays. Nous ne traverserons pas tes champs ni tes vignes, nous ne boirons pas l’eau de tes puits. Nous passerons par la route royale, jusqu’au jour où nous aurons traversé ton pays.”
23 But Sihon would not give Israel leave to pass through his country. He assembled al his people,marched into the desert to meet Israel, and reached Jahaz, where he gave battle to Israel.	23 Mais Sihon ne laissa pas Israël traverser son pays, il rassembla tout son peuple et vint à la rencontre d’Israël dans le désert. Arrivé à Yahas, il attaqua Israël.
24 Israel defeated him by force of arms and conquered his country from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as faras the Ammonites, for Jazer marked the Ammonite frontier.	24 Israël le frappa de l’épée et conquit son pays depuis l’Arnon jusqu’au Yabok, jusqu’à la frontière d’Ammon, car la frontière d’Ammon était bien défendue.
25 Israel took all these towns. Israel occupied al the Amorite towns, Heshbon and al its dependencies,	25 Israël prit toutes ses villes, les Israélites s’installèrent dans toutes les villes des Amorites, à Heshbon et dans ses dépendances.
26 Heshbon being the capital of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had made war on the first king ofMoab and captured al his territory as far as the Arnon.	26 Heshbon était la ville de Sihon roi des Amorites. Il avait vaincu le précédent roi de Moab et s’était emparé de son pays jusqu’à l’Arnon.
27 Hence the poets say: Come to Heshbon! Let the city of Sihon be rebuilt on firm foundations!	27 C’est pour cela que les poètes disent: “Venez à Heshbon, qu’elle soit rebâtie et fortifiée, la ville de Sihon.
28 For fire has burst from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon, devouring Ar of Moab, engulfing theheights of the Arnon.	28 Car un feu est sorti de Heshbon, une flamme de la ville de Sihon. Elle a dévoré Ar-Moab et les Baals des hauts-lieux de l’Arnon!
29 Oh, unhappy Moab! People of Chemosh, you are lost! He has resigned his sons as fugitives, and hisdaughters as prisoners to Sihon king of the Amorites.	29 Malheur à toi Moab! Tu es perdu, peuple de Kémoch! Il a mis ses fils en fuite, de ses filles il a fait des captives de Sihon, roi des Amorites.
30 Their posterity has been destroyed from Heshbon al the way to Dibon, and we have lit a fire all theway from Nophah to Medeba.	30 Heshbon a semé la ruine, ses flèches sont parvenues jusqu’à Dibon. Nous avons mis le feu de Nofa jusqu’à Medba.”
31 Thus Israel occupied the Amorites' territory.	31 Quand Israël s’installa dans le pays des Amorites,
32 Moses then sent men to reconnoitre Jazer, and Israel took it and its dependencies, evicting theAmorites who lived there.	32 Moïse envoya des espions à Yazer. Les Israélites s’emparèrent de cette ville et de ses dépendances et chassèrent les Amorites qui s’y trouvaient.
33 They then turned and marched on Bashan. Og king of Bashan and al his people marched to meetthem and give battle at Edrei.	33 Faisant un détour, ils prirent la route du Bashan. Og, roi du Bashan, s’avança à leur rencontre avec tout son peuple et leur livra bataille à Édréï.
34 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Do not be afraid of him, for I have put him, al his people and his country atyour mercy. Treat him as you treated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.'	34 Yahvé dit à Moïse: “Ne crains pas: je l’ai livré entre tes mains avec tout son peuple et tout son pays. Tu le traiteras comme Sihon, roi des Amorites, qui habitait à Heshbon.”
35 So they pressed their attack against him, his sons and al his people until there was no one left alive.And they took possession of his country.	35 De fait les Israélites les écrasèrent lui, ses fils et tout son peuple, au point qu’il n’en resta pas un seul en vie, et ils s’installèrent dans leur pays.
