NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The king of Arad, the Canaanite living in the Negeb, learned that Israel was coming by way ofAtharim. He attacked Israel and took some prisoners.	1 Cuando el cananeo, rey de Arad, que habitaba en el Négueb, supo que Israel llegaba por el camino de Atarím, lo atacó y se llevó algunos prisioneros.
2 Israel then made this vow to Yahweh, 'If you deliver this people into my power, I shal curse theirtowns with destruction.'	2 Entonces Israel hizo este voto al Señor: «Si pones a este pueblo en nuestra manos, consagraremos sus ciudades al exterminio total».
3 Yahweh heard Israel's words and delivered the Canaanites into their power, and they destroyed themin accordance with their curse. Hence the place was given the name Hormah.	3 El Señor oyó la súplica de Israel y les entregó a los cananeos, que fueron consagrados al exterminio, junto con sus ciudades. Por eso aquel lugar se llamó Jormá.
4 They left Mount Hor by the road to the Sea of Suph, to skirt round Edom. On the way the people lostpatience.	4 Los israelitas partieron del monte Hor por el camino del Mar Rojo, para bordear el territorio de Edom. Pero en el camino, el pueblo perdió la paciencia
5 They spoke against God and against Moses, 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in the desert?For there is neither food nor water here; we are sick of this meagre diet.'	5 y comenzó a hablar contra Dios y contra Moisés: «¿Por qué nos hicieron salir de Egipto para hacernos morir en el desierto? ¡Aquí no hay pan ni agua, y ya estamos hartos de esta comida miserable!».
6 At this, God sent fiery serpents among the people; their bite brought death to many in Israel.	6 Entonces el Señor envió contra el pueblo unas serpientes abrasadoras, que mordieron a la gente, y así murieron muchos israelitas.
7 The people came and said to Moses, 'We have sinned by speaking against Yahweh and against you.Intercede for us with Yahweh to save us from these serpents.' Moses interceded for the people,	7 El pueblo acudió a Moisés y le dijo: «Hemos pecado hablando contra el Señor y contra ti. Intercede delante del Señor, para que aleje de nosotros esas serpientes». Moisés intercedió por el pueblo,
8 and Yahweh replied, 'Make a fiery serpent and raise it as a standard. Anyone who is bitten and looksat it wil survive.'	8 y el Señor le dijo: «Fabrica una serpiente abrasadora y colócala sobre un asta. Y todo el que haya sido mordido, al mirarla, quedará curado».
9 Moses then made a serpent out of bronze and raised it as a standard, and anyone who was bitten bya serpent and looked at the bronze serpent survived.	9 Moisés hizo una serpiente de bronce y la puso sobre un asta. Y cuando alguien era mordido por una serpiente, miraba hacia la serpiente de bronce y quedaba curado.
10 The Israelites set out and camped at Oboth.	10 Los israelitas partieron y acamparon en Obot.
11 Then they left Oboth and camped at Iye-Abarim, in the desert on the eastern border of Moab.	11 Luego siguieron avanzando y acamparon en Iyé Ha Abarím, en el desierto que está en el límite con Moab, hacia oriente.
12 They set out from there and camped in the gorge of the Zered.	12 Partiendo de allí, acamparon junto al torrente Zéred.
13 They set out from there and camped on the other side of the Arnon. This gorge in the desert beginsin the territory of the Amorites. For the Arnon is the frontier of Moab, between the Moabites and the Amorites.	13 Después continuaron avanzando y acamparon más allá del Arnón, en el desierto que se extiende desde el territorio de los amorreos, porque el Arnón sirve de frontera entre Moab y los amorreos.
14 That is why it says in the Book of the Wars of Yahweh: '. . .Waheb near Suphah and the gorges ofthe Arnon	14 Por eso, el Libro de las Guerras del Señor habla de «...Vaheb en Sufá, y los torrentes; el Arnón,
15 and the slope of the ravine running down to the site of Ar and over against the frontier of Moab.'	15 con sus afluentes, que se extiende hasta el territorio de Moab...».
16 And from there they went to Beer, that being the well in connection with which Yahweh had said toMoses, 'Cal the people together and I wil give them water.'	16 De allí partieron para Beer, el pozo donde el Señor dijo a Moisés: «Reúne al pueblo y le daré agua».
17 Then it was that Israel sang this song: Spring up, wel ! Sing out for the wel ,	17 Entonces Israel entonó este canto: «¡Surge, Pozo! ¡Entónenle un canto!
18 sunk by the princes, dug by the people's leaders with the sceptre, with their staves! -and from thedesert to Mattanah,	18 Pozo que cavaron los jefes, que perforaron los nobles del pueblo, con sus cetros, con sus bastones». De Mibdar fueron a Mataná,
19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,	19 de Mataná a Najaliel, de Najaliel a Bamot,
20 and from Bamoth to the val ey that opens into the country of Moab, towards the heights of Pisgahoverlooking the desert.	20 y de Bamot al valle que está en el campo de Moab, hacia la cima del Pisgá, dominando el desierto.
21 Israel sent messengers to say to Sihon king of the Amorites,	21 Israel envió unos mensajeros a Sijón, rey de los amorreos, con esta propuesta:
22 'I wish to pass through your country. We shall not stray into the fields or vineyards; we shall not drinkthe water from the wells; we shal keep to the king's highway until we have passed through your territory.'	22 «Déjame pasar por tu país. No nos desviaremos hacia los campos o los viñedos, ni beberemos agua de los pozos. Iremos por el camino principal, hasta que hayamos atravesado tu territorio».
23 But Sihon would not give Israel leave to pass through his country. He assembled al his people,marched into the desert to meet Israel, and reached Jahaz, where he gave battle to Israel.	23 Sijón no permitió que Israel pasara por su territorio, sino que reunió todas sus fuerzas y fue a combatir contra Israel en el desierto. Cuando llegó a Iahás, presentó batalla a Israel,
24 Israel defeated him by force of arms and conquered his country from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as faras the Ammonites, for Jazer marked the Ammonite frontier.	24 pero Israel lo pasó al filo de la espada y se apoderó de su territorio, desde el Arnón hasta el Iaboc, y hasta Az de los amonitas, porque Az servía de frontera con los amonitas.
25 Israel took all these towns. Israel occupied al the Amorite towns, Heshbon and al its dependencies,	25 Israel se apoderó de todas esas ciudades, y se estableció en las ciudades de los amorreos, en Jesbón y en sus ciudades dependientes.
26 Heshbon being the capital of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had made war on the first king ofMoab and captured al his territory as far as the Arnon.	26 Jesbón era la ciudad de Sijón, el rey de los amorreos que había luchado contra un rey anterior de Moab y le había arrebatado su territorio hasta el Arnón.
27 Hence the poets say: Come to Heshbon! Let the city of Sihon be rebuilt on firm foundations!	27 Por eso los poetas recitan: «¡Vengan a Jesbón! Que sea reconstruida, que sea restaurada la ciudad de Sijón.
28 For fire has burst from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon, devouring Ar of Moab, engulfing theheights of the Arnon.	28 Porque ha salido fuego de Jesbón, una llamarada de la ciudad de Sijón, que consumió a Ar de Moab y a los jefes de las alturas del Arnón.
29 Oh, unhappy Moab! People of Chemosh, you are lost! He has resigned his sons as fugitives, and hisdaughters as prisoners to Sihon king of the Amorites.	29 ¡Ay de ti, Moab! ¡Estás perdido, pueblo de Quemós! El puso en fuga a sus hijos, e hizo prisioneras a sus hijas en manos de Sijón, un rey amorreo.
30 Their posterity has been destroyed from Heshbon al the way to Dibon, and we have lit a fire all theway from Nophah to Medeba.	30 Los hemos traspasado a flechazos, está en ruinas Jesbón hasta Dibón; hemos arrasado hasta Nofaj, que está junto a Mádaba».
31 Thus Israel occupied the Amorites' territory.	31 De esta manera, Israel ocupó el país de los amorreos.
32 Moses then sent men to reconnoitre Jazer, and Israel took it and its dependencies, evicting theAmorites who lived there.	32 Luego Moisés mandó a explorar Iázer, y los israelitas conquistaron las ciudades dependientes de ella, y despojaron a los amorreos que estaban allí.
33 They then turned and marched on Bashan. Og king of Bashan and al his people marched to meetthem and give battle at Edrei.	33 Cuando reanudaron la marcha y avanzaron en dirección a Basán, Og, rey de Basán, les salió al encuentro con todas sus tropas, para presentarles batalla en Edrei.
34 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Do not be afraid of him, for I have put him, al his people and his country atyour mercy. Treat him as you treated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.'	34 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: «No le tengas miedo, porque yo lo puse en tus manos con todo su pueblo y todo su territorio. Harás con él lo mismo que hiciste con Sijón, el rey de los amorreos que habitaba en Jesbón».
35 So they pressed their attack against him, his sons and al his people until there was no one left alive.And they took possession of his country.	35 Los israelitas lo derrotaron, a él a sus hijos y a todo su pueblo, sin dejar ningún sobreviviente. Así se apoderaron de su territorio.
