1 And so the Lord has carried out the sentence which he passed on us, on our judges who governedIsrael, on our kings and leaders and on the people of Israel and of Judah;	1 Io starò sul mio posto di guar dia, e fermerò il piede sopra la fortezza, e starò attento, per ve­dere ciò che mi sarà detto, e che abbia a rispondere a chi mi ri­prende.
2 what he did to Jerusalem has never been paral eled under the wide heavens -- in conformity with whatwas written in the Law of Moses;	2 E il Signore mi rispose e disse: Scrivi la visione, stendila sopra tavole, in modo che la pos­sa scorrere chi la legge;
3 we were each reduced to eating the flesh of our own sons and daughters.	3 perché la visione è di cosa ancora lonta­na, ma apparirà a suo tempo e non sarà smentita: se tarda, aspettalo, perchè chi deve venire verrà, senza tardare.
4 Furthermore, he has handed them over into the power of all the kingdoms that surround us, to be thecontempt and execration of all the neighbouring peoples among whom the Lord scattered them.	4 Ecco, chi è incredulo non ha in sè un'anima giusta, ma il giusto vivrà per la sua fede.
5 Instead of being masters, they found themselves enslaved, because we had sinned against the Lord ourGod by not listening to his voice.	5 Or come il vino ingan­na chi lo beve, così sarà dell'uo­mo superbo: sarà senza onore, perchè ha allargata la sua cupi­digia come l'inferno, ed egli è insaziabile come la morte: vorreb­be riunire sotto di sè tutte le nazioni, e ammassare sotto di sè tutti i popoli.
6 Saving justice is the Lord's; we and our ancestors have only the look of shame we bear today.	6 Or dunque tutti questi non pronunzieranno sopra di lui la loro parabola, i loro pro­verbi a suo riguardo? Non si dirà: « Guai a colui che accumula roba non sua, — fino a quando? — e si mette addosso denso fango? »
7 Al those disasters which the Lord pronounced against us have now befallen us.	7 Non si alzeranno all'im provviso quelli che ti dovranno mordere, e non saranno svegliati quelli che ti dovranno sbranare, e non diverrai tu loro preda?
8 And yet we have not tried to win the favour of the Lord by each of us renouncing the dictates of our ownwicked heart;	8 Perchè tu hai spogliate molte nazioni tutti quelli che resteranno dello nazioni spoglieranno te, a causa del sangue degli uomi­ni, e delle iniquità fatte contro la terra, contro la città, contro tut­ti i suoi abitanti.
9 so the Lord has been alert to our misdeeds and has brought disaster down on us, since the Lord isupright in everything he had commanded us to do,	9 Guai a chi raduna per la sua casa (i frutti) della perversa ava­rizia, per mettere in alto il suo nido, credendo di salvarsi dagli artigli del male.
10 and we have not listened to his voice so as to fol ow the commandments which the Lord had ordainedfor us.	10 Tu hai studiato il modo di disonorar la tua casa, tu hai straziati molti popoli, e l'anima tua ha peccato.
11 And now, Lord, God of Israel, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand, with signs andwonders, with great power and with outstretched arm, to win yourself a name such as you have today,	11 Infatti i sassi alzeran la voce dalla mu­raglia e i legni delle giunture dell'edifìcio risponderanno.
12 we have sinned, we have committed sacrilege; Lord our God, we have broken al your precepts.	12 Guai a colui che edifica una città col sangue, e allestisce castelli sul­ l'ingiustizia.
13 Let your anger turn from us since we are no more than a little remnant among the nations where youhave dispersed us.	13 E queste cose non sono dal Signore degli eserciti? I popoli lavoreranno per un gran fuoco, e le nazioni per niente, e periranno.
14 Listen, Lord, to our prayers and our entreaties; deliver us for your own sake and let us win the favour ofthe people who have deported us,	14 Perchè la terra sarà ripiena della conoscenza della gloria del Signore come le acque ricoprono il mare.
15 so that the whole world may know that you are the Lord our God, since Israel and his descendantsbear your name.	15 Guai a chi dà a bere al suo amico e ci mette il suo fiele per ubriacarlo, per mi­rarne la nudità.
16 Look down, Lord, from your holy dwel ing-place and think of us, bow your ear and listen,	16 Invece di gloria tu sei ricolmo d'ignominia; bevi anche tu e addormentati: ti starà intorno il calice della destra del Signore, e un vomito ignominio­so sopra la tua gloria,
17 open your eyes, Lord, and look; the dead down in Sheol, whose breath has been taken from theirbodies, are not the ones to give glory and due recognition to the Lord;	17 perché le iniquità fatte sul Libano ti ricopriranno, e la strage degli animali ti spaventerà, a causa del sangue degli uomini, delle ini­quità fatte contro la terra, con­tro la città e contro tutti i suoi abitanti.
18 whoever is overcome with affliction, who goes along bowed down and frail, with failing eyes andhungering soul, that is the one to give you glory and due recognition, Lord.	18 A che giova la statua? Perchè il suo artefice l'ha scolpita, ne ha fatto un idolo di getto, imagine bugiarda? Perchè l'ar­tefice pone la sua speranza in ciò che ha fatto, si è formati dei si­mulacri muti.
19 We do not rely on the merits of our ancestors and of our kings to offer you our humble plea, Lord ourGod.	19 Guai a chi dice al legno: « Svegliati », e alla muta pietra: « Alzati ». Potrà essa insegnare? Ecco che è ricoperta d'o­ro e d'argento, ma nelle sue vi­scere non c'è alcun soffio di vita.
20 No, you have sent down your anger and your fury on us, as you threatened through your servants theprophets when they said,	20 Ma il Signore è nel suo tempio santo: taccia dinanzi a lui tutta la terra.
21 'The Lord says this: Bend your necks and serve the king of Babylon, and you wil remain in the countrywhich I gave to your ancestors.	21 « Cosi parla il Signore: piegate le vostre spalle e il vostro collo e servite al re di Babilonia, e dimorerete nella terra da me data ai vostri padri.
22 But if you do not listen to the voice of the Lord and serve the king of Babylon	22 Se poi voi non darete ascolto alla voce del Signore Dio vostro, di servire al re di Babilonia, vi farò cacciare dalle città di Giuda e dalle piazze di Gerusalemme.
23 then I shal silence the shouts of rejoicing and mirth and the voices of bridegroom and bride in thetowns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, and the whole country will be reduced to desert, with noinhabitants.'	23 E farò cessare di mezzo a voi il canto della gioia, il canto dell'allegrezza, il canto dello sposo, il canto della sposa, e tutta la terra sarà senza traccia di abitatori ».
24 But we would not listen to your voice and serve the king of Babylon, and so you carried out what youhad threatened through your servants the prophets: that the bones of our kings and of our ancestors would bedragged from their resting places.	24 Ma essi non hanno dato ascolto alla tua voce, di servire al re di Babilonia, e tu hai compite le tue parole, dette per mezzo dei tuoi servi, i profeti, che le ossa dei nostri re e le ossa dei nostri padri sarebbero tolte dai loro sepolcri.
25 They were indeed tossed out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night. And people died indreadful agony, from famine, sword and plague.	25 Ed ecco sono state gettate al calore del sole, al gelo della notte, e son morti fra atroci dolori, di fame, di spada, di peste.
26 And so, because of the wickedness of the House of Israel and the House of Judah, you have madethis House, that bears your name, what it is today.	26 E il tempio, nel quale era invocato il tuo nome, l'hai ridotto nello stato in cui oggi si trova a causa dell'iniquità della casa d'Israele e della casa di Giuda.
27 And yet, Lord our God, you have treated us in a way worthy of al your goodness and boundlesstenderness,	27 Tu hai agito con noi, o Signore Dio nostro, secondo tutta la tua bontà, e secondo tutta la tua famosa e grande misericordia,
28 just as you had promised through your servant Moses, the day you told him to write your Law in thepresence of the Israelites, and said,	28 come avevi detto per mezzo del tuo servo Mosè nel giorno in cui gli ordinasti di scrivere la tua legge davanti ai figli d'Israele,
29 'If you do not listen to my voice, this great and innumerable multitude wil certainly be reduced to a tinyfew among the nations where I shal scatter them-	29 dicendo: « Se voi non darete ascolto alla mia voce questa gran moltitudine si ridurrà ad essere la minima fra le nazioni, tra le quali io la sperderò.
30 for I knew that, being an obstinate people, they would not listen to me. But in the country of their exile,they will come to themselves	30 Ma io so bene che questo popolo non mi darà ascolto, perchè è un popolo di dura cervice: ebbene, rientrerà in se stesso nella terra del suo esilio.
31 and acknowledge that I am the Lord their God. I shal give them a heart and an attentive ear,	31 E allora riconosceranno che io sono il Signore loro Dio, e io darò loro un cuore, e capiranno, delle orecchie, e intenderanno; e mi daranno lode nella terra del loro esilio, e si ricorderanno del mio nome,
32 and they will sing my praises in the country of their exile, they will remember my name;	32 e perderanno la durezza del loro dorso e la loro malignità, ricordandosi di quel che avvenne ai loro padri, che peccarono contro di me.
33 they wil stop being obstinate and, remembering what became of their ancestors who sinned before theLord, will turn from their evil deeds.	33 Ed io li ricondurrò nella terra da me promessa con giuramento ai loro padri, a Abramo, a Isacco, a Giacobbe, ed essi ne avranno il dominio, ed io li moltiplicherò e non diminuiranno.
34 Then I shal bring them back to the country which I promised on oath to their ancestors Abraham, Isaacand Jacob, and make them masters in it. I shal make their numbers grow; they wil not dwindle again.	34 E farò con essi un'altra alleanza, eterna, in modo ch'io sia il loro Dio ed essi siano il mio popolo, ed io non caccerò più il mio popolo, i figli d'Israele, dalla terra ch'io diedi ad essi ».
35 And I shal make an everlasting covenant with them; so that I am their God and they are my people.And never again shal I drive my people Israel out of the country which I have given them.'
