NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
1 King Nebuchadnezzar had a golden statue made, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide, which he set upon the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.1 Nabuchodonosor rex fecit statuam auream, altitudine cubitorum sexaginta, latitudine cubitorum sex, et statuit eam in campo Dura, provinciæ Babylonis.
2 King Nebuchadnezzar then summoned the satraps, magistrates, governors, counsel ors, treasurers, judges, lawyers, and al the provincial authorities to assemble and attend the dedication of the statue set up byKing Nebuchadnezzar.2 Itaque Nabuchodonosor rex misit ad congregandos satrapas, magistratus, et judices, duces, et tyrannos, et præfectos, omnesque principes regionum, ut convenirent ad dedicationem statuæ quam erexerat Nabuchodonosor rex.
3 Satraps, magistrates, governors, counsel ors, treasurers, judges, lawyers and al the provincialauthorities then assembled for the dedication of the statue set up by King Nebuchadnezzar and stood in front ofthe statue which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.3 Tunc congregati sunt satrapæ, magistratus, et judices, duces, et tyranni, et optimates, qui erant in potestatibus constituti, et universi principes regionum, ut convenirent ad dedicationem statuæ, quam erexerat Nabuchodonosor rex. Stabant autem in conspectu statuæ, quam posuerat Nabuchodonosor rex :
4 A herald then loudly proclaimed: 'Peoples, nations, languages! Thus are you commanded:4 et præco clamabat valenter : Vobis dicitur populis, tribubus, et linguis :
5 the moment you hear the sound of horn, pipe, lyre, zither, harp, bagpipe and every other kind ofinstrument, you wil prostrate yourselves and worship the golden statue set up by King Nebuchadnezzar.5 in hora qua audieritis sonitum tubæ, et fistulæ, et citharæ, sambucæ, et psalterii, et symphoniæ, et universi generis musicorum, cadentes adorate statuam auream, quam constituit Nabuchodonosor rex.
6 Anyone who does not prostrate himself and worship wil immediately be thrown into the burning fieryfurnace.'6 Si quis autem non prostratus adoraverit, eadem hora mittetur in fornacem ignis ardentis.
7 And so, the instant al the peoples heard the sound of horn, pipe, lyre, zither, harp, bagpipe and al theother instruments, al the peoples, nations and languages prostrated themselves and worshipped the statue setup by King Nebuchadnezzar.7 Post hæc igitur, statim ut audierunt omnes populi sonitum tubæ, fistulæ, et citharæ, sambucæ, et psalterii, et symphoniæ, et omnis generis musicorum, cadentes omnes populi, tribus, et linguæ adoraverunt statuam auream, quam constituerat Nabuchodonosor rex.
8 Some Chaldaeans then came forward and maliciously accused the Jews.8 Statimque in ipso tempore accedentes viri Chaldæi accusaverunt Judæos :
9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, 'May Your Majesty live for ever!9 dixeruntque Nabuchodonosor regi : Rex, in æternum vive !
10 You have issued a decree, Your Majesty, to the effect that everyone on hearing the sound of horn, pipe, lyre, zither, harp, bagpipe and every other kind of instrument is to prostrate himself and worship the goldenstatue;10 tu, rex, posuisti decretum, ut omnis homo, qui audierit sonitum tubæ, fistulæ, et citharæ, sambucæ, et psalterii, et symphoniæ, et universi generis musicorum, prosternat se, et adoret statuam auream :
11 and that anyone who does not prostrate himself and worship is to be thrown into the burning fieryfurnace.11 si quis autem non procidens adoraverit, mittatur in fornacem ignis ardentis.
12 Now, there are certain Jews to whom you have entrusted the affairs of the province of Babylon:Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego; these men have ignored your command, Your Majesty; they do not serveyour gods, and refuse to worship the golden statue you have set up.'12 Sunt ergo viri Judæi, quos constituisti super opera regionis Babylonis, Sidrach, Misach, et Abdenago : viri isti contempserunt, rex, decretum tuum : deos tuos non colunt, et statuam auream, quam erexisti, non adorant.
13 Shaking with fury, Nebuchadnezzar sent for Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego. The men wereimmediately brought before the king.13 Tunc Nabuchodonosor, in furore et in ira, præcepit ut adducerentur Sidrach, Misach, et Abdenago : qui confestim adducti sunt in conspectu regis.
14 Nebuchadnezzar addressed them, 'Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego, is it true that you do notserve my gods, and that you refuse to worship the golden statue I have set up?14 Pronuntiansque Nabuchodonosor rex, ait eis : Verene Sidrach, Misach, et Abdenago, deos meos non colitis, et statuam auream, quam constitui, non adoratis ?
15 When you hear the sound of horn, pipe, lyre, zither, harp, bagpipe and every other kind of instrument, are you prepared to prostrate yourselves and worship the statue I have made? If you refuse to worship it, youwil be thrown forthwith into the burning fiery furnace; then which of the gods could save you from my power?'15 nunc ergo si estis parati, quacumque hora audieritis sonitum tubæ, fistulæ, citharæ, sambucæ, et psalterii, et symphoniæ, omnisque generis musicorum, prosternite vos, et adorate statuam, quam feci : quod si non adoraveritis, eadem hora mittemini in fornacem ignis ardentis : et quis est Deus, qui eripiet vos de manu mea ?
16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego replied to King Nebuchadnezzar, 'Your question needs noanswer from us:16 Respondentes Sidrach, Misach, et Abdenago, dixerunt regi Nabuchodonosor : Non oportet nos de hac re respondere tibi.
17 if our God, the one we serve, is able to save us from the burning fiery furnace and from your power,Your Majesty, he wil save us;17 Ecce enim Deus noster, quem colimus, potest eripere nos de camino ignis ardentis, et de manibus tuis, o rex, liberare.
18 and even if he does not, then you must know, Your Majesty, that we wil not serve your god or worshipthe statue you have set up.'18 Quod si noluerit, notum sit tibi, rex, quia deos tuos non colimus, et statuam auream, quam erexisti, non adoramus.
19 This infuriated King Nebuchadnezzar; his expression was changed now as he looked at Shadrach,Meshach and Abed-Nego. He gave orders for the furnace to be made seven times hotter than usual19 Tunc Nabuchodonosor repletus est furore, et aspectus faciei illius immutatus est super Sidrach, Misach, et Abdenago : et præcepit ut succenderetur fornax septuplum quam succendi consueverat.
20 and commanded certain stalwarts from his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego andthrow them into the burning fiery furnace.20 Et viris fortissimis de exercitu suo jussit ut ligatis pedibus Sidrach, Misach, et Abdenago, mitterent eos in fornacem ignis ardentis.
21 They were then bound in their cloaks, trousers, headgear and other garments, and thrown into theburning fiery furnace.21 Et confestim viri illi vincti, cum braccis suis, et tiaris, et calceamentis, et vestibus, missi sunt in medium fornacis ignis ardentis :
22 The king's command was so urgent and the heat of the furnace was so fierce, that the men carryingShadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego were burnt to death by the flames from the fire;22 nam jussio regis urgebat. Fornax autem succensa erat nimis : porro viros illos, qui miserant Sidrach, Misach, et Abdenago, interfecit flamma ignis.
23 the three men, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego fel , bound, into the burning fiery furnace.23 Viri autem hi tres, id est, Sidrach, Misach, et Abdenago, ceciderunt in medio camino ignis ardentis, colligati.
24 And they walked in the heart of the flames, praising God and blessing the Lord.24 Et ambulabant in medio flammæ, laudantes Deum, et benedicentes Domino.
25 Azariah stood in the heart of the fire, praying aloud thus:25 Stans autem Azarias oravit sic, aperiensque os suum in medio ignis, ait :
26 May you be blessed and revered, Lord, God of our ancestors, may your name be held glorious forever.26 Benedictus es, Domine Deus patrum nostrorum,
et laudabile, et gloriosum nomen tuum in sæcula :
27 For you are upright in al that you have done for us, al your deeds are true, all your ways right, al yourjudgements true.27 quia justus es in omnibus, quæ fecisti nobis,
et universa opera tua vera, et viæ tuæ rectæ,
et omnia judicia tua vera.
28 True is the sentence you have given in al that you have brought down on us and on Jerusalem, theholy city of our ancestors, for you have treated us rightly and truly, as our sins deserve.28 Judicia enim vera fecisti
juxta omnia, quæ induxisti super nos,
et super civitatem sanctam patrum nostrorum Jerusalem :
quia in veritate et in judicio induxisti omnia hæc
propter peccata nostra.
29 Yes, we have sinned and committed a crime by deserting you, yes, we have greatly sinned; we havenot listened to your commandments,29 Peccavimus enim, et inique egimus recedentes a te,
et deliquimus in omnibus :
30 we have not observed them, we have not done what you commanded us to do for our own good.30 et præcepta tua non audivimus,
nec observavimus,
nec fecimus sicut præceperas nobis
ut bene nobis esset.
31 Yes, al that you have brought down on us, al that you have done to us, you have been ful y justifiedin doing.31 Omnia ergo, quæ induxisti super nos,
et universa quæ fecisti nobis,
in vero judicio fecisti ;
32 You have handed us over to our enemies, to a lawless people, the worst of the godless, to an unjustking, the worst in the whole world;32 et tradidisti nos in manibus inimicorum nostrorum iniquorum,
et pessimorum, prævaricatorumque,
et regi injusto, et pessimo ultra omnem terram.
33 today we have no right to open our mouths, shame and dishonour are the lot of those who serve andworship you.33 Et nunc non possumus aperire os :
confusio, et opprobrium facti sumus servis tuis,
et his qui colunt te.
34 Do not abandon us for ever, for the sake of your name; do not repudiate your covenant,34 Ne, quæsumus, tradas nos in perpetuum propter nomen tuum,
et ne dissipes testamentum tuum :
35 do not withdraw your favour from us, for the sake of Abraham, your friend, of Isaac, your servant, andof Israel, your holy one,35 neque auferas misericordiam tuam a nobis,
propter Abraham, dilectum tuum,
et Isaac, servum tuum,
et Israël, sanctum tuum,
36 to whom you promised to make their descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as the grainsof sand on the seashore.36 quibus locutus es pollicens quod multiplicares semen eorum
sicut stellas cæli,
et sicut arenam quæ est in littore maris ;
37 Lord, we have become the least of al nations, we are put to shame today throughout the world, because of our sins.37 quia, Domine, imminuti sumus plus quam omnes gentes,
sumusque humiles in universa terra hodie
propter peccata nostra.
38 We now have no leader, no prophet, no prince, no burnt offering, no sacrifice, no oblation, no incense,no place where we can make offerings to you38 Et non est in tempore hoc princeps, et dux, et propheta,
neque holocaustum, neque sacrificium,
neque oblatio, neque incensum,
neque locus primitiarum coram te,
39 and win your favour. But may the contrite soul, the humbled spirit, be as acceptable to you39 ut possimus invenire misericordiam tuam,
sed in animo contrito, et spiritu humilitatis suscipiamur.
40 as burnt offerings of rams and bullocks, as thousands of fat lambs: such let our sacrifice be to youtoday, and may it please you that we fol ow you whole-heartedly, since those who trust in you wil not beshamed.40 Sicut in holocausto arietum, et taurorum,
et sicut in millibus agnorum pinguium,
sic fiat sacrificium nostrum in conspectu tuo hodie, ut placeat tibi,
quoniam non est confusio confidentibus in te.
41 And now we put our whole heart into fol owing you, into fearing you and seeking your face once more.41 Et nunc sequimur te in toto corde ;
et timemus te, et quærimus faciem tuam.
42 Do not abandon us to shame but treat us in accordance with your gentleness, in accordance with thegreatness of your mercy.42 Nec confundas nos,
sed fac nobiscum juxta mansuetudinem tuam,
et secundum multitudinem misericordiæ tuæ.
43 Rescue us in accordance with your wonderful deeds and win fresh glory for your name, O Lord.43 Et erue nos in mirabilibus tuis,
et da gloriam nomini tuo, Domine ;
44 Confusion seize al who il -treat your servants: may they be covered with shame, deprived of al theirpower, and may their strength be broken.44 et confundantur omnes qui ostendunt servis tuis mala :
confundantur in omni potentia tua,
et robur eorum conteratur :
45 Let them learn that you alone are God and Lord, glorious over the whole world.45 et sciant quia tu es Dominus Deus solus,
et gloriosus super orbem terrarum.
46 Al this time, the king's servants, who had thrown them into the furnace, had been stoking it with crudeoil, pitch, tow and brushwood46 Et non cessabant qui miserant eos ministri regis succendere fornacem, naphtha, et stuppa, et pice, et malleolis,
47 until the flames rose forty-nine cubits above the furnace47 et effundebatur flamma super fornacem cubitis quadraginta novem :
48 and, leaping out, burnt those Chaldaeans to death who were standing round it.48 et erupit, et incendit quos reperit juxta fornacem de Chaldæis.
49 But the angel of the Lord came down into the furnace beside Azariah and his companions; he drovethe flames of the fire outwards from the furnace49 Angelus autem Domini descendit cum Azaria, et sociis ejus in fornacem : et excussit flammam ignis de fornace,
50 and, in the heart of the furnace, wafted a coolness to them as of the breeze and dew, so that the firedid not touch them at al and caused them no pain or distress.50 et fecit medium fornacis quasi ventum roris flantem, et non tetigit eos omnino ignis, neque contristavit, nec quidquam molestiæ intulit.
51 Then al three in unison began to sing, glorifying and blessing God in the furnace, with the words:51 Tunc hi tres quasi ex uno ore laudabant, et glorificabant, et benedicebant Deum in fornace, dicentes :
52 May you be blessed, Lord, God of our ancestors, be praised and extol ed for ever. Blessed be yourglorious and holy name, praised and extol ed for ever.52 Benedictus es, Domine Deus patrum nostrorum :
et laudabilis, et gloriosus, et superexaltatus in sæcula.
Et benedictum nomen gloriæ tuæ sanctum :
et laudabile, et superexaltatum in omnibus sæculis.

91 King Nebuchadnezzar sprang to his feet in amazement. He said to his advisers, 'Did we not havethese three men thrown bound into the fire?' They answered the king, 'Certainly, Your Majesty'.91 Tunc Nabuchodonosor rex obstupuit, et surrexit propere, et ait optimatibus suis : Nonne tres viros misimus in medium ignis compeditos ? Qui respondentes regi, dixerunt : Vere, rex.
92 'But', he went on, 'I can see four men walking free in the heart of the fire and quite unharmed! And thefourth looks like a child of the gods!'92 Respondit, et ait : Ecce ego video quatuor viros solutos, et ambulantes in medio ignis, et nihil corruptionis in eis est, et species quarti similis filio Dei.
93 Nebuchadnezzar approached the mouth of the burning fiery furnace and said, 'Shadrach, Meshachand Abed-Nego, servants of God Most High, come out, come here!' And from the heart of the fire out cameShadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego.93 Tunc accessit Nabuchodonosor ad ostium fornacis ignis ardentis, et ait : Sidrach, Misach, et Abdenago, servi Dei excelsi, egredimini, et venite. Statimque egressi sunt Sidrach, Misach, et Abdenago de medio ignis.
94 The satraps, magistrates, governors, and advisers of the king crowded round the three men toexamine them: the fire had had no effect on their bodies: not a hair of their heads had been singed, their cloakswere not scorched, no smell of burning hung about them.
95 'Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego: he has sent his angel to rescue hisservants who, putting their trust in him, defied the order of the king, and preferred to forfeit their bodies ratherthan serve or worship any god but their God.95 Et erumpens Nabuchodonosor, ait : Benedictus Deus eorum, Sidrach videlicet, Misach, et Abdenago : qui misit angelum suum, et eruit servos suos, qui crediderunt in eum : et verbum regis immutaverunt, et tradiderunt corpora sua ne servirent, et ne adorarent omnem deum, excepto Deo suo.
96 I therefore decree as fol ows, "Peoples, nations, and languages! Let any of you speak disrespectful yof the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego, and I shal have him torn limb from limb and his house turnedinto a dunghil ; for there is no other god who can save like this." '96 A me ergo positum est hoc decretum : ut omnis populus, tribus, et lingua, quæcumque locuta fuerit blasphemiam contra Deum Sidrach, Misach, et Abdenago, dispereat, et domus ejus vastetur : neque enim est alius deus, qui possit ita salvare.
97 The king then showered favours on Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego in the province of Babylon.97 Tunc rex promovit Sidrach, Misach, et Abdenago in provincia Babylonis.
98 'King Nebuchadnezzar, to all peoples, nations and languages dwelling throughout the world: may youprosper more and more!98 Nabuchodonosor rex, omnibus populis, gentibus, et linguis, qui habitant in universa terra, pax vobis multiplicetur.
99 'It is my pleasure to make known the signs and wonders with which the Most High God has favouredme.99 Signa, et mirabilia fecit apud me Deus excelsus. Placuit ergo mihi prædicare
100 How great his signs, how mighty his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, his empireendures age after age!'100 signa ejus, quia magna sunt : et mirabilia ejus, quia fortia : et regnum ejus regnum sempiternum, et potestas ejus in generationem et generationem.
