NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
1 The words of Yahweh that were addressed to the prophet Jeremiah against the nations.1 Quod factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam prophetam contra gentes.
2 On Egypt. Against the army of Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt, which was at Carchemish on the RiverEuphrates when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated it in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, kingof Judah.2 Ad Ægyptum, adversum exercitum Pharaonis Nechao regis Ægypti, qui erat juxta fluvium Euphraten in Charcamis, quem percussit Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis, in quarto anno Joakim filii Josiæ regis Juda.
3 Buckler and shield at the ready! Onward to battle!3 Præparate scutum et clypeum,
et procedite ad bellum.
4 Harness the horses: into the saddle, horsemen! To your ranks! On with your helmets! Sharpen yourspears, put on your breastplates!4 Jungite equos, et ascendite, equites :
state in galeis, polite lanceas, induite vos loricis.
5 Why do I see them retreating, panic-stricken? Their heroes, beaten back, are fleeing headlong, with nota look behind. Terror on every side, Yahweh declares!5 Quid igitur ? vidi ipsos pavidos,
et terga vertentes,
fortes eorum cæsos :
fugerunt conciti, nec respexerunt :
terror undique, ait Dominus.
6 No flight for the swift, no escape for the strong! Up in the north on the River Euphrates, they havecol apsed, have fal en.6 Non fugiat velox,
nec salvari se putet fortis :
ad aquilonem juxta flumen Euphraten
victi sunt, et ruerunt.
7 Who was it rose like the Nile, his waters foaming like a torrent?7 Quis est iste, qui quasi flumen ascendit,
et veluti fluviorum intumescunt gurgites ejus ?
8 Why, Egypt rose like the Nile, his waters foaming like a torrent. 'I shal rise', he said, 'and drown theearth; sweep away town and its inhabitants!8 Ægyptus fluminis instar ascendit,
et velut flumina movebuntur fluctus ejus,
et dicet : Ascendens operiam terram :
perdam civitatem, et habitatores ejus.
9 Charge, horses! Forward, chariots! Let the warriors advance, men from Cush and Put with shield inhand, men from Lud who bend the bow!'9 Ascendite equos,
et exsultate in curribus,
et procedant fortes,
Æthiopia et Libyes tenentes scutum,
et Lydii arripientes et jacientes sagittas.
10 For this is the Day of Lord Yahweh Sabaoth, a day of vengeance when he takes revenge on his foes:the sword wil devour until gorged, until drunk with their blood, for Lord Yahweh Sabaoth is holding a sacrificialfeast in the land of the north, on the River Euphrates.10 Dies autem ille Domini Dei exercituum dies ultionis,
ut sumat vindictam de inimicis suis :
devorabit gladius, et saturabitur,
et inebriabitur sanguine eorum :
victima enim Domini Dei exercituum
in terra aquilonis juxta flumen Euphraten.
11 Go up to Gilead and fetch balm, virgin daughter of Egypt! You multiply remedies in vain, nothing cancure you!11 Ascende in Galaad, et tolle resinam,
virgo filia Ægypti :
frustra multiplicas medicamina :
sanitas non erit tibi.
12 The nations have heard of your shame, your wailing fil s the world, for warrior has stumbled againstwarrior, and both have fal en together.12 Audierunt gentes ignominiam tuam,
et ululatus tuus replevit terram :
quia fortis impegit in fortem,
et ambo pariter conciderunt.
13 The word that came from Yahweh to the prophet Jeremiah when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylonadvanced to attack Egypt.13 Verbum quod locutus est Dominus ad Jeremiam prophetam, super eo quod venturus esset Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis, et percussurus terram Ægypti :
14 Publish it in Egypt, proclaim it in Migdol, proclaim it in Noph and Tahpanhes! Say, 'Stand your ground,be prepared, for the sword is devouring al round you!'14 Annuntiate Ægypto, et auditum facite in Magdalo,
et resonet in Memphis, et in Taphnis :
dicite : Sta, et præpara te,
quia devorabit gladius ea quæ per circuitum tuum sunt.
15 Why has Apis fled? Why has your Mighty One not stood firm? Why, Yahweh has overturned him,15 Quare computruit fortis tuus ?
non stetit, quoniam Dominus subvertit eum.
16 he has caused many to fal ! Fal ing over one another, they say, 'Up, and back to our own people, tothe country where we were born, away from the devastating sword!'16 Multiplicavit ruentes,
ceciditque vir ad proximum suum, et dicent :
Surge, et revertamur ad populum nostrum,
et ad terram nativitatis nostræ,
a facie gladii columbæ.
17 They have given Pharaoh king of Egypt the nickname, 'Much-noise-but-he-lets-the-chance-slip-by'!17 Vocate nomen Pharaonis regis Ægypti :
tumultum adduxit tempus.
18 As I live, the King declares, whose name is Yahweh Sabaoth, he is coming, a very Tabor amongmountains, a Carmel high above the sea!18 Vivo ego, inquit Rex (Dominus exercituum nomen ejus),
quoniam sicut Thabor in montibus,
et sicut Carmelus in mari, veniet.
19 Get your bundle ready for exile, fair inhabitant of Egypt! Noph will be reduced to a desert, desolate,uninhabited.19 Vasa transmigrationis fac tibi,
habitatrix filia Ægypti :
quia Memphis in solitudinem erit,
et deseretur, et inhabitabilis erit.
20 Egypt was a splendid heifer, but a gadfly from the north has settled on her.20 Vitula elegans atque formosa Ægyptus,
stimulator ab aquilone veniet ei.
21 The mercenaries she had with her, these too were like fattened calves: but they too have taken totheir heels, have al run away, not held their ground, for their day of disaster has overtaken them, their time forbeing punished.21 Mercenarii quoque ejus,
qui versabantur in medio ejus quasi vituli saginati,
versi sunt, et fugerunt simul,
nec stare potuerunt :
quia dies interfectionis eorum venit super eos,
tempus visitationis eorum.
22 Hear her hissing like a snake as they advance in force to fal on her with their axes, like woodcutters,22 Vox ejus quasi æris sonabit :
quoniam cum exercitu properabunt,
et cum securibus venient ei
quasi cædentes ligna.
23 they wil fell her forest, Yahweh declares, however impenetrable it was for they are more numerousthan locusts, there is no counting them.23 Succiderunt saltum ejus, ait Dominus,
qui supputari non potest :
multiplicati sunt super locustas,
et non est eis numerus.
24 The daughter of Egypt is put to shame, handed over to a people from the north.24 Confusa est filia Ægypti,
et tradita in manu populi aquilonis.
25 Yahweh Sabaoth, God of Israel, has said, 'Look, I shal punish Amon of No, Pharaoh, Egypt, its gods, its kings, Pharaoh and those who put their trust in him.25 Dixit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israël :
Ecce ego visitabo super tumultum Alexandriæ,
et super Pharaonem, et super Ægyptum,
et super deos ejus, et super reges ejus,
et super Pharaonem, et super eos qui confidunt in eo :
26 I shal hand him over to those who are determined to kil him, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, tohis generals. But afterwards, Egypt wil be inhabited again as in the past, Yahweh declares.26 et dabo eos in manu quærentium animam eorum,
et in manu Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis,
et in manu servorum ejus :
et post hæc habitabitur sicut diebus pristinis, ait Dominus.
27 But do not be afraid, my servant Jacob, Israel, do not be alarmed: for look, I shal rescue you fromafar and your descendants from the country where they are captive. Jacob wil return and be at peace, secure, with no one to trouble him.27 Et tu ne timeas, serve meus Jacob,
et ne paveas, Israël :
quia ecce ego salvum te faciam de longinquo,
et semen tuum de terra captivitatis tuæ :
et revertetur Jacob, et requiescet,
et prosperabitur, et non erit qui exterreat eum.
28 Do not be afraid, my servant Jacob, Yahweh declares, for I am with you: I shal make an end of al thenations where I have driven you, but I shal not make an end of you, I shal discipline you only as you deserve, not leaving you quite unpunished.28 Et tu noli timere, serve meus Jacob, ait Dominus,
quia tecum ego sum :
quia ego consumam cunctas gentes ad quas ejeci te,
te vero non consumam :
sed castigabo te in judicio,
nec quasi innocenti parcam tibi.
