1 and Darius the Mede received the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.	1 Et Darius le Mède reçut son royaume alors qu’il avait déjà 62 ans.
2 It pleased Darius to appoint a hundred and twenty satraps over his kingdom for the various parts,	2 Darius prit un décret pour son royaume: il mettait 120 gouverneurs à la tête de chacune des provinces du royaume.
3 and over them three presidents -- of whom Daniel was one -- to whom the satraps were to beresponsible. This was to safeguard the king's interests.	3 Pour préserver les intérêts du roi, ils devaient rendre des comptes à trois hauts fonctionnaires placés à leur tête (Daniel était l’un des trois).
4 This Daniel, by virtue of the marvel ous spirit residing in him, was so evidently superior to the otherpresidents and satraps that the king considered appointing him to rule the whole kingdom.	4 Mais Daniel se distingua vite parmi les hauts fonctionnaires et les gouverneurs, car il y avait en lui un esprit vraiment supérieur, et le roi songeait à le mettre à la tête du royaume tout entier.
5 The presidents and satraps, in consequence, started hunting for some affair of state by which theycould discredit Daniel; but they could find nothing to his discredit, and no case of negligence; he was sopunctilious that they could not find a single instance of maladministration or neglect.	5 C’est pourquoi les hauts fonctionnaires et les gouverneurs cherchèrent dans les affaires de l’État un prétexte pour accuser Daniel, mais ils ne trouvèrent pas un seul reproche à lui faire, car il était fidèle et l’on ne pouvait lui reprocher ni négligence ni faute.
6 These men then thought, 'We shal never find a way of discrediting Daniel unless we try something todo with the law of his God.'	6 Ces hommes se dirent donc: “Puisqu’on ne peut rien reprocher à ce Daniel, trouvons quelque prétexte dans la religion de son Dieu.”
7 The presidents and satraps then went in a body to the king. 'King Darius,' they said, 'live for ever!	7 Les hauts fonctionnaires et les gouverneurs se précipitèrent chez le roi et lui dirent: “Vive le roi Darius à jamais!
8 We are all agreed, presidents of the realm, magistrates, satraps, councillors and governors, that theking should issue an edict enforcing the fol owing regulation: Whoever within the next thirty days prays toanyone, divine or human, other than to yourself, Your Majesty, is to be thrown into the lions' den.	8 Tous les hauts fonctionnaires du royaume, les préfets, les gouverneurs, les conseillers et les hommes de loi, pensent qu’il serait bon de proclamer cette interdiction par décret royal: Quiconque, durant ces 30 jours, adressera une prière à un autre dieu ou à une autre personne que toi, ô roi, sera jeté dans la fosse aux lions.
9 Your Majesty, ratify the edict at once by signing this document, making it unalterable, as befits the lawof the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked.'	9 Maintenant, ô roi, prends cette décision, fais-la mettre par écrit pour qu’elle ne soit pas modifiée et ainsi, selon la loi des Mèdes et des Perses, personne ne pourra l’annuler.”
10 King Darius accordingly signed the document embodying the edict.	10 Le roi Darius signa donc cette interdiction.
11 When Daniel heard that the document had been signed, he retired to his house. The windows of hisupstairs room faced towards Jerusalem. Three times each day, he went down on his knees, praying and givingpraise to God as he had always done.	11 Quand il apprit que ce décret était signé, Daniel rentra chez lui; la chambre était à l’étage et ses fenêtres regardaient vers Jérusalem. Trois fois par jour Daniel se mettait à genoux, priait et louait Dieu comme il l’avait toujours fait.
12 These men came along in a body and found Daniel praying and pleading with God.	12 Or ces hommes arrivèrent en nombre et trouvèrent Daniel en train de supplier et d’implorer son Dieu.
13 They then went to the king and reminded him of the royal edict, 'Have you not signed an edictforbidding anyone for the next thirty days to pray to anyone, divine or human, other than to yourself, YourMajesty, on pain of being thrown into the lions' den?' 'The decision stands', the king replied, 'as befits the law ofthe Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked.'	13 Ils coururent donc chez le roi et lui rappelèrent l’interdiction royale: “N’as-tu pas signé un décret selon lequel tout homme qui, dans les 30 jours à venir, adressera une prière à un autre dieu ou à une autre personne que toi, sera jeté dans la fosse aux lions?” Le roi répondit: “La chose a été décidée de façon ferme, selon la loi des Mèdes et des Perses: personne ne peut aller contre.”
14 They then said to the king, 'Your Majesty, this man Daniel, one of the exiles from Judah, disregardsboth you and the edict which you have signed: he is at his prayers three times each day.'	14 Alors ils dirent au roi: “Daniel, cet homme qui fait partie des déportés de Juda, n’a aucun respect pour toi, ni pour l’interdiction que tu as signée. Trois fois par jour il fait sa prière.”
15 When the king heard these words he was deeply distressed and determined to save Daniel; he rackedhis brains until sunset to find some way to save him.	15 En entendant ces mots, le roi fut très contrarié; il voulait sauver Daniel et, jusqu’au coucher du soleil, il chercha en vain une solution.
16 But the men kept pressing the king, 'Your Majesty, remember that in conformity with the law of theMedes and the Persians, no edict or decree can be altered when once issued by the king.'	16 Mais ces hommes le pressaient, ils lui disaient: “Sache-le bien, ô roi, selon la loi des Mèdes et des Perses, aucune interdiction ou décret signé par le roi ne peut être annulé.”
17 The king then ordered Daniel to be brought and thrown into the lion pit. The king said to Daniel, 'YourGod, whom you have served so faithful y, wil have to save you.'	17 Alors le roi donna l’ordre d’amener Daniel et de le jeter dans la fosse aux lions. Le roi dit à Daniel: “Que ton Dieu que tu sers avec tant de fidélité te délivre!”
18 A stone was then brought and laid over the mouth of the pit; and the king sealed it with his own signetand with that of his noblemen, so that there could be no going back on the original decision about Daniel.	18 On apporta une grosse pierre pour fermer l’entrée de la fosse; le roi et ses hauts fonctionnaires y apposèrent leurs sceaux, si bien que l’on ne pouvait plus rien changer au sort de Daniel.
19 The king returned to his palace, spent the night in fasting and refused to receive any of hisconcubines. Sleep eluded him,	19 Le roi rentra dans son palais, jeûna toute la nuit et refusa de coucher avec ses concubines; il lui fut impossible de dormir.
20 and at the first sign of dawn he got up and hurried to the lion pit.	20 Avant même le lever du soleil, le roi se leva et se rendit au plus vite à la fosse aux lions.
21 As he approached the pit he cal ed in anguished tones to Daniel, 'Daniel, servant of the living God!Has your God, whom you serve so faithful y, been able to save you from the lions?'	21 Il s’approcha de la fosse et cria à Daniel d’une voix inquiète: “Daniel, serviteur du Dieu vivant, ce Dieu que tu sers avec tant de fidélité, a-t-il été capable de te délivrer des lions?”
22 Daniel answered the king, 'May Your Majesty live for ever!	22 Daniel répondit au roi: “Que le roi vive à jamais!
23 My God sent his angel who sealed the lions' jaws; they did me no harm, since in his sight I amblameless; neither have I ever done you any wrong, Your Majesty.'	23 Mon Dieu a envoyé son ange, il a fermé la gueule des lions et ils ne m’ont pas touché car j’ai été trouvé innocent devant lui, et devant toi aussi, ô roi, je suis innocent.”
24 The king was overjoyed and ordered Daniel to be released from the pit. Daniel was released from thepit and found to be quite unhurt, because he had trusted in his God.	24 Le roi éprouva une grande joie et donna l’ordre de faire sortir Daniel de la fosse. On fit donc sortir Daniel de la fosse aux lions et on le trouva en parfait état parce qu’il avait mis sa confiance en son Dieu.
25 The king then sent for the men who had accused Daniel and had them thrown into the lion pit, andtheir wives and children too; and before they reached the floor of the pit the lions had seized them and crushedtheir bones to pieces.	25 Alors le roi fit venir les hommes qui avaient calomnié Daniel, il les fit jeter dans la fosse aux lions avec leurs enfants et leurs femmes, et avant même qu’ils aient touché le sol de la fosse, les lions s’étaient jetés sur eux et leur brisaient les os.
26 King Darius then wrote to al nations, peoples and languages dwel ing throughout the world: 'May youprosper more and more!	26 Le roi Darius écrivit à tous les peuples, nations et langues qui habitent sur toute la terre: “Que l’abondance et la paix soient avec vous!
27 This is my decree: Throughout every dominion of my realm, let al tremble with fear before the God ofDaniel: He is the living God, he endures for ever, his kingdom wil never be destroyed and his empire nevercome to an end.	27 Voici le décret que je prends: Dans toute l’étendue de mon royaume, les gens craindront et respecteront le Dieu de Daniel. “Il est le Dieu vivant, qui demeure à jamais: son royaume ne sera pas détruit et son empire n’aura pas de fin.
28 He saves, sets free, and works signs and wonders in the heavens and on earth; he has saved Danielfrom the power of the lions.'	28 “C’est lui qui sauve et qui délivre, qui opère des signes et des prodiges dans les cieux et sur la terre: il a sauvé Daniel des griffes et de la dent des lions.”
29 This Daniel flourished in the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.	29 Durant le règne de Darius et celui de Cyrus le Perse, Daniel fut de plus en plus considéré.
