NEW JERUSALEM	DIODATI
1 and Darius the Mede received the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.	1 EI piacque a Dario di costituire sopra il regno cenventi satrapi, i quali fossero per tutto il regno;
2 It pleased Darius to appoint a hundred and twenty satraps over his kingdom for the various parts,	2 e sopra essi tre presidenti, de’ quali Daniele era l’uno, a’ quali que’ satrapi rendessero ragione; acciocchè il re non sofferisse danno.
3 and over them three presidents -- of whom Daniel was one -- to whom the satraps were to beresponsible. This was to safeguard the king's interests.	3 Or quel personaggio Daniele sopravanzava gli altri presidenti, e satrapi; perciocchè in lui era uno spirito eccellente, onde il re pensava di costituirlo sopra tutto il regno.
4 This Daniel, by virtue of the marvel ous spirit residing in him, was so evidently superior to the otherpresidents and satraps that the king considered appointing him to rule the whole kingdom.	4 Perciò, i presidenti, e i satrapi, cercavano il modo di trovar qualche cagione contro a Daniele, intorno agli affari del regno; ma non potevano trovare alcuna cagione, nè misfatto; perciocchè egli era fedele, e non si trovava in lui alcun fallo, nè misfatto.
5 The presidents and satraps, in consequence, started hunting for some affair of state by which theycould discredit Daniel; but they could find nothing to his discredit, and no case of negligence; he was sopunctilious that they could not find a single instance of maladministration or neglect.	5 Allora quegli uomini dissero: Noi non possiamo trovar cagione alcuna contro a questo Daniele, se non la troviamo contro a lui intorno alla legge del suo Dio
6 These men then thought, 'We shal never find a way of discrediting Daniel unless we try something todo with the law of his God.'	6 Allora que’ presidenti, e satrapi, si radunarono appresso del re, e gli dissero così: Re Dario, possa tu vivere in perpetuo.
7 The presidents and satraps then went in a body to the king. 'King Darius,' they said, 'live for ever!	7 Tutti i presidenti del regno, i magistrati, e i satrapi, i consiglieri, e i duchi, han preso consiglio di formare uno statuto reale, e fare uno stretto divieto che chiunque farà richiesta alcuna a qualunque dio, od uomo, fra qui e trenta giorni, salvo che a te, o re, sia gettato nella fossa dei leoni.
8 We are all agreed, presidents of the realm, magistrates, satraps, councillors and governors, that theking should issue an edict enforcing the fol owing regulation: Whoever within the next thirty days prays toanyone, divine or human, other than to yourself, Your Majesty, is to be thrown into the lions' den.	8 Ora, o re, fa’ il divieto, e scrivine lettere patenti, che non si possano mutare; quali son le leggi di Media, e di Persia, che sono irrevocabili.
9 Your Majesty, ratify the edict at once by signing this document, making it unalterable, as befits the lawof the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked.'	9 Il re Dario adunque scrisse le lettere patenti, e il divieto.
10 King Darius accordingly signed the document embodying the edict.	10 Or Daniele, quando seppe che le lettere erano scritte, entrò in casa sua; e, lasciando le finestre della sua sala aperte verso Gerusalemme, a tre tempi del giorno si poneva inginocchioni, e faceva orazione, e rendeva grazie davanti al suo Dio; perciocchè così era uso di fare per addietro
11 When Daniel heard that the document had been signed, he retired to his house. The windows of hisupstairs room faced towards Jerusalem. Three times each day, he went down on his knees, praying and givingpraise to God as he had always done.	11 Allora quegli uomini si radunarono, e trovarono Daniele orando, e supplicando davanti al suo Dio.
12 These men came along in a body and found Daniel praying and pleading with God.	12 Ed in quello stante vennero al re, e dissero in sua presenza, intorno al divieto reale: Non hai tu scritto il divieto, che chiunque farà alcuna richiesta a qualunque dio, od uomo, di qui a trenta giorni, salvo che a te, o re, sia gettato nella fossa de’ leoni? Il re rispose, e disse: La cosa è ferma, nella maniera delle leggi di Media, e di Persia, che sono irrevocabili.
13 They then went to the king and reminded him of the royal edict, 'Have you not signed an edictforbidding anyone for the next thirty days to pray to anyone, divine or human, other than to yourself, YourMajesty, on pain of being thrown into the lions' den?' 'The decision stands', the king replied, 'as befits the law ofthe Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked.'	13 Allora essi risposero, e dissero in presenza del re: Daniele, che è di quelli che sono stati menati in cattività di Giudea, non ha fatto conto alcuno di te, o re, nè del divieto che tu hai scritto; anzi a tre tempi del giorno fa le sue orazioni.
14 They then said to the king, 'Your Majesty, this man Daniel, one of the exiles from Judah, disregardsboth you and the edict which you have signed: he is at his prayers three times each day.'	14 Allora, come il re ebbe intesa la cosa, ne fu molto dolente, e pose cura di liberar Daniele; e fino al tramontar del sole, fece suo sforzo, per iscamparlo.
15 When the king heard these words he was deeply distressed and determined to save Daniel; he rackedhis brains until sunset to find some way to save him.	15 In quel punto quegli uomini si radunarono appresso del re, e gli dissero: Sappi, o re, che i Medi, e i Persiani hanno una legge, che alcun divieto, o statuto, che il re abbia fermato, non si possa mutare.
16 But the men kept pressing the king, 'Your Majesty, remember that in conformity with the law of theMedes and the Persians, no edict or decree can be altered when once issued by the king.'	16 Allora il re comandò che si menasse Daniele, e che si gettasse nella fossa de’ leoni. E il re fece motto a Daniele, e gli disse: L’Iddio tuo, al qual tu servi con perseveranza, sarà quello che ti libererà.
17 The king then ordered Daniel to be brought and thrown into the lion pit. The king said to Daniel, 'YourGod, whom you have served so faithful y, wil have to save you.'	17 E fu portata una pietra, che fu posta sopra la bocca della fossa; e il re la suggellò col suo anello, e con l’anello de’ suoi grandi; acciocchè non si mutasse nulla intorno a Daniele
18 A stone was then brought and laid over the mouth of the pit; and the king sealed it with his own signetand with that of his noblemen, so that there could be no going back on the original decision about Daniel.	18 Allora il re andò al suo palazzo, e passò la notte senza cena, e non si fece apparecchiar la mensa, e perdette il sonno.
19 The king returned to his palace, spent the night in fasting and refused to receive any of hisconcubines. Sleep eluded him,	19 Poi il re si levò la mattina a buon’ora, in su lo schiarir del dì, e andò in fretta alla fossa de’ leoni.
20 and at the first sign of dawn he got up and hurried to the lion pit.	20 E come fu presso della fossa, chiamò Daniele con voce dolorosa, E il re prese a dire a Daniele: Daniele, servitore dell’Iddio vivente, il tuo Dio, al qual tu servi con perseveranza, avrebbe egli pur potuto scamparti da’ leoni?
21 As he approached the pit he cal ed in anguished tones to Daniel, 'Daniel, servant of the living God!Has your God, whom you serve so faithful y, been able to save you from the lions?'	21 Allora Daniele parlò al re, dicendo: O re, possi tu vivere in perpetuo.
22 Daniel answered the king, 'May Your Majesty live for ever!	22 L’Iddio mio ha mandato il suo Angelo, il quale ha turata la bocca de’ leoni, talchè non mi hanno guasto; perciocchè io sono stato trovato innocente nel suo cospetto; ed anche inverso te, o re, non ho commesso alcun misfatto.
23 My God sent his angel who sealed the lions' jaws; they did me no harm, since in his sight I amblameless; neither have I ever done you any wrong, Your Majesty.'	23 Allora il re si rallegrò molto di lui, e comandò che Daniele fosse tratto fuor della fossa; e Daniele fu tratto fuor della fossa, e non si trovò in lui lesione alcuna; perciocchè egli si era confidato nel suo Dio.
24 The king was overjoyed and ordered Daniel to be released from the pit. Daniel was released from thepit and found to be quite unhurt, because he had trusted in his God.	24 E per comandamento del re, furon menati quegli uomini che aveano accusato Daniele, e furon gettati nella fossa de’ leoni, essi, i lor figliuoli, e le lor mogli; e non erano ancor giunti al fondo della fossa, che i leoni furono loro addosso, e fiaccaron loro tutte le ossa
25 The king then sent for the men who had accused Daniel and had them thrown into the lion pit, andtheir wives and children too; and before they reached the floor of the pit the lions had seized them and crushedtheir bones to pieces.	25 Allora il re Dario scrisse a tutti i popoli, nazioni, e lingue, che abitano per tutta la terra, lettere dell’infrascritto tenore: La vostra pace sia accresciuta.
26 King Darius then wrote to al nations, peoples and languages dwel ing throughout the world: 'May youprosper more and more!	26 Da parte mia è fatto un decreto: che in tutto l’imperio del mio regno si riverisca, e tema l’Iddio di Daniele; perciocchè egli è l’Iddio vivente, e che dimora in eterno; e il suo regno è un regno che non sarà giammai distrutto, e la sua signoria durerà infino al fine.
27 This is my decree: Throughout every dominion of my realm, let al tremble with fear before the God ofDaniel: He is the living God, he endures for ever, his kingdom wil never be destroyed and his empire nevercome to an end.	27 Egli riscuote, e libera, e fa segni, e miracoli in cielo, ed in terra; egli è quel che ha Daniele riscosso dalle branche dei leoni.
28 He saves, sets free, and works signs and wonders in the heavens and on earth; he has saved Danielfrom the power of the lions.'	28 Or questo personaggio Daniele prosperò nel regno di Dario, e nel regno di Ciro Persiano
29 This Daniel flourished in the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
