1 The king of Arad, the Canaanite living in the Negeb, learned that Israel was coming by way ofAtharim. He attacked Israel and took some prisoners.	1 Il re cananeo di Arad, che abitava il Negheb, appena seppe che Israele veniva per la via di Atarìm, attaccò battaglia contro Israele e fece alcuni prigionieri.
2 Israel then made this vow to Yahweh, 'If you deliver this people into my power, I shal curse theirtowns with destruction.'	2 Allora Israele fece un voto al Signore e disse: «Se tu mi consegni nelle mani questo popolo, le loro città saranno da me votate allo sterminio».
3 Yahweh heard Israel's words and delivered the Canaanites into their power, and they destroyed themin accordance with their curse. Hence the place was given the name Hormah.	3 Il Signore ascoltò la voce d’Israele e gli consegnò nelle mani i Cananei; Israele votò allo sterminio i Cananei e le loro città e quel luogo fu chiamato Corma.
4 They left Mount Hor by the road to the Sea of Suph, to skirt round Edom. On the way the people lostpatience.	4 Gli Israeliti si mossero dal monte Or per la via del Mar Rosso, per aggirare il territorio di Edom. Ma il popolo non sopportò il viaggio.
5 They spoke against God and against Moses, 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in the desert?For there is neither food nor water here; we are sick of this meagre diet.'	5 Il popolo disse contro Dio e contro Mosè: «Perché ci avete fatto salire dall’Egitto per farci morire in questo deserto? Perché qui non c’è né pane né acqua e siamo nauseati di questo cibo così leggero».
6 At this, God sent fiery serpents among the people; their bite brought death to many in Israel.	6 Allora il Signore mandò fra il popolo serpenti brucianti i quali mordevano la gente, e un gran numero d’Israeliti morì.
7 The people came and said to Moses, 'We have sinned by speaking against Yahweh and against you.Intercede for us with Yahweh to save us from these serpents.' Moses interceded for the people,	7 Il popolo venne da Mosè e disse: «Abbiamo peccato, perché abbiamo parlato contro il Signore e contro di te; supplica il Signore che allontani da noi questi serpenti». Mosè pregò per il popolo.
8 and Yahweh replied, 'Make a fiery serpent and raise it as a standard. Anyone who is bitten and looksat it wil survive.'	8 Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Fatti un serpente e mettilo sopra un’asta; chiunque sarà stato morso e lo guarderà, resterà in vita».
9 Moses then made a serpent out of bronze and raised it as a standard, and anyone who was bitten bya serpent and looked at the bronze serpent survived.	9 Mosè allora fece un serpente di bronzo e lo mise sopra l’asta; quando un serpente aveva morso qualcuno, se questi guardava il serpente di bronzo, restava in vita.
10 The Israelites set out and camped at Oboth.	10 Gli Israeliti si mossero e si accamparono a Obot;
11 Then they left Oboth and camped at Iye-Abarim, in the desert on the eastern border of Moab.	11 partiti da Obot si accamparono a Iie-Abarìm, nel deserto che sta di fronte a Moab, dal lato dove sorge il sole.
12 They set out from there and camped in the gorge of the Zered.	12 Di là si mossero e si accamparono nella valle di Zered.
13 They set out from there and camped on the other side of the Arnon. This gorge in the desert beginsin the territory of the Amorites. For the Arnon is the frontier of Moab, between the Moabites and the Amorites.	13 Si mossero di là e si accamparono sull’altra riva dell’Arnon, che scorre nel deserto e proviene dal territorio degli Amorrei; l’Arnon infatti è la frontiera di Moab, fra Moab e gli Amorrei.
14 That is why it says in the Book of the Wars of Yahweh: '. . .Waheb near Suphah and the gorges ofthe Arnon	14 Per questo si dice nel libro delle Guerre del Signore: «Vaèb in Sufa e i torrenti, l’Arnon
15 and the slope of the ravine running down to the site of Ar and over against the frontier of Moab.'	15 e il pendio dei torrenti, che declina verso la sede di Ar e si appoggia alla frontiera di Moab».
16 And from there they went to Beer, that being the well in connection with which Yahweh had said toMoses, 'Cal the people together and I wil give them water.'	16 Di là andarono a Beèr. Questo è il pozzo di cui il Signore disse a Mosè: «Raduna il popolo e io gli darò l’acqua».
17 Then it was that Israel sang this song: Spring up, wel ! Sing out for the wel ,	17 Allora Israele cantò questo canto: «Sgorga, o pozzo: cantàtelo!
18 sunk by the princes, dug by the people's leaders with the sceptre, with their staves! -and from thedesert to Mattanah,	18 Pozzo scavato da prìncipi, perforato da nobili del popolo, con lo scettro, con i loro bastoni». Poi dal deserto andarono a Mattanà,
19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,	19 da Mattanà a Nacalièl, da Nacalièl a Bamòt
20 and from Bamoth to the val ey that opens into the country of Moab, towards the heights of Pisgahoverlooking the desert.	20 e da Bamòt alla valle che si trova nelle steppe di Moab presso la cima del Pisga, che è di fronte al deserto.
21 Israel sent messengers to say to Sihon king of the Amorites,	21 Israele mandò messaggeri a Sicon, re degli Amorrei, per dirgli:
22 'I wish to pass through your country. We shall not stray into the fields or vineyards; we shall not drinkthe water from the wells; we shal keep to the king's highway until we have passed through your territory.'	22 «Lasciami passare nel tuo territorio; noi non devieremo per i campi né per le vigne e non berremo l’acqua dei pozzi; seguiremo la via Regia finché avremo oltrepassato il tuo territorio».
23 But Sihon would not give Israel leave to pass through his country. He assembled al his people,marched into the desert to meet Israel, and reached Jahaz, where he gave battle to Israel.	23 Ma Sicon non permise a Israele di passare per il suo territorio, anzi radunò tutto il suo popolo e uscì incontro a Israele nel deserto; giunse a Iaas e combatté contro Israele.
24 Israel defeated him by force of arms and conquered his country from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as faras the Ammonites, for Jazer marked the Ammonite frontier.	24 Israele lo sconfisse, passandolo a fil di spada, e conquistò il suo territorio dall’Arnon fino allo Iabbok, estendendosi fino alla regione degli Ammoniti, perché la frontiera degli Ammoniti era forte.
25 Israel took all these towns. Israel occupied al the Amorite towns, Heshbon and al its dependencies,	25 Israele prese tutte quelle città e abitò in tutte le città degli Amorrei, cioè a Chesbon e in tutte le città del suo territorio;
26 Heshbon being the capital of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had made war on the first king ofMoab and captured al his territory as far as the Arnon.	26 Chesbon infatti era la città di Sicon, re degli Amorrei, il quale aveva mosso guerra al precedente re di Moab e gli aveva strappato di mano tutto il suo territorio, fino all’Arnon.
27 Hence the poets say: Come to Heshbon! Let the city of Sihon be rebuilt on firm foundations!	27 Per questo dicono i poeti: «Entrate in Chesbon! Sia ricostruita e rifondata la città di Sicon!
28 For fire has burst from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon, devouring Ar of Moab, engulfing theheights of the Arnon.	28 Perché un fuoco uscì da Chesbon, una fiamma dalla cittadella di Sicon: essa divorò Ar-Moab, i Baal delle alture dell’Arnon.
29 Oh, unhappy Moab! People of Chemosh, you are lost! He has resigned his sons as fugitives, and hisdaughters as prisoners to Sihon king of the Amorites.	29 Guai a te, Moab, sei perduto, popolo di Camos! Egli ha reso fuggiaschi i suoi figli, e le sue figlie ha dato in schiavitù a Sicon, re degli Amorrei.
30 Their posterity has been destroyed from Heshbon al the way to Dibon, and we have lit a fire all theway from Nophah to Medeba.	30 Ma noi li abbiamo trafitti! È rovinata Chesbon fino a Dibon. Abbiamo devastato fino a Nofach, che è presso Màdaba».
31 Thus Israel occupied the Amorites' territory.	31 Israele si stabilì dunque nella terra degli Amorrei.
32 Moses then sent men to reconnoitre Jazer, and Israel took it and its dependencies, evicting theAmorites who lived there.	32 Poi Mosè mandò a esplorare Iazer e gli Israeliti presero le città del suo territorio e ne cacciarono gli Amorrei che vi si trovavano.
33 They then turned and marched on Bashan. Og king of Bashan and al his people marched to meetthem and give battle at Edrei.	33 Poi mutarono direzione e salirono lungo la strada verso Basan. Og, re di Basan, uscì contro di loro con tutta la sua gente per dar loro battaglia a Edrei.
34 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Do not be afraid of him, for I have put him, al his people and his country atyour mercy. Treat him as you treated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.'	34 Ma il Signore disse a Mosè: «Non lo temere, perché io lo do in tuo potere, lui, tutta la sua gente e il suo territorio; trattalo come hai trattato Sicon, re degli Amorrei, che abitava a Chesbon».
35 So they pressed their attack against him, his sons and al his people until there was no one left alive.And they took possession of his country.	35 E sconfissero lui, i suoi figli e tutto il suo popolo, così che non gli rimase più superstite alcuno, e si impadronirono del suo territorio.
